Title: Anthony Bourdain
Post by: steve dave on June 04, 2009, 10:49:36 AM
AB made a list of the 13 places to eat before you die.  I have 11 to go.

Quote
13. Oklahoma Joe's Barbecue (Kansas City)

People may disagree on who has the best BBQ. Here, the brisket (particularly the burnt ends), pulled pork and ribs are all of a quality that meet the high standards even of Kansas City natives.

It's the best BBQ in Kansas City, which makes it the best BBQ in the world.

i remember when he actually went to Overland Park Joe's, it was probably 7-8 years ago.  there was an article in the KC Star food section about his visit and had a picture of him chowing ribs.

note:  OP Joe's isn't the best BBQ in KC, let alone the world.

I'm gonna have to agree with piss on this one.  The best bbq in the world is found at 47th and Mission. :peek:
Yes, there is a difference and yes, I live at 50th and Mission.   :woohoo:

There is no OK Joe's in OP. I'm confused.  The one in the pic is from the OKJ in Westwood isn't it?

it's actually in Kansas City, Kansas, not Westwood.  the reason I refer to it as Overland Park/Olathe Joe's is because that's who it caters to.  white dudes who like onion rings on their brisket sandwiches and know nothing about good barbeque.

you guys know who makes really good bbq? applebees. they have these little riblets that are probably the best bbq i've ever had. they also have a really good bourbon steak which is pretty good bbq, but not as good as the riblets. there is one in manhattan over by the mall. not sure if there are any in kc or not. pretty sure lawrence has one though.

 That's actually my 2nd favorite sammich.  The Carolina w/ pulled pork and spicy sauce is my fav.  Enjoy your boring hunk of meat up in KCK you downtown elitist.  ;)

Haven't had OKJoe's.  It is about a mile from me in Olathe, but haven't been there.

I will vouch for (in no particular order):

1.  Gates.  Eating BBQ with 'clams and Saul is a bonus.

2.  Bryants.  Don't get there too often.

3.  Jack's Stack.  Like the one in Martin City better than OP.  Freighthouse district one is good as well.

4.  Smokehouse.

5.  Used to like KC Masterpiece, but they kind of went down hill on me.

BTW, the worst BBQ I've had in KC was great, so maybe I'm not a real good source of good BBQ.

applebees?

also just remembered one more thing about this applebees place. they call their big beers "brewtus". lmao at this. always make jokes to the waitresses about this too. "hey hun, how about another brew? make it a brewtus. a brewtus brew from the brewtiful waitress." lmao again here. L-M-A-O.

if the waitress is a waiter i'll usually say something like "how 'bout anothers brewtus brotus!" again lmao here. this applebees place is great. really good bbq too as i said before.

love me some brewtuses. when i go to applebees, which is basically every meal that i'm not eating frozen pizzas, ok no i don't get to go that often but i do go sometimes, when i go, i sit at the bar so i can see the brewtender up close and personal.  helps if she's a hottie, know what i mean?  anywho, she's usually some super hot piece of trim from ku or something and so i tip her a lot.   when i sit down i grab the rolled silverware and chant "BREW-TUS"  "BREW-TUS" and keep going until my new feathered friend brings the boss a cold one.  after about 12 Brewti  i'm all boozed up and don't even feel like eating. it's hilarious.  tell ya what though fellas, that snap that bartends at applebees is 100% Grade A, certified, nails.  +they love me because i tip like a madman.

The Gates Burnt Ends on Bun is perhaps the holy grail of BBQ.  Its very streaky there, but when they've got it right, not even god himself could make a better sandwich.

lol no. That's some frozen crap created by a food scientist then mass produced to be shipped to applebees all over the world. At least this is usually the case with most restaurants.

And some of the best bbq I've had is at this place in Alabama where I live this summer. It's called Big Bob Gibson's bbq. They are super elite and the dozens of trophies sitting around the restaurant are there to prove it. These include a handful of 1st place trophies in the categories of brisket and sauce I believe it was.

Gates?  Are you people high?  There food is average at best, fries are crap.  Big fan of Bryants, but Okie Joe's is hands down the best, most consistently good bbq in town/planet Earth.  Brisket, pulled pork, ribs, fries, bbq beans, all the best in town.  If you don't trust me Anthony Bourdain has a skilled pallet.
