Title: Share your own personal coach abuse stories here . . .
Post by: sonofdaxjones on November 18, 2009, 05:01:26 PM
I've sat a box of tissues out for those who need it and I'll start:

My high school football coach was a real hard ass.   Suburban KC high school, he won a couple of state titles in the 1970's, multiple D1 players came through during that time.   He used to grab guys by the facemask and shake the bejeezus belt out of them while chewing a$$, we had "fight drill" which was basically the entire team in a circle while 2 guys literally went out and fought each other in the middle.   He'd say stuff about guys families to berate them.

The basketball coach used to drill basketballs into the back of your head if you turned away from the ball on defense, and the assistant used to deliver hard forearm shivers to your chest if you didn't call out a pick.  Plenty of verbal abuse from the assistant coach.

I . . . I . . . can't continue . . .  :crybaby:

My cross country coach grabbed me by the back of the neck when i was complaining about a workout. He even told us all the "suck it up" and quit acting like little babies.

I should have reported him but I needed to man up. I mean, it was rough and tumble cross country.

Snapped my finger in two, they thought it was just dislocated, told me to get back in line and quit acting like a *****.  Tried to catch ball and damn near put me on my knee.  Coach, grabbed my finger said look away.  Yanked on it...figured out it wasn't dislocated when it felt like jello (his description on the way to the hospital)...he laughed when he realized it was broke  :curse:

My summer baseball coach discovered the fact that we were drinking beer in our hotel room.  He confiscated our beer, sat down by the pool,  and drank every one of them in clear view of us.  It's still hard for me to talk about.  I haven't been the same since.  That single incident is solely responsible for my crack habit and resulting career in street walking.

I played football in junior high before realizing I wasn't growing as fast as the other kids and  would get killed soon.  Anyway, if you happened to screw up in practice one of the coaches liked to grab your facemask and yank your head in his direction so his screams could be sent directly into your face.  Sometimes he would give your facemask an extra shake or two, or a nice shove when he was done yelling.  This was junior fracking high....to 12 and 13 year old kids.  Nobody complained to mommy and daddy that I know of.

So basically Arist Wright is either an enormous FP, or this whole "incident" is just being used by Lew to turn public opinion against Mangino and make the firing that much easier.

Freshamn football at MHS.  We didn't have a soul on the team that could kick and my childhood hero was Steve Willis.  So enter the right tackle as the kicker.  We were practicing kickoff coverage one day and I kicked the ball, hung back like a kicker does and got blindsided.  Knocked my flat on my face.  I let out a F&$^ pretty loud for sure.  I was ripped off the ground by the coach who was a good foot shorter than me and built like Mangino (manhattanites know who this is).  He proceeded to make my one work look small, the facemask grab and yank, pushing me around etc.  "You want to be the king of crap?"  I was running laps and sprints the rest of the afternoon.  I would say it was pretty well deserved.

What if Tony would have said something like: "If you're gonna talk like that why don't you go back to the hood and hang out with your hommies?"

Because that's a whole different deal than getting grabbed by the facemask and running a few sprints.

My freshman football coach was also the varsity wrestling coach who had won 3 straight state championships. I also had him 4th hour for Oklahoma History class. If one of his players fell asleep, he'd turn his state championsip rings upside down on his finger and hit you on the top of the head with them. Did it once, and never again did I fall asleep in (that) class. He drew blood when he hit our qb.

same school and class as catdoctor, different coach (not my coach for any sports but was my PE teacher and weightlifting teacher), 3 stories...

1) with PE/weightlifting teacher outside in ball field walking inside. he said something like "i ain't got none of those." i then said "well...i guess we now know why you are a PE teacher." he looked at me for two seconds, grabbed me, picked me up, body slammed me onto the field and repeatedly slammed my head against the ground.

2) someone threw a dirty towel on him when his back was turned in the weightlifting room. he turned around and saw three people. i was one (i did not throw the towel). he chased me down. grabbed me and repeatedly slammed my head against the ground. guess it was his "go to"

3) friends birthday. weightlifting room again. he grabs my friend by the balls, holds him down, takes the copenhagen or whatever out of his mouth and inserts it into my friends mouth.

My 8th grade football coach gathered us all around in a huddle. He then pokes two holes in the ground.  He pointed at the first hole and said "this is a hole in the ground."  He pointed at the second hole and said "this is your butt."  He points at me and says "which one is your butt."  I pointed at the second hole.

He screams at me "THAT'S A GOD DAMN HOLE IN THE GROUND, YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR BUTT FROM A HOLE IN THE GROUND!"  Everyone laughed at me.  It was a trick question.  I was humiliated.

The only thing that comforts me to this day is that he is dead.

I wish there had been a "Lew Perkins" at my junior high school.

During a game in 1998 non con, I was marching in pre-game and when I did the turn after the first Wildcat victory I marched backwards too fast and ran into the person behind me and fell on my back. I made a quick save and nothing bad happened.

That next Tuesday when Dr. Traz was breaking down our film of pre-game he singled me out with a very red laser pointer and everyone laughed. I cried and wet my pants. :crybaby:

The facemask grab and yank was a classic. Always managed to piss me off even more than I already was.

Our JV coach was 60-something years old and an ex kicker. While we were in lines stretching, he would stand behind us, punt the ball as high as he could, and hope to hit one of us. The pain wasn't all that bad but if you got one on the head it sure rattled you. To add insult to injury, you would hear his old man smokers laugh from 30 yards behind you.

If you were a Cornerback (which I was), if you didn't call out the crackback block on the Linebacker, he got to hit you with a 20 yard start from behind to teach you a lesson. That one was the worst IMHO. You caught on pretty quick.

As a skinny little freshman at a small high school, which still played 11-man in those days, coach literally picked me up and threw me into the onrushing star player and future Navy Seal. I flew backward, hitting my head in a whiplash motion on the turf. Coach was immediately concerned I'd had a concussion. I was OK, but shaken.

As a junior high basketball player in a town in NW Kansas, our coach used to shower with us at the end of every practice. Didn't really occur to me at the time how strange this actually was. That's not really the abuse part. His scrotum was the size of Santa's bag of toys in a Wal-Mart Christmas ad. I, like many of my teammates, remain traumatized to this day.

Great thread.

My wrestling coach was an badass. He (while on the juice) benched 520 in college and his brother wrestled at nubb. Anyway, we really liked this guy, but some days he would just beat the crap out of us. One day we decided that we were going to jump him and return the favor. Instead the team laid back while me and our 215lber got murdered. By the time the rest of the team decided to help the 300lb fatass had a tight waist on me that was compounded by their dogpile. I may or may not have crap my pants.  :crybaby:

these aren't abuse, really, and they weren't personal, I just witnessed them:

(1)  junior year, football...thursday practice, which is pretty much just a walkthrough practice, just upper shells...anyway, the offense is looking like crap, messing up and stuff, they're going against the scout team defense  ...coach stops a play as the OL is walking up to the LOS, comes in screaming like hell cussing all the offense up and down and praising the scout team D...he then turns and says something like "f*ck it, we won't use the ball" and just kicks the ball as hard as he can...but it only went about 3 feet before it was buried squarely in poor Jimmy's crotch...Jimmy falls down to the ground immediately and is crying loudly (this is hilarious, btw), coach blows the whistle, says "sorry jim, walk it off" and then asks for trainers to escort jim off the field.

(2)  freshman year, basketball....we've had a crappy practice and coach is sick of it, so he says, "we've got 45 minutes left, if we can't practice well, we'll run well" and we just start doing gasers...Geoff begins to drag behind after about 10 minutes of this...we're all waiting for him at the baseline and he's actually starting to really slow up...coach basically calls him a pussy..coach tells Geoff to go sit over on the bleachers...Geoff sits down and then falls over and passes out (he has a heart condition thingy that was unknow until that time) and the coach yells for someone to go call 911 and then proceed to give him cpr, we're all standing around and someone  :peek: says "if Geoff dies, do you think we're done with practice?", after that Geoff throws up in the coaches mouth while coach is giving him cpr and everyone begins bursting out in laughter.

While saying something, that I'm sure was all in fun to my HS basketball coach, I find that said coach has grabbed both of my thumbs and bent them downward so that they are both touching my forearms. Things may, or may not, have gone badly for me after that. Never played another year after that. Wrists still hurt when it's going to rain.

Still can't beat catzacker, though.

2nd week of 8th grade football I hurt my back on a tackling drill.  Kept practicing even though it hurt like a bitch.  Was doing drills later on practicing firing off the line.  It hurt to be in a set position, so I'd come up too fast to a standing position.  Coach hollered that it hurts more to move around like that than stay down.  Like he'd know.

Turns out I had seriously f'd up my back. Took several trips to the chiro to get it to pop back in place, but it still hurt.  Couldn't walk up stairs forward for a week, much less run.  Needless to say that was the end of my 8th grade season.

Our long-time basketball coach was known as having a bit of a temper. Not violent, just yelled.  Then he yelled at the wrong parent's kid in my class and he was forced out just 2 years after winning a state championship.  My guess is the principal didn't want his son, who was going to be a freshman the next year, to be yelled at by the mean coach.  A year later the principal took a job in Salina so his kid didn't have to be in a lowly 4A school.

friend of mine, not a fb player, tore his acl and damaged cartiledge as well in a collision at 1st base in pe softball game.  was laying on the ground in extreme pain.  :stretcher:

fb coach/pe teacher called him a pussy and told him to get up walk it off.  couldn't hardly walk so coach told him to run it off and sent him four laps aroud the 1/4 mile track laughing all the while.

the rest of us were  :ohno:

friend spent the next few months in cast/on crutches  :frown:

none of us freshmen said anything to anybody - afraid fb coach/pe teacher would find out and kill us :chainsaw:

fb coach/pe teacher died an early death - massive heart attack

H.S. D-Coord was a raging coke head that grew up in New Jersey and knew how to handle himself (a crazy mofo that intimidated every kid on the team).  The head coach called my number for a double tight near the goal line and I didn't hear him (I believe I was gawking at some skank) so he sends in another kid.  Coked up coach does the mask grab and nearly yanks my head off while  showering me with krank spit.  We score on the play and he starts in on me about the other kid being "instant offense" and that I was useless.  A few months later his truck tires lost their air somehow. :nahnah:

There was this A-hole coach on the MHS sophomore team who was just a ginormo douche nozzle.  One d00d on the team keyed his truck bigtime (take that), but every one of his players who hated him got the last laugh when he got fired and arrested for stealing seven computers from the high school and keeping them in his garage.

I recently saw him in a seat near mine at a KhazzouQATS game and had TrustTheDust take a picture of me playing air-computer with a worried look on my face and him in the background.  Needless to say, I am still laughing about Benjamin Trujillo going to the big house for stealing 7 (7!) 'puters and just letting them hang out in his garage.

While playing for the Brooks Barta in the state championship game my senior, it was tied in the fourth right b4 overtime. I was starting LB and and it was like 4th and3 and the other team took a time out and when we all came back out onto the field i did what the captin should do. I counted heads to make sure we had 11. The thing is I only counted 10 and I counted like 4 times and I was freaking out cause they werent in punt formation. So here I am like screaming for a t/o and I dont get one and luckily they punt the ball rugby style. Well the thing is nobody let me know that we had a safety like FORTY yards back and one other thing......we didn't have any time outs left.
See Barta is a pretty intense guy in practice and in the lockeroom, but on the sidline he acts like snyder. But after that play he almost taclked me and picked me up by the facemask with the strength like he was still in his playing days. He called me a fracking idiot and said "we dont have any FRACKING timeouts!!!" :curse:
I was very :frown: :-[ :ohno:
Thought I was gonna die, but luckily we won the game in double overtime and went undefeated state champs.

HS baseball coach loved to wear short shorts and we were always amazed at how large his package appeared to be. we didn't buy it though and always joked that he but a sausage down his pants before practice everyday. well he must have heard us because one day he put his foot up on the dugout bench and "accidentally" let it fall out.  swear to god he had a &@#%ing anaconda in his shorts.  i mean the thing was a monster.  i have felt inadequate ever since

Baseball coach stories tend to be the best imo.  I think football coaches, deep down, are all pussies who want everyone to think they aren't by traumatizing kids.  Baseball coaches, while they will traumatize the f^ck out of kids, don't really care about appearing to be tough and are usually good for buying beer after practice.  These are obviously broad generalizations but I think they hold true.  Maybe this is just my personal football/baseball coach experiences though.

Good thoughts Dave.

In High School our football coach was a sadistic a-hole, the baseball coach while not being sadistic was one of those mind game kind of guys, and was definitely not a "beer buyer".

 :Carl:

I had him my sophomore year as well. Tried to act badass but it's hard to do that when you're a freshman health teacher.

What if Tony would have said something like: "If you're gonna talk like that why don't you go back to the hood and hang out with your hommies?"

Because that's a whole different deal than getting grabbed by the facemask and running a few sprints.

He would always come up behind you and pinch us on the back of our arms. Another coach abuse story.

Tony would always steal the delicious treats my little sisters would make me.  He had a really good system for doing so too, he would hide in the darker corners of the locker room waiting to see what food everyone was bringing in.  Upon seeing something he liked he would scurry out and attack from behind, he would utilize his deadly pinch attack to distract his victim and then quickly grab whatever treats he could with his other hand.  He stole a lot of my cookies...  :'(

Baseball coach stories tend to be the best imo.

I tend to agree with this.  HS baseball coaches like a good combination of a your dad, your uncle, and your brother.  Now, coaches you had during summer leagues (who usually consisted of whatever dad thought he knew how to teach the proper way to bunt) were the ones that were mostly terrible.

Example1, coach in HS says "hey guys, the principals coming, clean out your dips" and then when the principal leaves says "catzacker, give me your can, i'm confiscating it because my can is out".

Example2, after blowing a lead and getting close to getting run ruled, summer coach walks up to the mound and says "get your sh*t and get off this f*cking field, you're an embarassment to me and I won't be run ruled", catzacker says "we ain't quitting, you can, but we aren't".

Agreed Baseball coaches are the best.  Friend of mine was playin at c-ville, pitching and sucking it up bad.  After a walk, Coach yells from the dugout "hartmann, what is this? (making a diamond shape around his crotchal region)" pitcher replies in a soft voice "a pvssy" Coach yells out 2x as loud "hartmann, what is this" (same gesture). pitcher yells as loud as he can "a pvssy" Coach responds with "exactly. you pitching like a f*cking pvssy"

Note this all occurred btw batters in the middle of an inning.

Also in hs after a loss had a coach take a chair out to centerfield and sit on it while we ran sprints for about an hr.

Ah memories.

Every one of my summer league coaches were Morris Buttermaker but possibly even more white trashy.  It was great.  Like, the trashiest people in town end up being the guys that you send your kids to hang out with because all of the non-trashy parents are to busy with jobs and whatnot to do it themselves.  It's the circle of life.

same school and class as catdoctor, different coach (not my coach for any sports but was my PE teacher and weightlifting teacher), 3 stories...

3) friends birthday. weightlifting room again. he grabs my friend by the balls, holds him down, takes the copenhagen or whatever out of his mouth and inserts it into my friends mouth.

all the same guy who may or may not have been the football coach at mhs a year or two ago.

Sounds like something Ol' Clyde Wilkens would do. My football weights class once spent an entire class period watching video of him hunting a raccoon. It was kind of strange.

My high school coach waa also an assistant coach on my summer team.  He was definitely the beer buying/showing up to games totally blitzed type of guy.  Good guy though.  One of the younger guys complained to his mommy about being hazed.  Our coach heard about via the principal and promptly kicked the kid off the JV team cause "he doesn't coach cry baby little momma's boys."

Great personal coach abuse stories here.

Makes me recall my high school tennis days and a particular encounter with a foreign doubles team from MHS.  My partner and I had run into these showboats a couple time on the junior USTA circuit.  Real flashy, like a lot of foreigners are.  State was around the corner so this was a pretty important match.  Well we took a one set lead, ground strokes were clicking and my partner's serve was over powering these guys.  Wasn't even close, bageled them in the first.  We started goofing off a bit, aiming for their crotches on overheads, swatting each other with towels during the change overs, games with the Gatorade etc.  Well, Manhattan High fought back and won the second set.  Took game seven on ball that was clearly in, but we got hooked.  So, we go to a third and we could both tell coach was getting irate.  Pacing around, fuming, getting real angered up.  We end up in a tie-break in the third and on match point, my partner tries to hit a drop shot from mid-court for no apparent reason that clips the top of the net and rolls out.  Coach proceeds to storm on to the court, rips both raquets out of our hands, wraps them around the net post, and huffs the shattered remains into the parking lot.  All the while going off on like a five minute obscenity filled tirade about how tennis players from Johnson County don't bus into flyover country and lose to a school like Manhattan High.  How we "made an ass out of him" and if it happens again "how he was really going to put a show on for these people".  Well we were pretty much in shock, but coach later apologized to both of us when we took our team shower together afterward.  Message sent, though.

Needless to say, two weeks later we won State.  And we never lost another high school match to a couple foreigners again.

our head coach would throw that ball at you if you weren't paying attention/talking while he was, i got caught talking.  He throw the ball my way and low and behold it hit me right in the jinglebells. I dropped to my knees, couldn't breath etc. (I may have milked it a little) sat on the bench icing my balls the rest of practice, shook it off and went home.  The next game the coach went up to my mom and apologized like crazy I guess, my mom had no idea what he was talking about, you know why???  :steadymobbin':
