Basketball: Fans, Students and team

After watching several games the past few days on ESPN (mostly replays), one thing has been constant with the games...

Attendance at K-State, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, even Drake and Butler, is pretty strong, with lots of students, and lots of noise, which obviously affects how both teams play!

One thing I have never understood....why have the OSU students stopped being more of a factor in both attendance and noise at OSU basketball games? There are a limited number of student tickets even available (about 1/6 roughly of student enrollment)...are they so expensive that so many students can't afford them? If that's the case, then a pass is earned. Regardless of the teams' overall record, why would support waiver?

As for regular fans...I can understand roughly 1700 people no longer having season tickets...there are a lot of factors that have lead to that number since about 2005-6, including economy, difficulties accepting coaching changes, choices, etc. However, again I am at a loss figuring out how so many people who DO have season tickets fail to attend games, or see that someone does attend games when they can't use their seats!

I can only tell you that when I was in school (roughly early 80's), I did whatever it took to attend EVERY game. Let's remember, the success level wasn't even where it is currently, but the games themselves were so exciting. The adrenalin rush of any game was something that I wouldn't have traded (well, maybe but that's not a public forum discussion!). There was one argument that I could make for students having more fun in those days...we did have seats at courtside, literally four feet from the court. But, the teams weren't as successful, save 1983.

I guess my point is this...look around the country at these arenas. Most of the schools that I mentioned don't have quite the feeling of tradition that OSU's GIA has. They have similar enrollments (not all, but most), in college towns. Why are they showing up in force for games and giving their teams that home-court advantage and our students/fans are not?

I will say that even myself, as a tremendous basketball fan, will not go and watch games from the 300 sections...for me, it's too far away to enjoy the game, and I enjoy the game for the basketball, not the excitement, and I can't justify buying season tickets when I can only attend a small handful of games. If I was still a student, I promise I would not miss one game, and would be right in the middle of the rowdiness (without costuming...never did that part).

For a college student, there can't more SOBER or CLEAN fun than college football and basketball (and sometimes baseball and wrestling). For those students that do attend regularly, then can attest, and they obviously get it. For everyone else, try it! You'll find that your adrenalin will force you to find ways to attend more games! It isn't just about wins, it's about the excitement and fun that you can have yelling for the Cowboys/Cowgirls and harrassing opponents and officials! (We once had this Brazilian dude that played at K-State (Eduardo Galvao) so spooked that he threw five passes to Casper and threw up six air-balls, and Jack Hartmann had to bench him for the duration because he was killin the Cats. That's good clean fun!)

As for everyone else...like in football, if you want a winning program, home-court advantage is a must, and that takes committed fans attending games and making things loud!

Give this team a little momentum, and things will turn around very quickly! Unfortunately, we opened the door for uo to gain some momentum and they're now back in the picture. However, with a big win tonight, along with some confidence, this team (and Coach Ford) can push forward and get things rolling in a positive way again!

Sober?  This guy obviously doesn't get it.
