If Denver is 'in the area', I would have to say Casa Bonita. I was a cliff diver there once. (and 2nd alternate as a violinist in the Mariachi band)

Jesus. You sound fascinating.
What about during your time in Lawrence? Carlos O' Kelley's?

La Familia (that means 'family')
Although I don't have one of my own, I like to go there and watch other people's families.

Our differences aside, do you still play?

the cliff divers and sideshow stuff gets pretty old after you've seen it once or twice but the food is just fantastic. when i used to live in denver, we would call in takeout orders and just come home and eat it. really authentic.

With the economy and all, gigs are hard to com by. The odd thing about my industry is that most people that hire a mariachi band prefer little fat mexicans that look weathered by life. I, on the other hand, as also stated in a previous thread am quite tall, dark and handsome. To answer your question, yes I still play but I'm transitioning to tableside serenades in Italian restaurants. Allthough I am Mexican, I look very much like an Italian.

Way to re-invent yourself Dooley. It's THIS kind of entrepreneurial spirit that is going to get us all out of this economic down-turn. I continue to be impressed by the Mexican work ethic....a noble people.

I really like Dos Reales on 75th street in Overland Park.
They have the traditional style carne asada tacos that look like this...

Key ingrediants are diced white onion and cilantro. :lick:

I went to Casa Bonita in Tulsa in mid 80's after a KSU game in Stillwater and thought it was the best ever. Always wanted to go back or go to the one in Denver. Got a chance to go to Denver Casa Bonita a couple of years ago after skiing at Breckenridge. The food was not good and I thought it was not much better than fast food slop. Was very disappointed.

Don't remember seeing them but that doesn't mean they weren't there. The place had several different "areas". We were a group of guys a couple of years away from graduating from KSU so the family entertainment wasn't something we were focused on.

Go to Cancun in Westport and get the street tacos. They are what you are describing except more awesome. You have to squeeze some lime juice on them.

you think that, but you'd get tired of it.

OP Mexican - Mi Ranchito FTMFW!
I'm 29, but when I was 'bout 6 or 7, we went to Casa Bonita's in Denver. Of all the kids, some went before me, I got picked to try and break the pinata. I broke that mfer in half. I'm still glowing about that one.

I'll bet that was a magical experience. Growing up, we'd go out to CO to go skiing about every winter and we'd hit the Casa Bonita on the way back. I always loved the puppet shows and "Black Bart's Cave." I was never picked for the pinata, but desperately wanted to be chosen. I am really jealous of you as I sit here and type this.
Daris, you should probably update the MHK franchise thread with a traditional taco joint.
