Title: Good news for GRCOAT
Post by: ChicoRodriguez on October 29, 2006, 01:17:31 AM
The same person who told me about Bill Walker coming here even before Fitz mentioned it told me tonight that OJ Mayo has committed to K-State.  We are going to weather the storm of any NCAA investigation and stick with him.  If he plays college ball it will be at Kansas State.

Heard similar. But he pretty much isn't going to play college ball.

i hope either pullen or sutton doesn't make it, go to juco, have mayo for a year, and then have them play for us when they get done with that.  maybe this is what huggs wanted(http://www.ksufans.com/forums/Themes/KSUFans/images/post/lamp.gif)

J-Mart said in chat yesterday there was no way OJ will be eligible.  :crybaby:

Said he would probably visit though.

Thanks for the news, Chico.

Ive heard Mayo wants to be at KSU, but Huggs doesnt want Mayo. It doesnt matter, he isnt making it so I dont know why all you blowhards give a damn.. Give it up.

No one here knows what will happen one way or the other.  As long as it is a possibility, we should hope for him to be at KSU.  Without question.

is his problem grades??? maybe he'll work his ass off next semester and we can get him.

Mayo won't have any problems with grades.  He isn't as good of a student as Bill Walker is, but few kids are!  Mayo's problem may come from gifts and favors from potentials agents -- like how in the %$#! was he was able to fly out to Los Angeles twice to check out USC, because his family isn't well enough off to be able to afford that kind of stuff.  I am still in the camp of wanting Mayo, though, even if he has problems with, or can't make it through, the NCAA Clearinghouse.  Him wanting to go to K-State will only raise our school's profile in other recruits eyes and further kill that "you can't recruit top talent to Manhattan" fallacy...

I just don't want us to get &@#%ed over for signing him. I know we didn't give gifts to him but it would blow if we signed him and then later on in the season the NCAA &@#%ed us over because Mayo accepted gifts from other schools. Headlines would read "Kansas State coach Bob Huggins cheating again!!"

I don't see any way that K-State would get any sanctions with Mayo, but we may waste a scholarship on him that could have gone elsewhere.  That is the only negative that could come our way.  And he won't play until he is passed by the NCAA Clearinghouse, so they couldn't come back half way through the season with penalties or forfeitures.  And to be honest, NONE OF US know one way or the other what Mayo may or may not be involved with.  I would imagine that Huggins knows a whole lot more than us, but he still may not know the entire story...

That was the announcement, but Pitt came in out of nowhere. It was between Tennessee, IU, and KSU and then out of nowhere he committed to Pitt..

Though the source is legit, it appears he was incredibly drunk last night and he clammed up when asked about it today.  I apologize for getting some people's hopes up.  However, this was also the same state he was in when he spilled the Walker beans so he might just not want to let the cat out of the bag yet.  Fire away.  :blindfold:

If OJ received money from people unaffiliated with K-State the worst thing that could happen to us is that OJ becomes inelligible.  Most likely it would only be for part of a season (recall DarnellJackson at ku and Kareem Ruch at Mizzou).

So the questions begs: would a one-and-done player that won't be available for half of that year be orth a scholarship?

not really.  Jackson got punished by being suspended those games.  ku got their scholarships reduced partly becaue of the Jackson thing and partly for the other stuff.  the school can get in trouble, do not worry about that.

Aww, jeez--AGAIN with the O.J. drama.  Come on, does anyone realistically think he's going to wind up at KSU?  The only reason I'd be glad to have him is because he's a true PG, which we're sorely lacking.  We've got a stable full of "combo guards," but only Clent is a true PG.  Some people might throw some heat my way, but--I'm honestly not sure that having him in Manhattan for ONE YEAR would be worth the circus that would likely follow him.  I don't know--I haven't been on this forum for a long time, I'm sure you've all hashed this out dozens of times.  I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens.

The circus* that would follow him is exactly what makes him coming here worth it.

*Many, many national TV appearances, constant national media attention, a @#%$load of wins, and a ton of recruits beating down Huggins' door to be the next OJ Mayo.

clent is not only not a true PG but he is a terrible bball player.  if he never sees the court again he will have already seen it too much in his career at kstate.

As for Walker, he has not been talking to the media. Efforts to reach him have been fruitless, and North College Hill athletic director Joe Nickel said the family made it clear they don't want anything leaked.

"His mother came in and talked to us a couple of weeks ago," Nickel said. "She asked us not to say anything."
http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061029/SPT0301/610290368/1068/SPT

Walker not talking was good for KSU.  It's reasonable to assume, as others have suggested, that Mayo not talking is also good for KSU.

Is it strange that Mayo was tabbed as someone very interested in self promotion and would also intentionally fly completely under the radar for so long?

If the best case against the Mayo to KSU theory is that Mayo may not be cleared to play by the NCAA, should we really be worried that he wouldn't be playing at KSU?

Yes.  I think "outside interests" wanted him to "self promote" more than he did.
