So, apparently you can pre-order starting tommorow and, if you do in time, you can upgrade from Vista/XP to Home Premium 7 for $49.99.  I have had no issues with Vista but everyone seems to talk about 7 like it's amazing or whatever.  Thoughts?  Worth it?  I think it's like $119 retail if you don't pre order and they have a pretty strict quantity of pre-orders.  Everyone using 7:  What kind of differences are there?

From Vista? Not a ton. Vista got a bad rap but 7 will be awesome because users are stupid and really don't know the difference.

I have 7 loaded on my machine at home...I'll probably pick up a copy if it's going to be cheaper.

Less agressive superfetch, IMO (not everyone agrees) a better taskbar.  On slower machines its much faster than Vista, but on computers like mine (f*cking fast) any OS is really fast.

You can download the release candidate and install it and use it until like March 2010 or so (free)

I'll probably wait till I can get the final version on MSDN.

Its built on the Vista kernel though.  Vista got a very undeserved bad wrap, but its reputation is hard to shake.

Oh yeah, my machine is like some sort of super computer.  It's all ZOOM! RAWR! no matter what.  Probably way faster than yours from the sounds of things.

Yeah, I'll prolly do it.  Question though, if I just pirate it will they be able to tell or will I be stopped from getting service packs or whatever?

Pirating OS's is tricky business. If you want it for free, find someone with an MSDA or a Technet sub.

Just subscriptions IT guys get. Also, some students have access to MSDNAA which is for students. I know the colleges of engineering and business have good subscriptions. You may bum a serial number off them.

I put Win7 on my new built computer a few weeks ago.  So far, not impressed.

Have had several issues that I hadn't seen in the past.

On first boot it locked up when I tried to cancel a download because I had forgot that I was using 64-bit and wanted to look for a 64 bit version first.  I had to hard boot and when that came back up UAC was in full batcrap mode.  Didn't let me do anything.  Had to make my way to group policies to shut off the service, then reboot and turn that crap off.  pain and not a very good start.

I've also had other various issues like sound and another lock up using firefox. 

I'm not hear to say the OS is crap, I'm just giving my perspective of things so that nobody goes in thinking that it is a perfect OS like the mac is.... :banghead:

Did you do a fresh install or an upgrade? Was this the RC or Beta? And did you use the newest drivers for your system from the manufacturer (not windows update?)?

Pirating OS's isn't tricky.  It is likely about eventually they will find your copy isn't legit, but your only punishment is you can't use windows update.

Microsoft really doesn't go bat sh*t crazy like the RIAA/MPAA over piracy, because they would rather you pirate their software than buy the competitor's. (That is straight from Balmer's mouth)

Not only is your last statement funny, UAC is much less restrictive than in Vista and you don't go into group policies to disable UAC.  Not to mention, only the Vista bashers hate on UAC.  OSX/Linux both offer their own set of annoyances.

Other than video card drivers, there is no need to go anywhere else but Windows Update for them (unless it can't find drivers).  Windows 7 is much much better about native support than Vista or XP. (Vista was much better than XP in this respect)

You are right, UAC was much less restrictive, UNTIL my sh1t locked up, I rebooted and it went into psycho lockdown mode.  I tried about everything, msconfig, etc but nothing worked but group policy disable.

You should already know I'm not a MAC guy so it isn't like I'm on here just to bash for the sake of bashing.  I am also aware of the linux lockdown as well...but at least it's fairly easy just to change over to root once and do whatever you'd like.  I had a lot of problems getting Win7 off the ground.  That is all.

I hardly used vista and would of skipped it altogether if I could have but it was installed on my new laptop about a year ago.

As for drivers, I had to mess around with a few drivers because I have a fairly new board and couldn't find anything to support 64 bit.  For the most part it isn't a bad OS but it does have some annoyances I am still trying to change, like the new task bar crap.  It hides my google mail icon (and all others) right now so I don't know when I get new mail or when I should be notified of anything else.

Also had stacked applications, like steam...I have to click the steam icon, then choose my chat window...meh.  Like I said, all customization.

No you have to download a crack to disable the activation check and sh*t.

Better off just torrenting a copy at that point
