Title: Nov/Dec Vacation
Post by: steve dave on October 22, 2009, 09:45:45 AM
So, planning a trip.  No idea where yet and need suggestions.  Kind of a romaticy type.  Want to go about 7-10 days total.  Will have about 175k Hilton points and about 75k Delta Skymiles to utilize if possible. Hawaii?  Only been to Oahu but loved it.  Maybe do Maui and the Big Island?  :dunno:  Europe?  Never been.  Kind of scared of not knowing any other languages :dunno:  Australia?  Seems cool, what is there to do though other than get stung by jellyfish, eaten by great whites and bitten by snakes :dunno:  Mexico/Carribean?  Kind of worried about being trapped in one area and getting bored.  We kind of get bored easy.  :dunno:  Key West/Other Keys?  Seems pretty cool.  Got to go back to the may get bored thing though.  :dunno:  NYC?  Vail/Breck/Jackson Hole?  Please post most elite vacation idea in this thread.  tia.

haven't booked anything yet, flight prices keep going down so i'm waiting as long as possible. spending about 5 days in maui, a couple on hawaii, and a day or two on oahu. i like to avoid oahu as much as possible. too many people on too small of an island. when i go to oahu (been there a couple times) i usually stay up on the north shore and do some elite surfing :gocho: (i'm actually terrible at this). will post when i know more.

also, i will have mrs. EtP take all the pics as she is an excellent photographer. you'll be very pleased.

Good to hear etp.  I also love the North Shore.  We get shaved ice like dorks and watch the surfers.  We rented a Jeep last time and drove all around up there.  I have never surfed as I am terrified of sharks.  I'll swim out a ways but always quickly swim back in when I start to think about Tiger Sharks eating my face off.  I then go to Killer Tacos and pretend that I'm a Tiger Shark eating a taco's face off.

Lots of English spoken in Europe.  Just make an effort at the other language so you don't feel like a douche.  Not sure if the shower situations will always be up to your standards, though.

Please consult with the athletic department to see if there is some recruiting or recruit enticement (legal of course) that you could do on behalf of your University's sports programs.  We used to have the Samoan connection for linemen and clearly have a Puerto Rican connection for b-ballers -- perhaps it's time we cultivate another international outlet?

I realize that you said this is a romanticy type trip, but I am sure that Mrs. SD understands the importance of EMAWnational diplomacy.  Be sure that you are wearing your  :kstatriot: pin on your suit lapel or speedo.

i vote for one of two things.

fly into miami and spend a day or two and then drive down to key west.

---or---

1)fly into montego bay and have this guy pick you up at the airport and drive you to negril.
                http://alfredstaxi.jamaicascubadivingclub.com/index.html

2)give him twenty dollars and ask him for everything that is inside of his fake can of jock itch spray located in the glove compartment.

3) go negril beach and stay here for three or four days
http://www.negrilonestop.com/seasplash_photos.shtml

4)then go to negril cliffs and stay at one of these for remainder of trip

Honestly (and I respect the sh1t out of rick daris travel advice) I have no desire to go to Jamaica.  Don't know why.  Places you linked look elite (especially the guy's car service/drug business) but I just won't do it yet.  May take the plunge at some point.  What is awesome about Miami?  What does Miami have going on?  Never been and am now interested.

fair enough. every other town/place in jamaica other than negril sucks. negril cliffs are amazing though. amazing. beach is nice/ok also.

miami is the closest point to key west which is why i recommend. if i were going to key west, i would fly into miami and drive down instead of flying directly into key west. the drive down is part of the fun imo. not that any of the other keys are cool but the drive kind of is. it also gives you the chance to experience miami. you can be all "yeah i've hung out at south beach before. bfd." also, it would divide up the trip. seven days in key west is probably too much for most folks, espcially you guys if you bore easily. you could also fly into fort lauderdale which is basically miami north. it is cheaper and more fun than miami for me but it's also very white trashy. which for me is great but maybe not for everybody. i like to go to dives and stuff on vaca. just got back from palm beach/fort lauderdale. hate palm beach. love ft lauderdale. palm beach is basically kc country club place located a mile from the beach with nice homes and no places to actually hang out at on the beach. lameo.

other than that you could prob go to mexico somewhere or costa rica. pretty sure they have an elite hilton place there. stay at the hilton for a few days then go into the rainforest and spelunk n zip line n stuff.

Puerto Vallarta is my fav place in the world probably, been several times.  Lots to do, food/activities are elite of elite.  Only like a 4/5 hour flight.

Jungle, hiking, horseback riding etc.  Whales come through in The winter time.

there's a 25% chance i'll be in wichita too at that time.

went to pv this summer. it's pretty cool. pv is fun for a lot of people because it's not just all brand new 20 story wyndhams with no surrounding culture. it was actually a city before it became a tourist attraction so you have a ton of shops, art, small diner/restaurant type places and not just jimmy buffets margaritaville. from what i've heard, it's also quite a bit cheaper then cabo.

steve dave-

that place was around $130 per night for two people all inclusive when we went this summer. we read some pretty questionable stuff about it on trip advisor though and decided to go to a place called dreams instead. i'm sure it would be fantastic but for just a little more we got a place that seemed a little more of a sure thing. there were even a few all inclusives on the beach for around or even less then $100 but just seemed to cheap to be good.

where'd you get that quote? my advice would be to go to sidestep.com and check puerto vallarta for the same dates and then sort by price and see what all comes up. you might be surprised if you haven't done this. do it.

it really depends on what you're after- they're two completely different places.  i made the assumption that since you were planning a cabo trip that you were wanting to drink tequila with white people and pretend you're in mexico.  if you really want to check out mexico a little and see the people and the non-developed places, along with some nice touristy places as well, then pv is the definite answer.

there's a lot of towns around pv that are sweet for just checking things out.  it's a cool place, mexico.

yeah. cabo sounds like stuff i would not like from what i've heard. always fun to go where most people don't go, etc. when going on vacation. went to padre a few times in college and did the matamoras thing. we would cross the border and then immediately get cabs and go into town and then really venture out. some of the best times.

Lighten up, fellas.  That sh*t was f*cking funny.  I appreciate the tips.  The only reason I was looking at Cabo was that it seemed like better scenery with those rock formations or whatever that jut out into the ocean.  I kinda got the impression that it sucks, but I don't really trust online reviews too much.

if you come to europe, lmkw and we can katpak.

You going to be there Nov/Dec 2010?  Because, I would totally hit you up on that and make you be our tour guide/translator guy.  This would solve some of my "scared because I dont' speak the language" problems.

till mid dec.

What part? Spain? PM if the part you are in is too elite for general consumption.  tia.

Another Plus about PV, is that it costs 5 dollars for a cab ride anywhere you want to go, at least several years ago the highest rates were 5 bucks.  Or you can spend a day and figure out the old town bus system and get around for like a penny.

I've heard that Cabo is Crazy Windy.
