Title: actually pretty excited about our incoming QBs...
Post by: Waggs on February 07, 2010, 11:12:12 AM
Of course Cameron Newton is in a separate class, but I think there are some solid options in this QB class.

Sammuel Lamur--He won the Red Raider scout team player award and was wearing the headset last year, so Snyder must feel pretty good about him.  I think he's the front runner.

Chris Harper--I don't think he'll be at QB, except for maybe in some Wildcat formations.  However, if he is given a shot at QB, his running abilities could be very, very tough to defend.

Ty Zimmerman--The film on him is impressive.  He has a decent arm and appears to be fast enough to be a dual-threat QB.  I wouldn't rule him out of the QB competition for the future, but he'll probably redshirt this season.

Billy Cosh--I think he'll redshirt, but also believe he has enough talent to compete for the starting QB job right away.  His arm strength looks very solid.  I hope he can run it, but am not so sure.

I've heard from sources that harper will be in the slot and will work in some wildcat formations.

FWIW that's what I have been hearing too.

Been hearing they are actually really big on Cosh though Lamur will probably be the starter early...Harper will be used in the wildcat (more like an option attack than a true wildcat if you ask me) but mainly WR...Klein will play WR full time... Zimmerman can run. My guess is they try to develop him into another WR. The thought of having 4 guys on the field at the same time that can throw a football is awesome. I could imagine a double reverse pass play or some other funky stuff.

I dunno. Seems like a lot of wrinkles but can the players pick all this stuff up? If so, sounds real good.

Also been hearing a lot of talk about a spread offense being used (especially with Cosh). :blahblah: Not sure if that means this coming year or the future. I think technically the A-11 is a spread. Could this be the future? :peek:

Ohh, the possibilities. Snyder's playbook is going to need a second volume.

Things I know For a FACT.
1. Chris Harper will be playing Slot/WR.
2) Ty Zimmerman will be playin WR/QB depending on how he develops with each
3) there are no frontrunners. Billy Cosh, Sam Lamur, Ty Zimmerman, Carson Coffman are "all in the mix". But IMO i think Sam Lamur is the frontrunner.

Yep. Don't quite get the Harper/wildcat thing. DT will be the man running the wildcat and should be.
One things for sure - there are going to be a whole lot of stud athletes on the field at one time. I have yet to hear one solid thing about Lamark. Not surprised if they finally try to make a LB out of him. Seems a little late for that though. Any word on him?

That would be stupid to switch lamark to a linebacker,he's the most experienced receiver. And Chris Harper would be better runnign the wildcat.. he's more shifty, and is just as fast if not faster than DT. Lamur at QB ( who can run), Daniel at rb. Harper,Brod Smith and Lamark at WR. lots of playmakers

We'll need Lamark's size and speed down the sideline on PA plays, and straight bombs.  Let Harper handle the slot and Smith the other wide-out position.  Hopefully Smith can block, b/c Lamark only does that about 1/2 the time.

If Harper truly is going to be used in the "wildcat" formation, I see it being more of an Arkansas (vintage Felix Jones and D. McFadden) single-wing type thing, rather than that draw read crap we ran with D.Train last year where there was almost no chance he was handing off.  (I realize we occasionally involved Banks, but I think those were designed end arounds regardless of who took the snap)

Would be cool to have Harp/Slamur take the snap with three options:  a) hand off to the back D.Train, b) hand-off to the guy running the end around (Harp, B. Smith, Lamark, some fast f*cker like Tramaine Thompson), or c) running it himself.  I think this is the stuff Oregon ran last year (and maybe before) so maybe Harp knows something about it already.

I guaran-God-damn-tee you don't know any of those things for a fact.  Snyder himself doesn't know anything about next year's team (this early) for a fact.

Wouldn't exactly bank on what the players say.  I was buddies with numerous players (Mostly starters and all guys that played quality snaps.)  while in school and they usually didn't even know the exact starting line-up until game time.  The offensive dudes know next to nothing about the defense and vice-versa. They're practically kept as much in the dark as the average fan.  You really think Snyder is talking to the players about which kids (Many that have never ever seen a practice field for us, like Zimmerman and Cosh) are going to be playing what positions 6 months from now?  Tons of things change during the spring and summer practices.  Hell, things change during the season- look at Prizell and Kass playing DE for us last year.  And simply naming every scholarship qb we have as "in the mix" is not exactly inside info.  Neither is the fact that Harper will be at WR.

I'll be fine if its not Coffman.

The more variety we can pull from the Wildcat, the more other teams will have to prepare for it.  That means less time they will be able to use to prepare for our base offense.
