Title: Mack Brown and UT players' quotes on KSU
Post by: The Manhatter on November 09, 2006, 06:43:24 AM
Mack Brown

During opening statement
Kansas State is number one in the country in kickoff returns. It's kind of funny going to Kansas State :loly: for the first time since 1989 and seeing the Bill Snyder Family Stadium on the stadium, but a new coach on the sidelines. Bill has gotten legendary status, like coach Royal, they don't name stadiums after you when you're alive unless you did pretty well. It'll be fun to see him, but Ron Prince has done a great job. Following a legend is tough, we're still doing that here and we understand how tough that is :bs:. But also, transitions are tough, and he's gotten his team playing at a very high mark. They're 6-4 and they're already bowl eligible. He brought in a freshman quarterback much like Colt named Josh Freeman that last week. Against Colorado, he hit 15 of his first 16 passes and hit 22-of-26 , so we will see two really good quarterbacks that are young and going to be around this league for a long time on Saturday night.

Weather is not a concern for us; in trying to study it, I think we've won every cold weather game we've ever played in the North  [Division], so I don't think the weather has ever been an issue for us, and it can't be any colder than it was in Lincoln. It can be as cold maybe, but it can't be any colder. We're excited about the atmosphere; it'll be a fun time. Every game except the Sam Houston game has been on some type of network TV; that was pay-per-view. Our guys are very fortunate; they'll have the [Texas] A&M game on ABC, as well. It's a fun time, an exciting time. We've just got to make sure we go play well.

On if he has ever crossed paths with Ron Prince
Yes, I knew of Ron as a player at Appalachian State, but more so as a coordinator at Virginia. I really respect Al Groh and his coaching and knowledge of the game, and what he did at Wake Forest and then with the Jets. He is really, really high on Ron and a lot of our guys are friends with Ron. So when he got the job, I asked our guys and talked to Al and they all said, 'Boy this guy is a superstar for the future.' He looks like it . He's got a great smile, he's done a super job on that sideline with his team, just studying them and watching them, and he's got the guys playing hard. As tough as it is to go in there and follow Bill Snyder, very few people could have done that, I think, and have this team at 6-4. Especially with the quarterback issues they had early and pulling Josh Freeman out from nowhere. So give him a lot of credit, I think he'll have Kansas State back to where they were :hope:.

On if Prince has changed the system at Kansas State
It's very similar :bs: and to his credit, Bill's son is his football operations guy, and I think Bill has an office there and I think he's done a good job of keeping the legend involved.

On the progress this team has made from his first meeting with Kansas State as UT head coach
We got here, and we beat New Mexico State 66-33 I think. It was 35-3 at halftime and, they scored 30 points in the second half. I'll never forget all the alums said, 'Boy it was so nice of you to substitute everybody,' and we didn't put in a guy. We couldn't stop them. They were just running up and down the field. Then we go to UCLA and Richard Walton gets hurt, we're down 35-3 at halftime, and I thought that one might beat the 66-3 from the year before. The guys came back and played well, but it was Major [Applewhite]'s first game was at Kansas State. I'll never forget, before the indoor area, we had to stay indoors the whole week when those monsoons came in from the coast. We didn't practice outdoors. So Major's first game was against a great Kansas State team in Manhattan and we got beat, 48-7 . We've come a long way since that time, but you also look at Oklahoma and Kansas State - they're the only two teams in the league right now that since we've been here in 1998, we don't have a winning record over. We're 4-5 with Oklahoma and 2-2 with Kansas State . That'll be something we'll talk about with our kids this week.

On Major Applewhite's play during that Kansas State game
Well, he made it through. That was the thing. To show you about all the Heisman talk, I think Ricky [Williams] had 32 yards, so he was out of the Heisman forever in that game , at least until the next week.

On Kansas State QB Josh Freeman
Like Colt, he just showed up this year on the scene. They had about four quarterbacks in the spring in a new program. They were putting in a new offense and trying to find out who the guy would be. Josh is a big, good-looking guy that is strong-armed, but can run and beat you. They played well in the fourth quarter, they came back Saturday against Colorado :bs:, but he probably broke out against Oklahoma State. They had a big lead in the fourth quarter, and he drove them down and scored twice late in the game to win. He's becoming more accurate, you can tell he's getting a lot more confident. That just happens with a young guy, but he's a guy that we'll all see a lot of in the future. There are so many good young quarterbacks in this league. That's something that none of us were prepared for when the league started. You look at what Graham Harrell is doing, you go up to Missouri and Texas A&M and you just look around the league, and a lot of the guys now are freshmen and sophomores that can be really reckoned with. Next year, we will not be talking about the youth at quarterback in this league.

On the status of the Longhorn secondary this week (they have been banged up)
When you get that much pressure up front, it helps your secondary. When people stop the run and give up passing yards, it's not always just that guy. I think it's obvious when one gets beat deep or something, but last week, we put very little pressure on Graham Harrell in the first half. In the second half, we got a lot of pressure and played a lot better; we shut them out. The guys are healthier, Michael Griffin had his best game, we thought, and made some huge plays; that hit on the option and the interception were obvious plays. Marcus [Griffin] looks better finally :crybaby:, both ankles are doing better, he had his hands on an interception and nearly got it. Aaron Ross is playing so well. We've talked about the Thorpe Award, he should maybe be considered for other awards too nationally. I've just never seen a guy make that big of an impact for us in the secondary. Tarell Brown probably has been the most courageous because he's just out there limping , and he had his hands on a couple of balls Saturday night with a chance to make some plays too. Hopefully here at the end, as we get better, those guys get healthier because we know they're good players, we just wish they were 100 percent.

UT Players

OT Tony Hills on KSU
I haven't had a chance to watch film yet. I'm going to watch it tonight, but you have to give those guys credit because they're out there playing their hearts out, and we just have to make sure we keep Colt (McCoy) protected so he doesn't have to take any shots. We just need to do whatever we can do to help Colt (McCoy) go out there and perform well.

QB Colt McCoy on KSU
They're tough; their defensive coordinator [Raheem Morris ] spent some time at Tampa Bay, so he is going to probably throw a lot of different looks at us. We're going to have to be prepared just like we are every week. Somebody is going to do something different every time to try and stop us, so we just need to be prepared and ready. They're a tough football team and they won on the road last week against Colorado.

CB Aaron Ross on K-State spreading the ball
We played Baylor and Tech, and they spread the ball as well as anybody, so we'll be prepared - especially with Coach Chizik and Coach Akina behind us, I'm sure we'll have a great game :hope:.

OG Justin Blalock On the ability to clinch the Big 12 South with a win at Kansas State
That should be a major motivation for you. If we play well this week, we go on to represent the Big 12 South in the Championship Game. There's too much at stake to overlook anyone, especially Kansas State, especially with so much at stake.

S Michael Griffin On Kansas State
They like to run the ball, and they like to throw the ball, but the big thing is that the quarterback is 6-6, 240 lbs. He's a big guy. When he runs, it's like taking down a tight end or something . We know they're capable of putting points on the board. They have a great defense and they win games :jerkoff:. They're in the Big 12, so you know it's going to be tough.

DT Frank Okam On Kansas State offense
We'll get a lot of different looks. They're going to line up in their jumbo package and come down and hit you, but we'll see a lot of zone, bootlegs and play-action passes. They usually have one of the biggest offensive lines in the Big 12 :bs:, so we've got to get ready to face that.

WR Quan Cosby On Kansas State
On the road, you are always going to deal with a hostile crowd. I think in every game, you should be trying to get them out of it early. It is always good for momentum. It is pretty important to try to get on the board or do something positive to get momentum.

WR Quan Cosby On the forecast for Saturday
It won't worry me, because it's the name of the game. Going up north, you have the possibility of it getting colder and the possibility of rain. It is one of those things you have to play through. There is nothing you can really do about. It is just like the Nebraska game. Who would have predicted it would be a blizzard, but we played hard through it. You have just to deal with your circumstances.
