Title: Why not now?
Post by: ChEtah on October 25, 2006, 08:33:20 PM
When I was a college sophomore, I took 21 hours in a semester.  In one of the time slots I took an 8 week class that started at the beginning of the semester.  After 8 weeks I took a final.  Then I took another 8 week class taught at the same time for the second eight weeks.  If Bill takes 12 hours of 8 week classes, I don't see why he would not be a full time student for the fall semester and be eligible right now vice the 17 Dec 2006 that everyone is talking about...  Is there a rule I am not aware of?

It really isn't a big deal if he can't play until Dec 17th. With that kind of talent, I'll gladly wait a few more weeks. :ksu:

If he is not eligible till December, does it mean that he can not practice either?  He will be that much better the earlier we have him.

Plus I want to see 10 dunks against W&M!

Seriously, you have no idea WTF you're talking about.  Zip it.  My guess is that taking 12 hours of credit in 7 weeks (not 8, right?) would be pretty damned hard, so maybe Bill needs the time that he would otherwise spend in practice hitting the books.

8 week classes would be considered quarters, and he should only have to take six hours.  Lots of schools are on the quarter system, and none of their athletes have to take 12 hours in 8 weeks.

We can't mix-match quarter/semester classes.  To take a 3 cred class in 8 weeks you have to double the time in class.  1 cred=15 contact hours regardless of 16 weeks or 8.  So, in effect, the second half courses are like a summer course.  With practice, I don't think it would be a good idea to try 12 creds if he is expecting to play next year.

Why?  What's the actual NCAA rule on this?

Getting Walker into an 8 week class not only helps him, but it helps us.  It makes sense, even if he only gets 4 hours or something, b/c then he won't have to take as many classes next semester or this summer.  At this point it seems likely that Walker will jump early, but in the least K-State needs him to get the appropriate number of hours toward his degree each semester he is here so an early departure doesn't get us into trouble with the NCAA's new APR requirements.

Plus, I'm sure a few extra weeks with Greenawalt won't hurt him and I'm also sure he'll meet with the guys now and then for a "pick-up game" somewhere. :)

The only negative of Bill Walker enrolling early and playing this year (as mentioned on GP)...

we'll only be able to claim 1 (maybe 2) Cheeseburger AAs on next year's team.

I'm willing to be honest.

Most fans of teams who never have McAAs (of even sniff them) say that they don't matter.  We all know for recruiting and prestige of a program they factor in to some extent.  You're talking most of the time about Top 30 players, and those types of players win games.  So yeah, you'll see a lot less of that response from K-State fans if Huggins manages to pull in McAAs regularly.

You can mix and match.  I did it and while on scholarship.  12 hours of cheesy freshmen classes plus practice would not be impossible either.  I originally suggested taking 12 hours only because that is what is required of a traditionional "full time student".  When I did it, I had 21 hours of credit plus 30+ hous a week practice.  My point or rather question still is, if he is a student this semester, then why is he not eligible this semester just like every other freshmen?  Someone who knows the rules needs to answer this question.  I don't care what people think he is capable of or should do, I want to know what the rules are...
