Title: Asprilla
Post by: Jeffrey_Martin on October 15, 2009, 12:01:12 PM
Art Alvarez just texted me to alert me that he and Freddy A. will be in Manhattan this weekend. He said to let him know if I needed anything, etc. That's how me and Art roll...

Seriously, though, I told him my current situation but that I still do some K-State related stuff, i.e. - post here. I will call him Sunday - after the Bengals/Texans, of course - and ask him WHATEVER YOU WANT. I'm dead serious about this, but I'm going to keep the cap at 10 questions. So, whatever you have to do to pare the list down to 10, do so. Work together, debate, whatever - but I'll ask your questions because, really, I have none. But I do have access.  :)

edit, are you going to talk to Freddy or Art?

Oh, and ask him how much does Frank love K-State and if he gets an offer from a Big East school after this season, in his honest opinion, would he take it? :ohno:

1.  Art has said in the past that Freddy may commit as soon as he has a visit to a school that "fits," and forgo other visits.  Did KSU "fit?"

2.  Art has said in the past that Freddy may leap directly from Juco to "the pro's."  In Art's opinion, is that exclusively for the NBA, or is Freddy in a position financially/life-goal wise where ANY "professional" opportunity is favorable versus one more year in school?   Ask Art, "Gun to your head, what do you predict Freddy will do...go pro in 2010 or play D1A basketball?"

Jeff,

Thanks for the doing a job for free that others are unwilling or incapable of doing for pay.

God bless you and your charitable hand outs.  You're like a soup kitchen for K-State basketball recruiting information.

Be sure to ask Art how he enjoyed his jet service flight on American Airlines with direct connection to Manhattan from Dallas.

JM: "Freddy/Art, what do you think Freddy's style of play will bring the Wildcats something down low that they don't already have?"

edit, are you going to talk to Freddy or Art?

ART: Here's what he does best - Freddy is a 4,5, but he is so... so skilled. What I mean is his best ability is passing the ball, like Bill Walton. Can face up, play with his back to the basket... He could have gone to the draft. He's a guy who can play with his back to basket, face up, hands so strong... To me, and I was talking to Frank about this, he probably has the best hands and foot coordination of anything big around. He could play 12-15 feet away from the basketball... He's a guy who gets after it. His motor is always running. You can't cover him in the paint... You can't cover him. In the Sun Belt, they sent three guys at him. But he passes so well... His skill level at that height is off the charts.

ART: Angel Rodriguez is a kid Frank has already offered. We placed him at Krop... Angel Rodriguez is a kid that Frank saw this summer and offered him on the spot. He's like J.J. Barea - he's a clone of Barea. A scoring point, tremendous off the dribble, can really shoot it. He hasn't been exposed, only played in a couple of tournaments. I know Miami, K-State, Florida State... Pretty much local schools. Only going to be a junior, two years left. When he gets exposed, everyone is going to be all over him. He's a high-major point, maybe replace Denis down the road. He's the real deal.

ART: He's going to continue to recruit down here. From our organization, we were talking about this... Frank is recruiting New York real hard right now. Angel is a guy he really wants, and right now, I don't see anyone else he's really going after.

also, ask him if he were in charge of the NCAA, what measures would he take to make sure that what happened to Freddy at FIU, being denied a release, doesn't happen to other players in the future.

ART: It's very unfair. The athletic director and Isiah... AD told me it wasn't going to happen under his watch... Scholarships taken away from kids already, and how unfair was that? Wouldn't let Freddy go, though? Put the kid behind the 8-ball... Now he has to play JUCO or go JUCO, and only have two to play... This thing is a double standard. Really unfair what happened... It makes the kid step backwards.

He'll play Division I basketball. I've talked to general managers and scouts and they know he's a pro. It will have to be examined every year. There aren't a lot of skilled bigs. Not many 6-10, 275-pound skilled kids, and there aren't many of those in the country and a shortage in the NBA... But it's a year-to-year thing. By no stretch am I saying he's a NBA player right now, but the NBA drafts upside, and this is a kid who has tremendous upside.
Title: Re: Asprilla
Post by: Jeffrey_Martin on October 19, 2009, 11:21:53 AM
ME: Who does he compare to?

ART: Of any bigs right now, Freddy is very unique. Not many people that big, that wide, that dominating with his skill level, and that's why Frank likes him so much. I don't see many other people like that. I don't know of anyone I can compare him to... Nobody has his skill package... He's a powerful four, like Beasley and the kid at Oklahoma (Blake Griffin). He's a powerful 280-pounder who will sit on the block and you can't move him. Skilled, but can move. Great hands, huge hands.

OU's offense is suspect with Landry Jones. Not moving the ball well - everybody has been doing that against ku, and the Sooners struggled. If Gregory doesn't morph into Reesing, if the Wildcats don't give the ball away, and if they can get some points from special teams, K-State has an excellent shot.

j-mart, how bad are we gonna smash ou.

JMart is the perfect mix of "yes-man" and "truth-teller."

Asprilla will end up at Memphis or OU.  He would already be on board w/ the EMAW were he joining us IMO.

it was discussed quite a bit over here... http://www.ksufans.com/forums/index.php?topic=41799.60

everyone pretty much just decided on "spri" btw. doubt we need to have some big debate about his nick all over again fwiw. relevant convo below.

feel good about spri coming.

btw- spri is what we are calling him. not sasparilla, not fdog, not asprilla the giant, not weird freak humanoid with abnormally large head and sausages for fingers. just spri. just so we're all in agreement here. thanks.

did u give any consideration to nickname "rilla"? He could be called Asparilla the Thrilla and then we could have a Thriller night at the OOD.

What about Asparilla the Gorilla?  Not racist because he's Columbian.  :dunno:

did you two clowns even think about what it will be like in ood when the ball goes in to spri and everyone expects some massive dunk but then he's all "no, no, no" w/ the finger wag and then takes the ball to 3 pt. and bombs w/ nothing but swish and the crowd goes crazy and the announcer guy is "spriiiiiii for threeeeeee"!

no. no, i guess you two didn't think about that did you? maybe use your heads next time. maybe take the heads out. jeepers here guys.

Seriously though, can you imagine Colon averaging 13.7 and 9.2 as a FR, even in the Sun Belt.  Or being Sun Belt FOTY.

I don't think so.

If he had better hands.  Sheer size domination, doesn't have to be good at much else except catching the ball if he's big enough.

maybe i'm underestimating the sun belt.

If he ends up not coming to Kstate then he simply made a complete turnaround about this decision in about two weeks.

It could very well happen but he left everyone here thinking it was a done deal.

I also feel like he is not sold on KSU yet.  I think he would have pulled the trigger with a verbal if he was.

Also, he notes that Lu and Denis are both big positives for KSU in getting Asprilla.  However, they are both gone next year.

I hope he comes, but feel some pessimism boiling up.
