Title: BFD
Post by: Dan Rydell on November 05, 2006, 05:05:24 PM
So we went to triple overtime with Washburn in an exhibition game.   We were 4 for 30 on three-point attempts.  Sounds like we had some interesting substitution/playing time patterns.  If the guys really played as well as we've heard against Marquette, then it wouldn't surprise me at all if some or all of them expected to just show up yesterday and win by 20.

Heck yes it would have been better to have beaten them by 50.  This result really didn't surprise me much, though.  Earlier this week I was thinking that this could be a pretty close game.  New players, new coach, new system.

Would it really have been that much better to beat them by 50 like everyone expects. It seems with this game we recieved:

A reality check
55 minutes worth of conditioning
Close game experience

I know I would rather have destroyed WU but this game being close wasn't a horrible thing.

I was able to catch some of it, but I left Denver pretty late so I didn't get to hear most of the game.

This game was used to look at other players and prove a point. That's all. Shock shouldn't get to excited over thiat game because it measured nothing. Things will be differnt when the real play starts.

Okay.  For now.  The next time the players are not "prepared," a meltdown is in order.

if you guys wouldn't spew so much sh*t about how great of a coach hugs is and how he prepares players so well and how he makes so many great in game adjustments, people might not be as upset.

Huggs still > than Self. Let's not forget the very close game ku played to Washburn in '04.

Wow, apparently that one went completely over your head. The point was that ku almost lost to Washburn in '04 just like Kansas State this year but still managed to sweep K-State, have a 22-5 regular season record and get to the NCAA tourney. I'll take that any day.

FTS.  If we do that again and people aren't pissed, there's something wrong.

1st, I didn't see the game so I can only comment based on what I've heard and read, but I agree for the most part with not holding too much concern.  I think 4 factors play in here that are legit.  1) Although WU played with ku a little, ku won by 30 just 3 nights before.  2) This is Bob Huggins.  We didn't expect close wins vs D2 schools with Huggins.  3) We heard the reports of a "win" over Marquette in last week's scrimmage.  4) WU was a pretty bad D2 team last year.

All of those combined and others probably inflated our expectations going into this game.  I think there are some reasons for concern (shooting; especially from 3, rebounding, ball handling, no shows like Wright and Harris to name a few), but we really don't know what we have right now.  We shouldn't make too much of a successful scrimmage vs Marquette OR a close win vs a D2 school.  However, its not unreasonable after seeing us play that ugly to have some concern.  At the end of the day, neither of our preseason games/action really will be completely indicitive of what this season will bring.

Huggins obviously has a lot of work to do not only getting this team to play the way he wants, but getting these kids completely bought in to what he's trying to do.  Obviously saturday showed that's not the case right now.  Hopefully we see a much better performance next week in a game that counts vs W&M.
