Not my thing, but thanks for the 'gesstion.
Lady GaGa is pretty good for when I want some good Dancey-Pop lemme check out the new stuff.
I like music with a groove, not a huge fan of most "emo/twee" stuff. Fave band is prob ozomatli. Also enjoy 90's Jamz and I like trashy techno-pop as well.

100% on the mark.
michiganrusty3ksu music rep is well earned it seems.
anymore (in the vague similar vein [doesn't have to be that close to the Sharon Jones suggestion])?

If you're looking for neo/retro soul, Raphael Saadiq is pretty fantastic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-fS0kW-I64 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-fS0kW-I64)
As is Mayer Hawthorne, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBKx8PyE5qQ&feature=channel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBKx8PyE5qQ&feature=channel)
For definite grooves and elements of trashy techno-pop, I highly recommend Major Lazer for both the jams and the Tim Warehiem directed videos.

Yeah, Mayer Hawthorne is great. Another good electo pop group is Chromeo. (saw them at Bonnaroo 08 :gocho: )

If you dig the raw guitar thing, Band of Skulls is one I've been listening to lately. More dancy is Metric -- saw the two of them live together recently and really enjoyed it.
Not your thing, but I'm pretty much convinced Muse is underrated despite the hype.
You like MGMT at all?

To be honest I had never heard of MGMT, so I checked some of their stuff out. Not too bad, nice 80's feel to them.

Haven't paid much attention to Mastodon, but the new album is absolutely sick. LOVE it
That one, Oblivion, and Crack the Skye are sooo good.
As for Chings, I got nothin :dunno:

Crack the Skye is possibly THE greatest album of 2009, rivaled only Wrath from Lamb Of God. :hookem:
-
Cool to see others who dig Crack the Skye. I can't get enough of it.

Oh yeah, the album is incredible, I got it the day I came out and still play it constantly on my ipod.

If you are into the soul bit why wouldn't you just suck the teet of the source. I like things like mayer hawthorne but his voice is uber lacking. there are some gems out there.

Agree for the most part, but Sharon Jones live is incredible.
And that link is really good.

I focused on the new part of "New Tunes" and the fact that he seemed to like Sharon Jones.
If you want some classic soul, listen to something on Staxx. If you want classic reggae, listen to something Trojan.

that link i gave wasn't reggae. wailing wailers and the wailers are for the most part completely different. especially the studio one stuff.
not a huge fan of reggae, but there are a few people i will listen to for it.
The Gladiators are one of em.
also not really interested in the soul conversation, but there, as i said some gems out there, thought i would share, as that one right there is lost on a lot of peoples list.

If you use the Wailers (at any point of their career) as an example of soul, I didn't figure I should get into the subtleties of Jamaican music.
F' it, I'm going to go listen to the new Clipse.

After a few initial listens, I wouldn't say it's quite "Hell Hath No Fury," but I'd still recommend it.

Haven't listened to the Grouch and Eligh, I'll have to check them out, and I haven't heard all of the CunninLynguists but I remember liking what I heard.
I don't have much of a list for rap album of the year, I like Kid CuDi's album but I think Lil Wayne's "No Cielings" mixtape has probably got as many plays on my stereo as anything. And after listening to "'til the Casket Drops" a few more times, the new Clipse is pretty damn good. Just more poppy than I was expecting.

if you like TTCD, you should download the mixtape that the clipse put out as a promo for their clothing line. it's called Road to 'Til the Casket Drops.
Better, IMO.

Yeah, that Play Clothes mixtape is great. It had me expecting something totally different than what the new album turned out to be, but it's grown on me.
