Title: Power and Light District
Post by: WillieWannabe on July 24, 2009, 09:25:16 AM
Headin' to the P&L District tonight, never been there before. Anyone ever been there? Know any good bars? Any tips or places to watch out for? TIA

1. The place will be a zoo.  Wall to wall people.  Elbows and a-holes.  Enjoy that.
2. First timers enjoy hanging outside in the KC Live area.  Soak it all in.
3. Every bar is going to be packed.  I'll try to break them down for you.
   a. McFadden's: Power drinkers.  Younger crowd.  Loud.  PACKED
   b. Mosaic:  Snobby coke hoes and d-bag haven.  Small.
   c. Irish place: Stinks like fish.  Midget doing riverdance there when I went
   d. Shark Bar:  Probably my favorite.  Bikinis, d-bag factor is less than Mosaic
   e. Maker's Mark:  More laid back adn relaxing atmosphere.  2nd fav
   f.  Vivino: Gay
   g. PBR:  Country bar with power drinking redneck assholes and mech. bull
   h. Rock Bar:  Non conformists, tattoos, people who think they are badass
    i. Howl at the Moon:  Like this place too.  Piano bar.  Decent crowd
   k. Tengo Sed Cantina:  Gets pretty wild. Small. Packed in crowd. Sluts

If you like big crowds and a crazy atmosphere to people watch in you'll like it.

Also keep in mind, cover charge for all those places except the irish bar and mcfadden's.  Stay in the "living room" (center area), get a couch, do some people watching, get beers there, and take a piss inside McFadden's...also watch out for the "sink helpers" make sure you pay your dollar to take a piss....meh.

Sounds like I will be bringing alot of money. We are actually taking our buddy down for a bachelor party, so we might not be at the bars that long.

I appreciate the info on all the bars...good stuff. This is why i love ksufans.com. We need an emoticon for that.

I think I may have paid a cover at PBR once when they were having a band.  I've never paid a cover to get in anywhere else.  Drinks are expensive though for sure.

I guess you could say we are more the "country" crowd. Mainly beer drinkers, no frilly girly stuff or anything.

go to harry's country club in the river market.  Not P&L, but it's better (JUST IMO!).  Less crowded.  But you and your pals may like ogling at hookers?

Sink Helpers  :dunno: :dunno:

I'm assume this means bathroom attendants.  You know, the guys who stand by the sinks and hand you paper towels.  Sometimes they have a silver tray with gum and condoms.  (BTW, I think this could easily go in the "worst jobs" thread if anyone on here has ever done this.)
Title: Re: Power and Light District
Post by: dr00d on July 24, 2009, 01:29:26 PM
Yes, bathroom attendants would be the proper job title.  Personally, I think it's pretty creepy.

The last thing I want is a guy sitting right outside the stall while I explode on a toilet.  Damn mexican food!

BTW, there is a strip joint right south of P/L on Grand if you were looking for that as well.  :beerchug:

Howl at the Moon is pretty much cover everyday if there are people playing the pianos.  Otherwise all the other joints (Shark Bar?) I said have cover after 9 on the weekends in the P/L.  Shark Bar being the only bar I haven't tried to get into, so I'm not for sure on that one.  If piss were here, he could tell you everything...it's a glorified frat pack club once you get inside.

Make sure you check the attire too.  No baseball caps allowed to be worn in certain places, no team stuff either (kstate/ku/mu/yankees/whatever team) or HOODIES!  :ku:

They basically want you to wear a button down shirt and khakis w/ your doc martens.  (I'm not making this up, either)

I heard something about a dress code...hmm...is that at all bars...or just the "preppy" ones?

The dress code is for the entire P&L.  Just don't wear holey jeans and don't show up looking like a scumbag and you'll be fine.  Unless you're black. If you're black wear a collared shirt with some khakis some casual slipons and a belt.  no hat.  That might work... probably be best to be with some white people.

I'm not black  :peek: Sounds rough...

I'll keep that in mind. Try to keep it as low key as possible.

Already been said but just to add agreement, it's gonna be packed full of people.  Drinks are expensive as hell.  The dress code is only an issue if you show up looking like you're ready to play ball at the rec. Also, soccer jerseys aren't allowed either.  Every bar has the ability to have it's own cover charge.  Personally, I have more fun just drinking in the main area rather than pay a cover to go into an even more crowded bar.

I've been there twice. First time it was pretty packed - normal Saturday I guess. Second time was Mardi Gras. Holy crap it was packed.

Advice: Do not leave a bar if there are lines to get in. You will waste about 45 minutes standing in line when you could be drinking.

should just go to the strip club early, grab good seats, stay there must the night then go to westport later when you are too drunk to care about your surroundings.

I was dressed in a nice shirt and jeans a few months ago and tried to get into just the main part outside.  The guy told me my jeans were too low (showing 1 inch of boxer when i lifted my shirt) so I said sorry how high do you want them?  He said it doesn't matter, they have a first impression rule and that I was done for the night.  I am white, not a wigger, looked like any other normal person.

I freaked out on him because I was drunk and they called the cops so I ran away, changed shirts with someone, and then snuck in another bar.  When I left, I walked by the guy who wouldn't let me in with my jeans halfway down my thigh.  He wasn't amused.

P&L is cool once every 3 or 4 months.

Otherwise plaza or westport please.

Same thing happened to my friend. He got denied because his shorts were too baggy. He's white, non wigger.

Well i am currently in the motel after the night at the P&L D. Your descriptions were pretty accurate. Didn't get haseled about clothes. Even had a couple guys in jean short and white tee, with a cap, no issues. Were at McFaddens and PBR most of the night. I was amazed at the ratio of women there compared to Manhattan. If it wasn't so expensive, I would hit it more often.

Also, hit the strip club Temptations down the road. Not my choice, but it worked. The experienced clubbers said it was horrible, but i enjoyed since it was pretty much my first time. A little too much of a "ethnic" crowd for my taste, but a good time. Some good talent there, not great.
