Title: softball
Post by: Rick Daris on June 16, 2009, 03:40:05 PM
anybody play? i'm playing for the first time in like ten years and i gotta say, it's pretty fun. couple of quick hitters here. feel free to add your own.

1) that lemmy guy plays for the gopowercat team. i saw him hit the ball the other day but didn't see him molest anyone or anything. i'll keep my eyes open though.

2) what's a better feeling? getting a great hit or making a great defensive play? i've gotta go w/ defense here. i made a diving catch the other day and it was amazing. smiled for like an hour straight.

3) fitz goes out and watches the gopowercat team but doesn't play. gmafb right? what kinda guy goes out to watch softball but not participate. don't understand this. also, he's worn the same outfit two weeks in a row. blue cargo shorts w/ these horrible sandals and a light colored tshirt.

Great report.  Congrats on the diving catch.  Agreed on defense being better.

Anybody that play softball play pitcher? If so, what goes through your mind after you let it fly? Does the fact that the ball may come right back at you at 100 mph go through your head?

:dunno:

I got hit right in the middle of the Shin when I was pitching once.  Thought my leg was broken at first.  Ball ricochet'd(?) out of play.

Yes.  Luckily for me I'm like a gazelle.  Saw a pitcher take a line drive to the nutz once though... :barf:

One dude at third base the other night took either a line drive or a sharp one hopper to the knee cap. I would have thought that the guy would be in pain, but just shook it off. He must have been on some morphine.

***true story alert***

i used to pitch years ago. had a guy hit the ball as hard as humanly possible right at my face once. caught it. don't have the slightest idea how. it knocked me over. everyone watching gave me a standing O' . i probably would be dead if that thing would've hit me. i don't pitch anymore.  :ohno:

Now tell us cas, truly how hard is it to call the pitches?

During the Bat Cats season should we lay off of the umps just a little bit?

Well, with slow pitch it is as hard as you want to make it. For me as long as it is over the plate doesn't bounce on the plate or is way up, and by way up I mean above your chin, it is a strike. The one thing I hate more than anything is when people go up there looking to walk. It's slow pitch softball GMAFB. Usually not a problem with men's league but with co-ed it gets redic. with women that are like 5'4 to begin with going up there squatting as low as humanly possible. Then they bitch and complain. cas =  :blank: :jerkoff:

Now when it comes to actual baseball, it isn't as tough as one might think. When I umpire the biggest thing to be aware of is where the ball breaks at. Sure the kids that I umpire for are only throwing 50-60 mph, but if you've played baseball alot in your life and have a good idea of what is going on, especially with the strike zone, you'll be fine. Most important thing is to be consistent.

For softball, it's not hard to call the pitches.  It's more of an issue whether the umpire understands that the strikezone is located from the front knee to the back shoulder and not where it hits around home plate.

Never umped baseball before, but having the catcher there alters an umpires perspective, so it can affect from hitter to hitter, whether a pitch in a spot is a strike or a ball.

One of the funniest thing I ever had happen while umping an intramural league game was the gal catcher (keep in mind that coed teams usually put a bad player behind home plate) arguing a ball/strike.  The ball bounced on the hard ground about 3 feet in front of the plate and bounced perfectly through the strike zone.  She insisted several times that it was a strike.

Oh man. The arguing would kill me. I'd be like GMAFB this is just for fun and all about getting better!! :curse:

But I'll def. chill out with umps (especially baseball ones).

Nope. Throughout my tennis career I was too generous with line calls to be honest. I totally regret it now though....

Been questioned but who doesn't get that when most of your opponents are very arrogant.

LOL! How many times did you get one called on you?

I get really pissed off standing out in left field when some douche is trying to take a walk.  They're just afraid to hit the ball because they know I'm gonna catch it.

Yes.  I possibly broke my hand (x rays inconclusive) on a comebacker.  It was either my hand or my throat.  Pitched the last 4 innings of the game and played all of game 2 old school style.

No shame in walking in softball.  On base percentage is the most closely correlated statistic to softball victory.

My cousin took one off the face while pitching

broken nose
broken jaw

I play pitcher every once and a while. While playing intramurals, we were playin the "football" team, I was pitching and JF1 hit one back at my face I caught it and proceeded to talk crap the rest of the game.  BTW we won, 7-4.

Played at Twin Oaks back in college in the summer, and  I've been playing year round since I moved down here.  Most of the time I have to agree that a great defensive play is the best.  Throwing a guy out at the plate, or who is trying to go first to third gets me all "GOOMF!  Who are you trying to run on!"

Although my finest softball moment came when I pulled a hamstring playing in a tournament in like 150 degree heat.  Our team had to take an out the next time I was up (kind of a fp I guess), but in the last inning, with two outs I had to hit.  Knocked a line shot into LC that plated the winning run.  Hopped to first base on one leg pumping my fist Kirk Gibson style.

I umpired a ton of baseball, girl's softball back in high school college.  Pretty cool job, except that it was pretty easy to work a whole lot more than I really wanted to.  I don't think I could have beat the money at the time though.

I played for several years on a church team where I grew up.  I think in one period we won one game in three years.  Had several guys on the team that were slightly slow (mentally and physically) at best.  The other guys were high school losers who thought they could throw a guy out at third from center field when the runner even danced off second.  Of course they were trying to throw to one of the retards who couldn't catch a ball if it was underhanded to them.  Runner scored every time.

Lost an intramural game one time 52-2.  Ran out of time in two innings.

bump...took a line drive to the noggin last night (I was pitching).  Pleased to report that I wasn't knocked out and my glasses got bent but not broken.  Got hit just in front of my left ear...head is a little lopsided this morning.  I jumped up and threw out the Chris Farley "it doesn't hurt here or here so much, but right here".  Everyone laughed...

We have a gold glove trophy that has "Defensive MVP" engraved on it.  We give  it out at the end of each doubleheader to the guy with the most steller defensive performance of the night.  I won last night.  Turned 3 double plays.   :dancin:

Saw this thread and thought of that. The best part was it was the 3rd out. And you spiked the ball right there and said SIT DOWN BITCH! Freems just glared at you the rest of the game. Probably the most emotion I have seen Freems have while playing a sport.
Then you got his auto after the game, very awkward moment in my life.
