Title: speaking of Barry Switzer..the player he still swears as most talented Sooner
Post by: The Manhatter on June 10, 2009, 06:23:12 PM
ever.

Marcus Dupree.  He was 6-3 235-240 with 4.4-4.5 speed back in the early 80's.  Watch these highlights...he was an absolute horse.   I've heard Switzer say that he was the most talented player he ever coached in Norman and it isn't close.  He still contends Dupree most talented Sooner even after Adrian Peterson.  His pro career got f'd by a terrible knee injury and drugs.

I saw Marcus Dupree play in person . . . I still remember that K-State DB he ran over like a Mack Truck on his way into the endzone at KSU stadium.

Everybody was all geeked up at K-State for that game because they thought ol' Jim Dickey was gonna pull another "4 onside kicks" on the Sooners.  It was actually a close game . . . for awhile.

I can't recall any stretch of time like you had between '82-'85 where you had 3 big RB's like Herschel, Dupree, and Bo...and they all grew up within a few hundred miles from each other.

Wonder how ole' Switzer got that kid out of Philadelphia, Mississippi?  :D

Barry loaded up Billy Sims on a Jet and took him down to Philly Miss . . . and the rest was history.

Major recruiting violation these days.

Don't forget George Rogers at South Carolina, grew up in Duluth, GA

forgot Rogers and Eric Dickerson though he was from Texas.  All were within about 5 years of each other.  All big RB's with great wheels.

The dude ran for nearly 1,000 yards in a 1/2  season, ran for over 230 in a bowl game while injured (Switzer thought he could have ran for 400 if he TRIED!!!) and  never attended a class his sophomore year. When asked about it, an OU representative replied, "So what?"  Wow!!!  How things have changed.  :D

"We want to have a university the football team can be proud of" . . . Former OU president.

You should have seen the parking lot at the Bud Wilkerson Athletic Dorm during the Switzer era . . . they just flaunted it man, it was unreal.
