Title: Max Hawk-n-stein
Post by: cyclist on March 05, 2006, 08:53:55 PM
Ok, I'm posting this one here because Max Falkenstein is a ku icon and roundball is their premier sport.

While the subject title is my nickname for Max, his 60 years (60 !) of covering ku athletics is phenominal !  He has called every hayjawk game played in AFH, he knows all the ghosts, the players, the coaches, etc.

We had Dev Nelson, whom I got to meet in Junction City, KS, when he agreed to speak at our United Way meetings, back in the early 1980's.  He was a class act.

And so is Max.  You always knew his affiliation.  Even though it is ku, I respect that.

So Max, Good Night and Good Luck.

Max is overrated.  Great, he called games for ku for 60 years.  Big whoop.  You could put a monkey in the chair next to Bob Davis and he'd give you as much color commentary as Max did for 60 years, or at least for the 15 or so that I listened to him.

It's going to be interesting to listen to ku games next year when there's actual color commentary and not just:

"Wow!  What a great, athletic move by that young man...he's something special, Bob."

"Bill's not very happy about that one."

"What a great young man, Bob."

"Back in 1920, when I called the ku/Oklahoma A&M game, there was a young man playing for ku by the name of Dilbert McGillicuddy.  What a great young man he was..."

That being said, I'd give my left arm to do what Max did for the past 60 years.

Max is better than the jackass next to Wyatt.  Matt Walters is stealing money from Learfield Sports doing the color commentary.  If he says "right you are Wyatt Thompson" one more time, I think my ears will start to bleed.  Just horrible.  Too bad Greg Sharpe won't leave Topeka to be the voice of the Cats'.  I thought he was better than Mitch Holtus, or however you spell his last name.

Matt Walters is the worst ever (yes, worse htan Max).  Stan Weber isn't exactly great, either.

Stan absolutely grates on my nerves.

He just can't STFU ... just tell us what happened in about 10 words, and quit the crap where it sounds like he's going to pass out while he rambles.
