Freeman speaks:
No. 4 Texas at Kansas State
Josh Freeman's Confidence
Kansas State true freshman quarterback Josh Freeman was nearly perfect last week, competing 22 of 26 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns in a defeat of Colorado.
First-year coach Ron Prince received some criticism for turning to Freeman early in a season that appeared destined for a bowl appearance. Well, after some early struggles, Freeman, a top recruit who spurned Nebraska for Kansas State, has shown flashes of brilliance. And Kansas State is, amazingly, bowl eligible.
I had heard that Freeman, who is 6-foot- 6 and 240 pounds, was alternately humble and confident, as any 18-year-old may be. I was looking for brashness from Freeman in our chat this week, and I found some of it here:
Schad: Who's the most famous person in your cell phone?
Freeman: No one, really.
Schad: Well, what about Jevan Snead and Mitch Mustain?
Freeman: You heard about that, huh? Well, I guess Mustain is the most famous out of the three of us. You know, he got on the field first.
Schad: Why did three quarterbacks leave K-State?
Freeman: They felt they didn't have a chance to play.
Schad: What was it like early in camp, having five quarterbacks there?
Freeman: Kind of annoying, to be honest. Not a lot of reps.
Schad: When did you feel K-State became your team?
Freeman: Against Oklahoma State. It was when we came back to beat Oklahoma State. I knew I had their confidence. People said, "I believe in you." Nobody looked worried. And I got it done. We got it done.
Schad: I read Jason Whitlock wrote a column in the K.C. Star criticizing coach Prince's decision to start you as a true freshman. Aren't you from K.C.?
Freeman: I heard about it. He can have his own opinion. But we know what's going on. You know, I'd been in a few games. At first, it was hard to relax. Sometimes I'd drop back and see a stunt. I'd see a flash of color and take off. Not, I'm trying to be patient and hang in there.
Schad: Who's your favorite all-time quarterback?
Freeman: Warren Moon. I love his style of play.
Schad: Why would you say a player should go to Kansas State over Kansas?
Freeman: The atmosphere here. And the coaches. They'll play talent, not just who's been hyped.
Schad: You were hyped.
Freeman: That's true. But I also backed it up.
Schad: What do you like about coach Prince?
Freeman: Never a dull moment in practice. You know, he wants things his way. And it's going to be that way. He doesn't stray from our path and maybe some people don't like that. Maybe it rubs some people the wrong way.
Schad: What did he say to get you to Kansas State?
Freeman: I was sitting with him and my parents. And when he spoke, he spoke with such confidence about what he would do at Kansas State. He had a path and he wanted me to be the man to lead it. In my mind, this was a better option than Nebraska. And this has been fun. It's exhausting, but fun.
