Kansas (Turner Gill, Buffalo head coach): A
The former Nebraska star returns to the Big 12, where he will now go head-to-head with the Huskers. What Gill pulled off at Buffalo -- taking over the worst program in Division I-A, bar none, and leading it to a MAC title three years later -- is one of the most remarkable accomplishments of the past decade. And his ties to the Heartland should help elevate Kansas' recruiting profile.

It's amazing the difference between the objective, unbiased sports journalist and the angry, non-objective Powertard.

You should use your sports knowledge to predict how Gill will do.
-
I'd give it an A+ myself. I was soooo happy Jim Harbaugh said no to all that money that uk was going to throw at him, and said I'm good I'll just stay at Stanford.
-
Even if you do consider the hire good there's no way you can say that the money you're paying him is good for you guys. You are paying home twice as much as he is worth right now. I believe I read that he made less than $500k at Buffalo. You guys could have gotten him for a quarter to a half a mil more than that and that's it. He's being outrageously overpaid.
-
"Toooootally, us overpaying him is good because it exhibits to whoever the next coach is that we're willing to make a commitment to football." --BMW, during those times he doesn't run away for months after our team skull-fracks his team after months of him talking trash.
-
Question: If Gill doesn't have success at ku is that proof that his God doesn't exist?

And yet you regret not trusting us when it came to Mangino.

taking over the worst program in Division I-A, bar none, and leading it to a MAC title three years later
Three years later would be largely the senior leadership of the previous coach. The same way ron prince made a bowl in his first year---using Snyder's players.
-
The national media was all about giving props to Miss State when they hired Sylvester Croom as well. How did that work out? They don't have much choice but to give high grades when someone hires a black head coach.
Gill is a decent hire who might work out but the idea that a guy that had one good season at Buffalo is some kind of a slam dunk grade A hire is absurd. It's not like he picked ku over mulitple offers or something. Any school in the big 12 could have had Gill if they wanted him including KSU or ISU the previous year when they had openings.
-
this will make the fall all that much farther...
-
So does Gill get a free subscription and one of those football shaped phones for that A rating??
-
LOL. Mandel? More like Man,Idon'tknowmuchaboutcollegefootball.
Mandel is not one of the best in the biz.
-
still waiting to hear commentary from Phil Steele before i decide if Gil was actually a good hire.
-
Noticed that they ranked Gill way ahead of the recent hires at Tennessee and USC. Never thought I'd see the day when ku was able to hire a better coach than those two programs.

You are cheezing over a coach who hasn't coached a single down because of ONE sports columnist?
good God, there really are ZERO intelligent ku fans.

for your team. He has literally done nothing for you so far.

Dan Hawkins was thought of as a great hire as well, just saying. it's a freaking crap shoot
-
Gill is a lot better suited for the Big 12 than Dan Hawkins, IMO. If Gill can recruit, I believe he'll have success. So far his recruiting has sucked, though.

Hopefully for ku fans he can "Coach Em' Up." God knows thats what we rely on.

Gill runs more of a spread offense, while Hawkins has more of a pro style offense. Right now, the spread offense is more suited for the Big 12.

As ou CLEARLY demonstrated last year... The spread is dead.

More love for Gill:

Before taking over at the University of Buffalo, Turner Gill was the quarterbacks coach at the University of Nebraska, coaching Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch as well as Tommie Frazier.
Not only was Gill a coach at Nebraska, he was also courted heavily by the school out of Arlington Heights High School in Forth Worth, TX. Nebraska beat out Texas as well as Oklahoma because Nebraska allowed Gill to not only play football but baseball as well.
During Gill's coaching tenure, the Cornhuskers won three national championships.
Gill interviewed for the head coaching job at the University of Auburn— losing out to Gene Chizik—in a move that was highly criticized by ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach. "More than anything else, the Tigers needed to do something to sway some of the momentum away from Tuscaloosa," Schlabach noted.
Instead, Auburn hired a coach who seemed to be a dead man walking at Iowa State. In recent weeks, Chizik demoted both his coordinators and fired two assistant coaches. "That's not a sign of stability." - Mark Schlabach
Gill looks to bring the Jayhawks back into the thick of things in the Big XII conference, especially after they won five straight to open the 2009 season, then dropped their final seven to finish the season 5-7.

I'm happy for Gill and all the "love" he is getting. If he fails to put out a winning team, will you continue to "give him love?" Quit acting like he is saving ku football....theres not much to save.
P.S. Hows the Gridiron Club construction coming along? Will it be done by the first game?

It's just too easy.

It's just incredible the difference in opinion when you compare the unbiased journalist and the angry, inferiority complexed powertard.

I agree that the Gill hire is an "A" for ku. His overall winning % most closely matches ku's conference winning %.
(40% Gill, 32% ku conference winning %)
Well done, Sweet Lew! Can I see your spreadsheet on that, or is it part of a workbook with your Gridiron Club projections that's sure to put money in the university coffers?

i'm starting to come on board here. I think its time we do recognize that this is definitively the best ukans could do.

You know you've hit rock bottom when you get on your rivals site and brag about what grade ONE guy gave your coaching hire. I give him an A+++++ then...I guess I just tacked on a couple more wins for Gill considering whatever grade someone gives you directly correlates with how many wins hes going to have.
