Title: Heisman
Post by: CatDubs on November 10, 2009, 10:57:39 AM
Should Daniel Thomas be getting recognition for Heisman?  He's consistant and a reason we are winning.

According to ESPN, Alabama's RB Mark Ingram is who they believe to be leading.

Ingram has 1,148 yards with 8 TDs rushing.  216 yards recieving with 3 TDs.

Daniel Thomas has 1,087 yards with 11 TDs rushing.  246 yards recieving with 0 TDs.

This is just with who ESPN believes is leading, they mention other RBs with much less impressive stats.

I think you gotta be on a team with at least 9-10 wins to get to NYC. Hopefully this season puts him on the radar for next year which will be much more wide open of a race.

I think it is a bad idea to start hyping a player for the Heisman lest he take a big Reesing all down his leg.

Have to be on a good team with traditional name recognition

e.g. Ricky Williams

Based on stats, i think a lot of people should be getting heisman recognition that aren't, and you can say that pretty much every year. Having a player on a 4 or 5 loss team winning it will never happen

The problem with the Heisman (and most awards) is that they don't have a set standard of what the voters are looking for.  Best player on best team?  Most valuable player?  Best stats?

There isn't a clear-cut requirement for voters, so we get stuck hearing about Tebow all year.

If they gave a Heisman for worthless posts I would nominate you.  You definitely deserve the recognition.Heisman emoticon if we had one (ftp://Heisman emoticon if we had one)

This Tebow morning I got in my Tebow car and drove in a Tebow manner down Tebow Boulevard to the Tebow Store to pick up some Tebows to repair my kitchen sink with.  I asked the Tebow working there if there any Tebows in the right size and he said might have to check the catalog.  So he looks in there and says he has three Tebows in the back and they're all the wrong size for the sink so I said go ahead and order the right size Tebow and have them shipped ASAP because the wife really needs those Tebows installed before the family comes over this weekend to watch Tebow on the TV.

There isn't a clear-cut requirement for voters, so we get stuck hearing about Tebow all year.

The standards are typically tailored to whatever the player at whatever big name program is good at doing.  This ensures a recycled marketing pitch every week on ESPN, ABC, and CBS that goes something like, "watch two potential heisman candidates square off this Saturday at 2:30...", or "Tebowner continues his quest for Heisman this saturday on..." followed by  :whistle1: doo da da doo, doo da da doo, bum bum.

When the player isn't particularly good at anything (statistically speaking) they turn to the intangibles as standards or tie breakers when there isn't a tie.  Like Tebow's leadership and religious missions, or Psycho T's hustle and inability to run without falling down.

This just points out that the Heisman is no longer relevant, and is simply a popularity contest. For further proof look at 2003

If the Heisman wants to be taken seriously, Dalton of tcu and Moore from Boise should both be top 5 at this point.

Moore is having a ridiculous year, as is Case Keenum.  They're offenses are just as "system" as Tebow's so I don't see why they don't get any love.

Was hoping for Tony Pike to make a run (BCS conf QB, but Cinci is like a BCS step-child since they just joined a few years back, so thought that would be a good way to jack things up) too bad he got hurt.

Being the starting QB of a good team doesn't automatically make you a Heisman candidate.  Dalton is avg'ing 209 yards ypg, 9 ypa, and 1.8 TDpg.  On the plus side, he is completing over 60% and has only thrown 3 picks.  Not exactly Heisman type numbers, especially considering the schedule he has played.  If you're expecting an invite to NY (or even a top 5 mention) out of a mid-major conference, you better put up some ridiculous numbers.

I think I have the criteria narrowed down to get on the Hypesman short list

1. Be on a NC contending team
2. Be on an NC contending team from a major BCS conference.
3. Be on an NC contending team from a major BCS conference while playing a skill position.
4. Be on an NC contending team from a major BCS conference while playing a skill position and putting up big stat numbers.

5..can't think of another one

Stop me if I'm being ridiculous (and you can find a way to stop a post that's already been posted - LOLs), but...is there any reason we shouldn't be calling for a much more objective national player of the year award?  I mean...one that's not completely retarded like we all know the Heisman is?  I don't have any good ideas for concrete implementations, but why aren't more people saying this?  So many people care about the Heisman, but if dudes with stats as painfully mediocre as Tebow's and Ingram's are really the frontrunners for the award, there are major problems with the criteria, compadres.

Also, WTF is the deal with Gainesville, middle-of-fracking nowhere, mediocre-state-U-having, small-town Florida, attracting top-notch talent year after year?  Effing ridiculous.
