Title: My X's and O's take on what happened in norman (Please critque..if you dare)
Post by: fatty fat fat on November 03, 2009, 12:55:39 AM
OU's Mickey Mouse defenses they changed to during the week, confused KSU in the first Qtr. But after snyd's figured out what OU was doing, the game nearly turned into a disaster. Ryan Reynolds (OU MLB) was the prime example of a "duck out of water" moving him around to the SLB position and OU lined up 8 men in the box much of the game to stop the wildcat and the option attack. When OU dropped back into their normal scheme, KSU let the QB roll out and run easily at times. When OU used their nickle and dime defenses, KSU countered with running against the motion for big yards. OU's zone defense was wide open to deeper crossing routes because OU's front 4 couldn't put pressure on the moble KSU QB. OU's aggressive CB bumping and route interference, which was so good against ku and UT, wasn't used against KSU, ( afraid of Banks speed IMO). snyd's lost the coaching battle in the first Qtr and he lost the game. But, he taught stoops/venzy a lesson on adapting in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs.

PS: sndy's couldn't hide KSU's defensive woes however, especially in the passing game. KSU's pass defense wasn't any better than last years under Prince.

yeah, this. We win games if we get a good pass rush.

we haven't had a good pass rush all year long, why would we get one now?

hey, fatty, always enjoy your comments...

Doesn't our success last week highlight what, at least in theory, any defensive team might have to face when you have an offense that creates that "+1" personnel mismatch situation with a quarterback at risk to hit the edge? That is, they knew McCoy wasn't much of a risk to run, and neither was Reesing, but that Gregory was in at QB because Snyder loves the guys who can hit the edge and create a threat.

I also thought I saw a lot of, well, what I would term "less intense" play on their defense, particularly at the LB position with a lot of situations where guys were getting more or less "shielded out" without a great deal of resistance? That is, I thought I saw more than a few plays - esp when it got to 21-0 and again at 28-6, where they really seemed to lose some defensive intensity and allowed themselves to get pushed around a bit?

Sure seemed like Landry had a really good game - went something like 14-14 on that late drive...about the only thing I saw was that he probably had one or two plays where he had receivers running seam or post routes that were W-I-D-E freaking open and he just didn't spot them.....gotta be something he'll pick up with experience.

Reesing is going to pick us apart.  He didn't all of a sudden become a garbage qb overnight.

I think you are right on and our fanbase should be a little worried about the pass rush.  Pass rush is important but not the key.  As long as they don't kill us rushing we will be ok.  Reessing will run a bit but we gotta minimize it.  3rd downs will be huge.

Yeah not good at those either.

Basically if we don't get Turnovers we lose games.

You are being a bit to negative but I do agree on some parts.  We gotta tackle better this week. uk doesn't have the same athletes on offense.  Brisco and reessing worry me and that's it.

Pass defense sucks so bad because we have no consistent pass rush.

Most of this is do to the defensive play calling. I'd say we only send 5 or more guys 10% of the time, which is way to low. I've been watching this all season and we have been burnt for more big plays sending only 3 than we have blitzing. Mostly because we leave the middle of the field wide open and we don't tackle well in the open field. I'll reference two drives where this defensive strategy cost us. The OU 1 and 45, and the CU 80yrd drive with about 5 mins left. The game that we blitzed the most was the a&m game, and look what happend there, we got our sacks because we blitzed early and often.

We need to send the freaking house against uk this weekend and make blister boy run for his life and get into his head early. If not the ku wideouts will get open and we don't tackle well in the open field. Nothing would get me more pumped up this weekend than a sack on uk's first drive. I might even have to throw a  :steadymobbin':

I disagree, if we send the house against ku we will get demolished.  ku thrives on over-agressive defensive schemes.

No fear of Meier? That dude has pulled in quite a few passes as well. I am a little concerned about this game, but I think that as long as we can do SOMETHING on the defensive side of the ball - we should be OK. 1st and 45 will haunt me for a LONG LONG time.

I'd agree with you for most other teams, but what I'm trying to say is we are just as successful this year at defending the pass when we drop 5 back as when we drop 8. I'd say the reason for this is because we don't have the linebackers yet to run vic's defense, so dropping them back instead of blitzing doesn't help all that much.

OU's offensive line is better than CU's/aTm's and it seems like KSU's D doesn't like to hit/tackle.  That said, OU's offensive lines are better than ku/MU, we should get better pressure in the next three weeks than we did in Norman.
