Potts
Taylor Potts was the presumed favorite last spring to replace Harrell. He's is 6'5" 235 lbs, cannon for an arm. Very unimpressive his first couple of games, and people were very concerned even in September. Goes to Texas and had a great 3 quarters. Gets nailed by Sergo Kindle on a helmet to helmet that wasn't called a penality. Many felt he suffered a concussion then, but no one (even Potts) said anything about it. Plays like crap after the hit. Next week, sucks it up against Houston. Still, many feel, feeling the affects of the Kindle hit. Following week, looked 100% lost vs. New Mexico. Took 3 brutal hits to the head, and he was done. The strange part was that he didn't even try to avoid the hits, etc. He just didn't have it. Gets a confirmed concussion, doesn't return.

Stephen "Sticks" Sheffield
Sticks comes into the New Mexico game and leads Tech to a TD on his first drive. He went 85 yards in :56 seconds. Then proceeds to lead Tech to another 4 or 5 TD's in the second half. He has a quick release, doesn't hold onto the ball, and has some mobility. Potts isn't cleared to play vs K-STATE and Sticks just shredded the Wildcat's defense. So much, that Leach, who never plays a 3rd string QB, puts in Seth Doege, (More on him later) who leads Tech to 2 garbage time TD's, passing for one of them. Sticks goes to Lincoln, and plays good enough to win by 21. No TO's, which was something that Potts had a tendency to do. (Potts is a TO machine.) However, on the final TD, a QB sneak, Sticks comes up limping. Turns out, he breaks his ankle--out indefinitely.

Texas A&M game.
Potts gets the nod, but the fan base--seeing that Sticks put points on the board, and few TO's is not too convinced. Potts leads Tech to a TD on its initial drive, aided by a busted play by A&M. On A&M's first drive, Tech defense gets a fumble. Potts can't turn it into points, throw a INT on the next drive, and now had NO CONFIDENCE. To say the offense stalled would be a insult to the 7th grade football programs in Texas. It was BAD. Leach pulls Potts mid-way thru the 3rd Quarter.

Enter Seth Doege.
Seth Doege finished the A&M game, throwing for 2 TD's. And nearly bringing the team from a 24 point deficit. (The final score was bad, but A&M got a fumble and a garbage TD.) This was his first meaningful action since his SOPH year in High School. He was highly recruited going into his JR year by the likes of OU, Florida, and others. His dad is a HS football coach, so he took a job closer to Lubbock. During summer workouts, he tore an ACL. Out for the season. A lot of schools backed off. But, he persevered, and was prepared to be the QB for this SR year. However, few schools wanted him. Tech offered. He committed (verbally). A few weeks later, he tore the other ACL. Tech kept its commitment. Rivals had him ranked as the #4 QB for his class, and the #71 overall prospect. (I think for Texas.)

Seth is a good QB. He is mobile, in that he slides in the pocket and can roll out and throw on the run. So far, he has made some good decisions, but in limited action. I'm not too concerned about his ability to make the throws. He can do that.

I hesitate a great deal to say this, but I think we'll be okay. When he came in, the players responded to him very well. He doesn't leave the WR's exposed so that DB's can light em up. He makes quick decisions, but what I like most, he checks into the run, something that Potts rarely did.

So, after our QB merry-go-round, I think this is Sticks team when he gets back. But its Doege's now.

The Jayhawks have a good shot to pull the upset imho.

What does it say . . . do not read 70 sentence team report/breakdown posts anymore.  (note this does not include "report" posts from encounters, catbacker meetings, insidery stuff etc. etc.)

Tech's Offense with a new QB is still better than ku's offense. Tech's D is better than ku's D. I'll take Tech.

ku should easily hang with Tech since they are playing with their 3rd string QB.

I like Ruffin McNeil and the Pirate to get well at uk's expense. I dont think that uk can cover the pass well enough to stop the Pirate. If Tech's O Line can hold against uk's (lol) D Line - this will be probably a 3 TD win for Tech.

I would like to see Tech put it on ku this weekend.  I just have this feeling that ku has a better shot at getting a road win than people think.  Wouldn't be surprised to see the corn lose though. Nebraska's lack of offense will keep the game close and Baylor is better coaching will help them pull it out in the end.
