Title: Favorite Bowl Memories
Post by: tmramrod91 on December 08, 2006, 10:31:23 AM
I know they have the top plays on kstatesports, but those of us who were fortunate enough to go to a few of em, what were your favorite plays, moments, etc...

'97 Cotton Bowl: After the hail mary td catch/lockett's amazing catch and run, the loudest any bowl game has been, then everyone throwing those stupid AT&T bears off the top deck
'97 Fiesta Bowl: The amazing mass of purple, and the throwback pass to Swift/Ochs pick to seal the deal
'93 Copper Bowl: the entire experience and game, probably the most fun of any bowl game yet
'02 Holiday Bowl: the ridiculous 4th down pass from Roberson that he just threw up there

Worst Memories:
'98 Alamo Bowl: enough said
'03 Fiesta: coming out of the pep rally, not seeing Ell anywhere, and hearing the news...unreal
'97 Cotton Bowl: Lockett being ruled out of bounds...what a load of crap

I've been to the 98 A-bowl and the 03 F-Bowl.

I'm going to the Texas bowl.

I went to the 98 Alamo, 01 Insight.com, 02 Holiday, and 03 Fiesta.

The '01 Insight Bowl was horrible.

I didn't go, but the Aloha Bowl was just incredibly painful to watch.

In order (bowl games I went to):

97 Fiesta
93 Copper
95 Holiday
03 Fiesta
98 Alamo
01 Insight

It is hard to top becoming a "national team" as we kicked McNabb all over the field.

The fun of "what is this bowl game stuff?" in 93 was a blast as well.

It looks like mine are going to be mostly the same.

Favorites:

Copper Bowl - That really was a fantastic experience.  No venue we have gone to since embraced the bowl game the way Tuscon did.  The atmosphere, the game, just a fantastic experience.

'97 Fiesta Bowl - Man Bishop was fun to watch.

Independence Bowl - It was cold as hell, and we didn't play real well, but since my little brother was too young to go, it became a father-son trip that pretty much locked in my K-State football fandom (this could have been a very bad thing, thank you Coach Snyder)

Just from the game standpoint itself, the Cotton Bowl vs. Tennessee should be on this list, it was certainly a better game for us than the Independence was, but the morning kick off and the cold, and the fact that I don't much care for Dallas knock it down a peg for me.

Worst:

'03 Fiesta Bowl - The whole Ell thing just sucked the fun out of the game.

Alamo - There was no fun to be sucked out of that one.  I mean, when you're at a bowl game pep rally and the speaker (Sen Robertson) is talking aobut "It's not so bad!", you know it's pretty bad.

Aloha - Only K-State bowl game I wasn't at.  Watched at my grandparents on Christmas Day, with my Grandpa not doing well.  It was kind of a depressing day really, and the game didn't help.

The Insight was a lousy game, but it wasn't nearly as bad an "experience" as the others.

The '01 insight bowl was so bad, I completely forgot about it. That was by far the worst game of football (bowl game wise) that I have ever witnessed.

I went to 3 bowl games...

98 Alamo Bowl - I tried not to remember that game...

99 Holiday Bowl - Martez Wesley caught a quick pass on the right side then did a juke move that made the Washington defender just fall down, he then ran for a 40-60 yard gain.  Just the way he took the defender right out of his shoes makes me laugh when I think about it.

00 Cotton Bowl - Beating the crap outta Tennessee, knowing full well if it would happened 2 years prior, well nevermind...  That, or the long TD pass that Morgan caught in full stride into the endzone.

Just a few quick ones...

Every post season game I've been to, we've lost.
Our first Conf. Chaampionshiop game against OU in KC. Damn it was cold that night.
Game against aTM in St. Louis. God, what a heartbreaker that was!
And the Cotton Bowl in '97. Car broke down on the way to the game! Had to work the next day.

Just so you know, I'm staying home this year, so don't worry about that.

I went to the Cotton Bowl vs. BYU. I remember waking up the morning of the game and it was so foggy that you couldn't see out of the hotel window. Don't really remember anything specifically about the game but I remember going to a restaurant after the game. We had to sit and wait for the table and there were a few BYU fans there. They were nice but I'm not fun to be around when we lose and I'm sure I'm not fun to be around when we lose and you're a fan of the opposing team. I didn't say anything really mean.....I was just really quiet. They kept telling my family how impressed they were by the fact that so many KSU fans travelled in groups. Like as families or something. Must not be that way everywhere.

Both Cottons, Fiesta I, Alamo, and soon Texas.

Partying at Hooters on Mill St before the Fiesta was great. The game was greater. The ice storm from texas all the way back home that tacked 6 or 7 hours onto our trip was the worst part of that one.

Never seen anything like the caravan down to the first Cotton before or since. Having the presence of mind to grab my camera and catch a shot of Lockett crossing the 10 yd line on his way to paydirt.

texans not having a clue how to drive on ice and having to get up really fricking early to go to a football game.  Our seats were right behind the band, but the band overflowed and we had tuba players sitting in our seats, so we didn't get seated (in the next section over) until after the game started.

Don't remember much from Alamo other than how cool the River Walk was and going to a grocery store the night before and asking where a liquor store was.  The guy (Hispanic) told us it was down the road a little ways and the road was one thing but it was actually called something else. This didn't make a whole lot of sense but figured we could find it.  He also said that "there aren't a lot of people...uh...like you around there." White people, right, you can say white people.  So the 6 of us crammed into the car and set out, windows covered with KSU slogans and generally looking very much unlike locals.  We get down to the area the guy said and we see one car moving in the whole area, about 6 blocks away.  There are bars covering a lot of windows and we see housing projects across a field. Its also well after dark.  Didn't take us long to whip a u-turn and get the hell outta there. We stuck with grocery store liquor and beer instead of hard stuff.

Copper, 2 Cottons, 2 Fiestas, Alamo

I remember the anticipation in 1993 after we qualified for a bowl.  What bowl are we going to?  I'm going!  We had 8 people in our group ready to go no matter where it was.  There was a little bar not far from the stadium called Dirt Bags.  We stayed there partyin with a group of KD alumna until everyone else was gone.  We walked into the game when the teams were lined up for the kickoff.

Each of the bowl trips has its own unique and fantastic memories.  The trip in and of itself is great, while the game is just icing.

Ok, classless bastages, the old man gets to chime in !

1982 Independence Bowl !

I got off work on a Friday night.  My wife, her brother and his friend piled into our 1980 Plymouth Horizon TC3.  We drove all night, saw the sun come up in TexArkana.  We ate then crashed until it was time to get up for the drive to Shreveport.  Ate supper there and went to the game.

Of course the place was crawling with Wildcat fans.   Jim Dickey was the coach and we played like we were just glad to be there !   Wisconsin won 14 - 3.   After the game (it was a night game), we went back to TexArkana and crashed again.

Got up Sunday morning and drove back to Manhattan.  What a road trip !  A highlight of the trip was teaching my Bro-in-law how to drive a stick shift.  I saw fraternity brothers who had made the trip over from Dallas.

Oh, did I mention it was our first bowl ever ?   :beerchug:

ive only been to the cotton bowl in 2000 and one of the images that will stick in my mind was the ice storm the night before.  dallas did not know how to deal with an ice storm. they were very slow to put salt on the roads or clear anything up.  i was driving back from a new years eve party with some family and almost got my car stuck going up a ramp on the highway.  as for the game we got there with no tickets and as luck would have it bought some for 20 dollars a piece outside the stadium an hour before kick off.  man what a fun time it was to see us stomp phil fulmer like we would have in 98...

I believe the ice storm was a couple of days before and they were still struggling.  I remember how cool the ice covered trees looked going through the Arbuckle's.

No surprise that you're trying to change the subject. It'll be interesting to see which happens first....K-Lite getting to a bowl that's broadcast on network television, or cable television finally making it's way to Manhattan so the fans there can watch their team in an irrelevant bowl that no one cares about.

K-Lite spouts more (http://f5.putfile.com/5/12322271245.jpg)

Do you even know when the last time nu was relevant to the National Championship picture ?

1.   2001 ?     You were there, but really shouldn't have been.  Miami kicks your butt 37 - 14  after the puffs beat you down 62 - 36.

2.  1999.       Ok, Fiesta Bowl, a BCS bowl, but if you claim this, KSU gets to claim 2003 Fiesta as well.  So no relevance here.  I agree that KSU hasn't had national relevance, except for maybe 1998.  But we lost to A&M, so no relevance.

3.  1997.     :crybaby:  Well you shared the MNC with Michigan it Dr. Tom's last season.  Scott Frost whines and the coaches feel nostalgic and Nebraska takes that poll, while Michigan takes the AP.  The Mizzou win also tainted this MNC.  I'll leave it to K-Lite to research why.   :violin:

4.  1995.  CONGRATULATIONS.  I give full props to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers on this one.  The closest anyone came to you was Wash St and 2 TD's.

So, in summary, we have to go back to 11 years ago to when Nebraska had any relevance in the National Championship scene.  Which is a long time to even spout any superiority.   :ustupid:

Oh and BTW, I may be classless, but draw the line on making fun of anyone's family.

2001. So about 5 years ago. We lost, but at least we were there. We won National Championships in 1994, 1995, and 1997. It's beena  roug couple of years as we rebuilt the whole system, especially the offense, but are almost back....next year we'll be in the National Championship picture.

Yeah, that's basically my point....never relevant.

Thanks. All biases as a fan aside, that was the best college football team that I've ever seen. Just dominant in every phase of the game.

More like 5 years or so. In any event, even though it's been a few years, it trumps never.

That's cool. Other than some occasional mom-smack, I try to as well. I'm here to talk football and give you guys a hard time. Those who rely on insulting someone's family are usually too stupid or inarticulate to craft a clever response. So I see it as more of a sign of their idiocy than anything.

We played in a National Championship game as recently as 2001. You played in one....wait for it....NEVER.

The only thing that's irrelevant is your team....that's why your game will be broadcast on the NFL network....any news if it will be live or on tape delay? After all, there's probably some Punt, Pass, or Kick competition that would draw better ratings.

All of the offensive skill position guys are back except Taylor. Keller will be an upgrade at QB. The O-Line will be vastly better.

We lose guys n the D-Line, but the young guys will actually offer better talent. Most of the LBs and DBs are back, and our all-world CB Bowman will be back and shutting down the opposing team's top receiver. NU will make a serious run next year.

The allmighty BIG 12 NORTH, strongest DIVISION of a conference in the nation
common guys lets bow down before nebraska's greatness

Punking you guys isn't as satisfying as beating a good team, but a Big 12 North title will do for this year. Next year, we'll make some serious noise. In the meantime, maybe you can reclaim your dignity and self-respect against the likes of Kansas and Baylor.

Funny that you trotted out the whole, "Blowing out my team is no big deal, because my team sucks" excuse. What kind of fan can't defend their team? Apparently the same ones that choose to wear homosexual purple.

Wow...that's almost as many in this conversation as your team scored against Nebraska in the entire game. Either I'm exceptionally witty or your team sucks....probably both.
