Title: Question for people smarter than me (if there is such a thing)
Post by: rak21 on February 25, 2010, 11:30:29 AM
The "experts" have the Cats as a #2 seed right now. I was watching the Purdue game when their 2nd leading scorer (F Robbie Hummel) went out with what looked to be a serious knee injury. They're a #1 seed right now according to the same "experts". If they continue to win they're probably going to stay where they are but what would it take for the Cats to overtake them as a #1 seed if they do trip up? My immediate thought was when Cincinnati was going to be a #1 seed in 2000 until Kenyon Martin broke his leg in the conference tournament. They fell to a #3 seed if I remember correctly.

Yes, the committee's track record has shown they will watch how the team does without a star player and adjust the seed accordingly.  Purdue doesn't have a ton of games left though, so it will be tough for them to make a clear decision.  I'd say its likely they will drop at least one seed though if Hammel is out for the season.

I think Duke will pass us over for the number #1 seed because they will be a conference champion.  Only way I see the Cats making the move....Winning out on the regular conference season and beating uk again in the tournament.

Shouldn't that be smarter than I and then parenthetically referencing people as a thing in singular....whew....not a very high bar. :D ;)

This. Duke will likely get the 1 seed because they will win the ACC, and because they're Duke. We can get a 1 seed if we win the Big 12 tournament. We might get a 1 seed if we beat ku in Lawrence and then make it to the Big 12 championship game and lose a close one to ku.

No way B12 gets two #1 seeds....unless the 2 teams at the top are named Texas and ku.

Big East
Kentucky
ku
pick 'em from B10, ACC or second Big East

ku at 16-0, 15-1 or 14-2 B12 champs gets them the #1.

Good column from Andy Katz on just this issue. He basically says what I thought. Purdue's fate will be decided by what they do now without Hummel. He even cites Cincinnati just like I did. He basically says that the committee has time to decide what Purdue is because of the amount of season left while the fact the K-Mart got hurt during the conference tournament effected the way that Cincinnati could be percieved.

Villanova beats the Cuse tonight they put themselves in a good position to steal that 1 seed from Purdue.

I'll go with Kentucky, SqwaKSU, Villanova, and Syracuse...pending us beating ku twice in the next 2 weeks...

I've got another one for you. Lets say that the Cats beat Iowa State and go to the finals of the Big XII tournament and lose to uk, the most likely scenario to me, what do you think happens to us?

heard ESPN pose this question days ago.

our fate depends on how well or poor the other teams in top ten do.

Amongst all the drivel and idiocy that Reid Gettys and Dave Armstrong were spitting on Wednesday night I did hear them say 1 thing that I agreed with - if KSU isn't seeded as high as they should be, then Fran can use that as motivation. So, I dare the committee to make us a 4...

At this point I still think we are a 2 seed....

Who's Fran, and why does anybody need motivation in the one-and-done terminant (pun intended)?  Absolutely no logic in that one.

Why would Fran care?

The only thing I have noticed is that being a media darling is going to help us in the long run, The ku loss was more acceptable then the Duke loss to Maryland so as of right now we are considered a one seed. This is due to the respect we are getting from the media and what not. I have a really good feeling about the rest of this basketball season though! I think that ku whooping was a big wake up call to these Cats and don't see Frank allowing a let down against the Cyclones.

He can use the same strategy if we are a one seed as well.  All he has to do is print out the 5000 posts on ESPN's various boards proclaiming us to be the worst #1 seed in NCAA history.

You're probably right about this, next time I'll quit endlessly searching for Reid Gettys to say anything that makes much sense...
