Title: 3 games, 3 goalline failures....
Post by: ksu_FAN on October 23, 2006, 12:55:11 PM
As I looked at the 3 recent failures, the 1st two caught me off guard.

Against OSU we did run a roll out to Raymer on 3rd down and he got tackled short.  The other 3 plays inside the 10 were rushes.

Against NU we threw it twice, once on 1st down to Norwood and on 4th down to Nelson.  The other 2 plays were runs.

We threw it there more than I thoughted, it just didn't work.  That's not a bad mix actually.

I suppose that makes MU more baffling.  7 plays inside the 10, 7 rushes.  Now, I'd have to watch the tape, but I'm sure there were a couple different types of running plays there, but it is surprising we didn't try to throw it at least once in that mix.

Against OSU and NU, again 3 passes and 5 runs isn't a bad mix, we just didn't get it done.  Obviously the staff thought we could get the yardage on the ground and/or thought that we couldn't pass (weather?) in that situation after our failures the previous weeks.  In any case, we didn't get it done (2 false starts didn't help) and that leaves Prince open to 2nd guessing from guys like me.

Hopefully we get into the same situation this week (1st and goal) and find a way to get the ball into the endzone.  I'd like to see this group meet this challenge several times before this season is over.

We did have goalline success against OSU.

Was it the fullback's fault ?

Yes, Rusty, we did punch one in later.  We also scored a 1st and goal opportunity against MU later, we just need more of them to be successful.

ksu_Fan,

As much as I'd like to fault the O-Coordinators for the Rayer failure that was all on him.  Go back and watch the film and you'll see that instead of making the catch and turning up field for the touchdown he actually turns left (against his body) and was met by a CB or FS.  No way a Dback should be able to bring a TE like that but as soon as Rayer turns the wrong way he loses his leverage and center of gravity.
