Not a shock.  He's had a handfun of articles in SI recently.  Add him to the growing list of Star writers who go on to national publications.  Jeff Passan being the one I can think of.

I've not been a fan of his, but it doesn't overly surprise me that another mid-western writer makes the bigs.  There are a lot of good journalists out there, particularly on the left and right coasts -- but to make it in those markets, it's all about the "shock and awe" -- and that sometimes gets in the way of integrity.
