Title: Will Weiser push for an NIT bid this season?
Post by: michigancat on February 21, 2006, 06:43:38 AM
I'm going to go out on a limb and say....no.

I hope not.

If we win 2 more games we'll probably be in without a push from Weiser.  3 more and we're an NIT lock.  Granted, that won't be easy to do.

With 2 more wins we'd have wins over at least 6 postseason teams, likely 2 NCAA teams.  Probably more b/c I think a couple of our OOC opponents will win their conferences.  Plus our SOS and RPI will be higher than last year's.  Could be some decent regional match-ups around as well.

I'd have been happy with a trip to Fort Worth and after 6 years I'd be happy with an invite to the NIT, even more so if we managed a road game.  tcu and Tubbs in Manhattan seems so long ago.

If you're worried about an NIT bid saving Wooly's job, don't worry about it.  He's gone anyway.

Just give me some post-season basketball!!!

Because I do not like the NIT. I think it's worthless. As worthless as the Fort Worth Bowl.

I hope we can get a NIT bid and make a nice run.  It would be a better situation and maybe more attractive for an incoming coach.

That's true perhaps. I don't know, I've just always hated the NIT for whatever reason. I know it's not really a reasonable feeling, but there it is.

At least the NIT forces you to finish in about the top third of college basketball teams (300+) to get to postseason.  In football you finish in the top half (of 100+ teams) and you make postseason.

Top 1/3rd is too many, and naturally the top 1/2 is way too many.

The Big Dance is the optimum postseason.

Ummm...so?

In college basketball about 1/5 of the teams are from BCS land. That's why nearly everyone goes 9-2/8-3 in OOC play.

In football 1/2 of the teams come from BCS land.

The NIT isn't easier than making a bowl. They are about the same.

I would be happy w/the ft worth bowl for football, because they've been so kickass for so long that a lower-tier bowl would make me think they are on the right track

The NIT is worthless for a SIXTH YEAR COACH. But I do see your point FAN. We need to break the 6 year streak.

I want the NIT so we can add a year to the NIT section thingy on the wall of Bramlage.

Good points fatty, and there is a good post on Wabash about the NIT.  Lower Tier bowls do give you more for you bang for your buck than the NIT, no doubt.

However, I do think the NIT, especially after our long dry spell, is a lot better than nothing.  I could care less of where it will fit in the outlook of Wooldridge's 6 years here, I want the NIT for the program (any kind of momentum is good at this point) and for the kids who have worked their tails off, and for us fans who have haven't tasted it since Billy Ball made its final appearance in Manhattan.

I don't mind given Wooly another 10K (or more) for that. :)

everyone doesn't go 8-3 in the OOC.  just like in football every game has a winner and a loser - the overall OOC record is .500.

going to the NIT this year makes KSU a (slightly) better job.  and it would be enjoyable to see KSU play a few more games.  i hope KSU goes 5-2 or 5-1 or 6-1 some other such improbable record over their last scheduled games and big 12 tournament games and make the dance.  but barring that, the NIT certainly beats another year of nothing.

oh, and not going to the NIT to assuage the doubts of a few internet fans who think that an NIT run would save wooldridge's job is fool's gold.
