Title: Observations after having finally rewatched the Texas game.
Post by: McGrowlTowelZac on January 20, 2010, 11:03:10 PM
Just randomly throwing out what I observed.  Feel free to agree or dispute.

-A lot of talk of how Texas shutdown Jake and Denis.  Won't argue that they didn't play some really good defense on them; however, Jake easily missed 4-6 open jumpers that he normally makes.  These were shots he was open for and not with a hand in his face, shots won't miss very often.

-My apology to Lu, I unfairly undervalued your performance.  Lu played some really good defense and minus a couple of turnovers and a bad foul or two, he had a great game.  Even after he got crushed in the balls by Dom he came down the floor and beat Texas to a rebound.

-Irving had just some great defense for the time he played.

-Bob Knight sucked even worse than I realized the first time around.  He railed on just about every jump shot we took because we missed them.  Didn't matter if it was a open jumper or not, when we missed it, it was apparently the worse shot he'd ever seen.

-When Frank waved to the crowd to get up...priceless.

-When Frank and Denis laughed to each other after Denis missed yet another free throw and Knight railed about how it was not a moment for laugh...then Denis calming hit nothin but net...freakin amazing.

I had a couple more when I sat down to write this, but curses on my bad short term memory.

I found it amazing that knight said nothing about UT, while he coached us the entire game.

Noticed that.  He really wanted us to win.

Think he just hates Texas.  At one point when Jamar got called for an offensive foul trying to gain position, Knight commented that Texas has been doing that for years and he always had to complain to officials about it.

THIS!

Amazing valuable minutes this dood gave. I'm really excited that he's on the team. He's really played the most consistent quality ball of any of the freshman... of course  McGruds is giving him some competition finally.

Loved how Irving got the steal on the same play Balbay beat Denis on like four straight times.

I too apologize for my earlier rampage colon. He did very well.

I wonder who will fill the void as the hitman/bruiser next year.  Colon may not score much, but his D and the way he beats the crap out of guys on other teams allows you to find out who is afraid of an a$$-kicking very quickly.  After getting elbowed/run over, pushed around 5 or 6 times down the floor by big Lu, they tend to begin to pull back and/or get off their game/style of play.

I see some tough guys on the KSU team that play great, tough D, but I don't know if any will have the same enforcer aura about them.  If someone doesn't step in to fill the role I believe we will miss Colon quite a bit (maybe Freddy will be that type of guy, but having not seen him play at all, I just don't know).

Later,
Sam S.

Did Texas really have a ton of uncontested missed layups?  Barnes swore that they did, but I don't remember it like that at all.

Asprilla will be our enforcer, and he will be able to score as well.

LU played a whale of a game on Monday.

They missed a few, but nowhere near the amount that Barnes acts like they did. Damion James missed a finger roll on a fast break towards the end of the game and they missed a lay-in or two. Other than that, no. K-State missed wide open jumpers too, so Barnes' argument is moot anyways.

I remembered a couple other things from the game.

-I liked our 3-2 defense with McGruder at top of the key, I thought when we went to it helped slow Texas some.  I think if I remember we used it at CU too.

-Our inbound pass under the basketball we're trying to score is getting old.  You know where we just toss out to the top of the key basically, I think Texas stole it once.  But we've been doing this same inbound pass for a couple years now.  Can we really not design a better play then this and run it once in a while?

Frank is a "get the ball in off the inbound play" coach, not a "score off the inbound play" coach.  This is really a pretty good way to do that if it is your goal b/c you have to defend the basket.  Plus, there are picks and such we do off of that, we swing the ball off of it, etc.  Its a philosophy deal, kind of like Frank's offense, so don't expect it to change anytime soon.

The inbounds play that was stolen was actually a different play. Sometime this season the guy guarding the guy who gets the ball will turn his back on the inbounder and the old off the back pass lay-up will ensue. I'm really hoping that happens against uk.
