From KC Biz journal (http://kansascity.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2009/10/05/daily33.html?ed=2009-10-07&ana=e_du_pub#):
Congressional negotiators have agreed on a fiscal 2010 appropriation of $32 million for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, the Kansas congressional delegation said Wednesday.
The agreement is in a conference report that the House and Senate still must approve.
Earlier this year, supporters of the facility had worried that no money would be appropriated for NBAF next year.
Fiscal 2010 financing for NBAF would be in addition to $82 million appropriated in the past four years for the laboratory, according to the Kansas Bioscience Authority.
NBAF, which will be built at Kansas State University, will serve as a research center for combating agriculture’s vulnerability to naturally occurring diseases or agro-terrorism.
Facility design is under way, with the start of construction planned for 2010. NBAF is expected to be fully operational by 2015.

hopefully it's not just fluff. i asked the "kansas department of transportation" head how the flights were doing. she had no idea. i totally stunned her w/the question. (she was giving a speech on the "real-world" for our seminar class. she just expected to give the speech and bail, but I caught her and asked the question. nothing. so incredibly lame)
damn, i good use a nice airplane/airport vacation right about now. :-[

there are a bunch of people that still don't know it's there. former emaws who live out of state and stuff. crap, half of manhattan doesn't even know it's there. it will take a while to educate and break habits. like fff said, nbaf opening is a long way away but they'll have to fly people in during the building process, etc. plus ft riley is still in the process of getting bigger. that should help too.
i think there is basically a two year commitment right now. as long as the nbaf thing follows through i bet it stays.

I hope it stays. Nothing better than driving on k-18 and seeing an :AA: plane taking off....

I'm sure you'd rather hear "NBAF construction to begin tomorrow!!!!", but in reality, projects of this magnitude take time. The fact that actual $$$ is being appropriated is good news. I've seen thousands of projects die from lack of funding. It's good to see the money being alloted.
Also, as this thing gets out of the early development stages and into actual design, I'd expect :AA: traffic to pick up considerably. If I get any better insidery type info, I'll let you know.

So like how long until we're the biggest and bestest metro area in the state?
