Statue of Liberty just opened up its crown.  South beach is a good night life spot.  If the weather is good, hit the esplanade for a walk along the Charles river.

Walking around downtown is pretty neat I guess..the .architecture down there is pretty cool, if you're into that stuff.

The aquarium is nice too.

Probably my favorite part of visiting chicago, though I didn't see a whole lot. Went to a Cubs game (sucked), worth a stop if you're into baseball and haven't been to Wrigley before. Definitely get a deep dish pizza somewhere.

where are you staying, waks?  (just curious about lolapalooza accom's)

As for things to do, you can probably find something world-class or close to it in whatever it is you're interested in.  It can be overwhelming to try to narrow it down.

And after you see Tool instead of those other losers

Go here: http://www.billygoattavern.com/home.html

That famous SNL skit is based off this burger place. The one where they order a cheeseburger and the cooks are like "Cheeseburger cheeseburger cheeseburger". Then order fries and they will say "NO FIRES, CHIPS!"

Just like the skit. And mind you they say it in a crazy ass accent it's an experience.

Depeche Mode, Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg and Jane's Addiction are all more successful than tool. Take away the near-decade that Tool existed and nobody knew about them and a few more bands would likely move ahead of them as well.

I'm staying at a friend's apartment that goes to University of Chicago so I don't have much idea for the accom's. They don't offer camping (for obvious reasons), which kind of blows.

Ok lol. Tool has been around almost 2 decades now. Snoop Dog is maybe the only other "artist" more successful that Tool. GMAFB with Depeche Mode and Lou Reed. And Jane's Addiction?

Depeche Mode has been around since 1980 and are far more influential than Tool. Lou Reed has been around since the '70's as a solo artist and was an original member of The Velvet Underground. And Jane's Addiction has been around since '85 and was one of the first successful Alt-rock bands. I'm sorry if none of these artists are heavy enough for you but you should at least be aware of the artists you're talking about.

Doubt it.

Plus, I realize all the above has been around for some time. And it's not that they're not heavy enough, that has nothing to do with it. Tool isn't even a "heavy metal" band as they are commonly misperceived. Just saying, I guarantee they will put on a better show than anyone at lollapalooza...even though Tool is better in indoor venues just because of the lights and lasers and crazy crap they do.

But anyway, we'll agree to disagree.

What do you mean you doubt it? They were formed in '77, their first studio album was '81.

How good of a show they put on is completely subjective. It totally depends on the opinion of the viewer, there's no unbiased way to measure it. However, there is an unbiased way to measure the success of a band. And as I proved to you, your original statement that Tool is the most successful band playing Lollapalooza is untrue.

Thanks Fatty. The Killers are playing Lolla. It will be hard to not think of "The greatest turnaround in college football history" video during their set.

Go downtown and let a homeless guy wash your shoes. Then, walk away without paying him and tell him you are against paying homeless people.  You will feel better about your place in social society and walk away with some squeaky clean sneakers.

Um... You'll probably want to check out Millennium Park, just north of Grant Park, where they have the bean. They have an art museum that's just north of that that's cool if you're into art. The Magnificent Mile is a shopping district just north of that. Gino's East is just off of that, and they have Chicago-style pizza. Wrigley Field and Wrigleyville are worth going to. If you take the red line north and get off at the Addison stop, there's a lot of stuff around there to check out.

A lot of the stuff closes down pretty early downtown, but when the concerts get out, there are a lot of nearby Subways that'll be open and you can get $5 footlongs. During Lollapalooza, there is usually a stand at the north side of Grant Park that you can get a big tray of chicken strips for $5, by far the best deal there.

I went to Lollapalooza the last three years, so if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

The first year, we stayed at some hotel by O'Hare. The second year, and the best deal, we stayed at HI-Chicago, a hostel about as close as it gets to the Lollapalooza entrance for $30/night. Everyone else in our room was there for the same thing. And last year, I stayed at some hotel with a friend for free.  :shy:

Forgot to mention:

Coolest thing I've seen in my life: I was at the top of the Sears tower just as a thunderstorm was blowing in. It was kinda scary, but unbelievable at the same time. The best part was looking down and seeing lightening below where I was standing.

As a fat guy who briefly lived in Chicago one time, I would recommend the following:

1.  Chicago style pizza
2.  Go to Greektown, and get some greek food.  A gyro is great.
3.  Walk around downtown and look at the tall buildings.  (only if you are from a small town in Kansas and are impressed by tall buildings)

Go in late December or early January.  You can get a suite for $100-$120 including parking which is normally $30-$40.  I like Homewood Suites because it's less than a block from the subway.

Sorry.  Just trying to answer in order to help with the :Rusty: in this thread.  And failing.

So, waks, I'm not sure there are any can't misses in Chicago, but there are many, many awesome things.  People there might have an opinion on pizza places.  You could always ask around and find out.

The Chicago Dog.

Here are a couple of food places I would recommend.  For pizza, you might try Lou Malnati's.  There are a bunch of pizza places but I like this one the best for deep dish.  The River North location (if you're downtown, it's the closest) is on about the 400 block of Wells street.  There are other locations that I am sure you can find on the web.   For good fast food, find a Portillo's.  You have tons of choices.  The downtown location is at about the 100 block of West Ontario.  If you want to be ridiculed by out-of-work or part-time actors go to Ed Debevic's.  It's a pretty fun place on Ontario (I think).  If you want to see the place that Saturday Night Live made famous, go to lower Michigan Ave (near the Tribune building by the river, under the Mag Mile, you take stairs down to the lower sets of roads – it's cool just to go down there and see the underside of the city) and try out the Billy Goat Tavern.

Speaking of Ontario, if you want to do touristy stuff, you can go to about Clark and Ontario (I think) and there are all the places every city has, Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, etc.  You might also head over to the museum campus.  The Science and Industry Museum (south of the campus quite a ways) and the Field Museum are great places if you like that stuff.  The Shedd aquarium is right there, the Art Museum (a little north of the campus), etc.  There is a good ancient history museum that most people don't know about, the Oriental Institute near the U. of C.  This is on the near south side close to the Museum of Science and Industry.

For other music, the Blues are a Chicago favorite.  You could check out Kingston Mines (about the 24-2500 block of N. Halstead), Buddy Guy's Legends (somewhere on Wabash, maybe the 500-800 block south), or the House of Blues (it's the most touristy of these three but has some cool stuff to see) on N. Dearborn somewhere (500 block?).

I'm leaving for Denver this morning and won't be on the board for awhile.  I hope this helps.  Have a great time in Chicago.

just asking because I want to go sometime and hotels are expensive in DTCHI.  I might just stick w/ old bonaroo.  maybe the DAVE FAMILY WILL JOIN ME NEXT TIME.

We could probably actually pull off Loll. a lot easier than bonaroo bro.  I kinda need to shower every 24 hours.  I am a little b1tch in this regard.   :ksu:
