I say at least 2000.  But, at some point in there, the numbers will be very low.  Like The Stand.

Good question.

But first, do you count the following:

1. Chuds
2. Androids
3. Aliens with human level intelligence or better

my original question was just thinking about just earth humans.

I'm gonna go with about 800 years.

my guess is something that we don't know about yet.  somebody will prob discover or create something in the next 300 years or so and then it all goes pretty quickly from there. no clue what it will be.

What about other animals?  Will we outlive animals that are stupid and eat poorly or if we go, does that mean that something really dicked up happened and the whole earth is gone?

Nuclear fission. The clock is ticking...

Possible reasons for our demise-

Nuclear war (wouldn't likely kill everyone)
Massive natural cataclysmic event (Yellowstone volcano erupting. would eventually kill everyone)
Zombie outbreak (would be excellent way to go, but I think would be controllable)
Alien/alternate reality convergence (think The Mist mixed with Independence Day)
Meteor (most likely. Won't see it coming and will destroy us)

What about the LHC?  That thing is going to start pretty soon, no?  BTW, thanks to the d00ds who keep sabotaging it.

Isn't our solar system supposed to be boofed by the Milky Way or something on December 21st, 2012?

I'm throwing that in with the alternate universe convergence.

I think this is what will happen within the next 100 years.  That damn thing is due.

Interesting topic here.  Lots of factors.  For instance, what do you mean by "humans"?  Some scientists think that an event known as "singularity" will happen within the next 100 years, after which point, the natural events that would cause traditional humans to perish may not have the same affect on whatever it is that we are after singularity has been achieved.  If you had asked this question back in the 80's, people probably would have speculated that humans would fall victim to massive HIV outbreaks but the disease is being curtailed quite successfully here in the states due to aggressive drug regiments (PEPs and PrEPs) and sero-sorting.  I personally believe that our species will adapt quite successfully back to a world without oil and eventually the strife caused by overpopulation will kill off enough people to curb starvation.  What I think is really going to get us is that sometime between 3000 and 4000, earth's magnetic field will dissipate enough on its way toward reversal of the poles (where it might even stop for a while), rendering us vulnerable to the solar winds (which will cook and ionize our asses  :lick:).

Love thinking about this stuff...This website provides a ton of scenarios on how we will go.

My favorite? Technological Singularity baby.

Meteor
Pole reversal
Solar Flare

that's if we don't do it ourselves via biologicals

seems weird that most people think it's gonna be a natural disaster or solar flare or asteroid or something. humans have been around for like a kabillion years (approx) and none of those things have got us yet. kinda weird that a lot of folks think one of em will get us in the next 200 years. dunno though, maybe not.

i think it will be something man made or discovered or whatever.

I don't get the low figures based on these things.  I mean, we've made it this long facing all of them and suddenly we are down to the final seconds (relatively) of our existance?  meh...

I guessed the same possible events, yet went with 2-5000 years for this reason. Nuclear weapons would be the only reason I would guess a shorter time. That's really the only major change in the past 200,000 years.

Kinda off topic, has anyone seen the movie with Luke Wilson?  Can't remember what it's called but it's really stupid.  The theory is that with all the stupid people having lots of babies and the smarter/ more logical people having only 1 or sometimes none that the worlds populaiton is getting dumber every generation.

but nuclear weapons occured in the last hundred years right? pretty short time period there.

you don't think something more powerful/easier to make/secure the ingredients for will be discovered in the next hundred years?

i bet nuclear weapons will be looked at like cannons are now if we're still here in two hundred years. people will probably collect them and keep them in their foyers and lol at the fact that they used to be considered massive and scary and stuff.

This is kind of my theory on why we will never meet any aliens.  Every intelligent being eventually becomes able to easily destroy all of itself.  By the time you reach the technological stage where you would be able to travel into deep space and live forever you have already become able to completely destroy your whole society and, inevitably, someone will (maybe even by accident -> LHC!)

I don't see us going towards a total destruction weapon in the future. My bet is money will be invested in stuff like unmanned drones and stuff to patrol like that. I'm seeing countries that would rather control than destroy.

Timeline, they are repetitive and due.

Yellowstone magma dome is rising and due based on previous eruptions.
Polar magnetic shift is due.
Solar flares happen all the time, a big is quite possible at any time.
The big ole meteor is out there and heading our way, its a matter of when.

Granted these have a +- of a few thousand years, I just like to think humans are about to be extincted, I don't like them.
