Failed?  30+ years since his last losing season is failure?  What he didn't do was maintain his streak of 14 straight years finishing in the top 5 nationally (in both polls).  Of course nobody else has ever experienced such success, so nobody could have maintained it either.  So unreal expectations by the fans is at fault.  They're similar to Nubb fans really.

Bowden hadn't beat Florida since 2003.....and South Florida this year was an embarrassing loss in their view.........and FSU wants to be a national headline every week and winning 6 or 7 games and going to just another bowl game doesn't fly. The boosters won't stand for that.

The guy didn't fail, just recently didn't produce on the field up to what the typical standards were that he set at FSU.

College football is about talent but coaching is a HUGE component of it, as well. When kids leave high school, no matter how talented, they don't know how to play football at the Div-IA level.

Its why you see teams every year like Boise, Utah, Cinci, etc. that don't get the great crops of highly rated high school talent but manage to coach up the talent they have and implement a system that, if they get the players for, can be successful despite what they might lack in talent.

ran an outdated offensive system.

I don't think it was so much that as it was the game has become more skilled and complex.  Think about how much of a culture shock Hal Mumme was to the SEC and Mike Leach was to the Big 12.  Ten to 15 years ago the offenses weren't as complex and Bowden could get by defensively with his superior athletes and on offense he was ahead of most teams in terms of having a pro-style passing offense.  In addition to that I think the game has become more complex and the skill level higher at the high school level.  It's difficult to just "out athlete" every team the way a Barry Swizter used to do in his days at OU.

I think Bowden is less of an attention to detail sort and certainly not a strict disciplinarian.  The guy he's competing against in Florida, Urban Meyer, is the perfect storm.  The guy can recruit, it's his way or the highway, he's a detail freak, etc.  He's the best in the game and is going to dominate as long as he's at Florida.
