Title: Apple presser tommorrow...
Post by: ThisIsHappening on January 26, 2010, 01:37:39 PM
Is anyone else as excited as I am about the Apple keynote presentation tomorrow?

the apple tablet is probably being introduced, and more recently there are talks of releasing the new iPhone to most of the other cellular carriers including Verizon.

have fun with your Zune

It's a big iphone that is an awkward size and has no market. What's so great about it? The only good thing from this whole thing is it's 1 Ghz CPU. Everything else is a bore. Have fun with your inch wide bezel and your mlb.com app (Great job marketing to your audience there, if you know what I mean).

The only thing that can save this is a sub $500 price tag.

not a fan of the tab. as i feared, its too large.

doubtful on the sub 5hundy range.

the market is hardcore mac peeps that update to the new products that are released, just like any other loyal customer. not that big of a market, but im sure they will buy enough to get by.

okay great, put in a good word for me.  tell them i got like a big awesome T.V. or something (you can make this up)

I imagine that it wont be too terribly long until apple updates the thing to more competitive specs compared to other netbooks

Why?

Good effort, but lacks some key features:

1. Disappointed in the aspect ratio.  4:3 (1.33:1) I guess is okay to watch 16:9 (1.78:1) movies, but 1.85:1 and 2.39:1 will look small.

2. I could do without a camera, but no front-facing video camera for iChat?  C'mon.

3. No GPS.  You get assisted GPS with the 3G models, but not the same thing.  You do get a compass though, I guess.

4. No WiFi/Bluetooth sync?  This one is a dealbreaker for me.  I don't want to have to plug into my desktop everytime I want to sync something.  And I would love to sync photos/videos from my iPhone wirelessly.

5. Would like to see a repackaged iLife suite (similar to what they did for iWork).  Simple iPhoto and iMovie apps.  Hell, you can edit videos on the iPhone, why not the iPad (hate, hate, hate that name by the way).  These might come in the future from Apple or 3rd party though, who knows.

6. It appears no multi-tasking.  I can understand not putting it on the iPhone, but why not for this?

7. Still looks like not flash support (from the live event), although no official word yet.  I know HTML5 and java are the future, but flash support in the meantime would be great.

8. I wish Apple would've redesigned the home screen/app layout, not just copied from the iPhone.  Looks out of place.

9. 1 inch bezel.  Ugh.

10. Pricing.  Got excited for a minute when I saw $499.  But Top of the line model (64GB + 3G) will cost you $829.  Plus $14.99 (250MB) or $29.99 (Unlimited) a month for separate 3G data plan.  At least there is no contract though.

11. AT&T.  Seriously Apple?  What good is my $829 iPad (+$29.99 data plan) driving from Denver to Manhattan?  Yes it supports Edge, but that isn't a feature.  It's a crutch.  And I am worried that the deal Apple struck with AT&T to offer the "breakthrough pricing" for the data plans means Apple had to give something up in return.  Like extended exclusivity for AT&T?  I want my Verizon iPhone dammit.

Anyway, the app interfaces look great, really fast and smooth.  Love the menu pop-ups/fly-overs.  Wish they would implement this into iPhone OS 4.0.  Also wish the next gen iPhone will be same aluminum housing.

Has internal microphone.  So I guess skype will work.  But again, no freakin iChat.

The iPad?     You can't make this sh*t up, what a garbage company.

Well, I guess some good news on the 3G data plan.  the iPad comes unlocked, and takes a microSIM card.  And supports GSM (850, 900,1800, 1900 MHz) and UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz). So Tmobile could support in future. Nevermind.  Tmobile uses 1700MHz for 3G, so no dice.

So I could waltz into my local Verizon store and have the 'pad activated on their network?

Nope.  Same as the iPhone.  GSM only.  For now.

I sincerely hope that iPad (LOL if they're really calling it that) fails miserably, and a 1-inch thickness is a solid start on that front.  It's scary to imagine Apple dominating video and e-book markets.  Music is enough - thanks.  I'm astounded that so many people are willing to buy DRM-laden music through itunes.  Apple is for technological scenesters.  I applaud their brilliant marketing efforts (scenester recruitment, if you will) because they've absolutely dominated markets with significantly pricier but comparable / marginally better products.  I voted for Kerry and Obama.  :ohno:

1/2" thick.  The 1" was in reference to the bezel around the screen (although it is not a true bezel, since the flat screen goes all the way to the edge.  But a lot of black nontheless.).

Good article on why the iPad is bad in terms of openness:

http://lifehacker.com/5458690/the-problem-with-the-apple-ipad (http://lifehacker.com/5458690/the-problem-with-the-apple-ipad)

Also, why the iPad might succeed:

But I still won't buy one.  And I'm a fanboy.
