Awaji, Brown to Transfer
MANHATTAN, Kan. ? Junior guard Buchi Awaji and sophomore guard Fred Brown have been released from their athletic scholarships at Kansas State and will transfer to other institutions,
head men’s basketball Frank Martin announced on Thursday.
“Buchi and Fred have decided to continue their playing careers at other schools,” said Martin. “We appreciate their contributions to the program and wish them the best in the future.”
A 6-foot-5, 185-pound junior from Los Angeles, Calif., Awaji averaged 4.0 points on 50 percent shooting this past season with 1.9 rebounds in 10.8 minutes per game. He scored in double figures four times, including a season-high 12 points against North Carolina Central on Feb. 17.
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound sophomore from West Palm Beach, Fla., Brown averaged 8.1 points on 42.1 percent shooting this past season with 1.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 20.4 minutes per game. He was a part of the first trio (along with Denis Clemente and Jacob Pullen) in school history to each tally 50 or more 3-pointers in a single season. He saw time in 61 games in his two-year career with two starts, averaging 6.2 points on 41.4 percent shooting.
Both finished the spring semester in solid academic standing with Awaji graduating with a social science degree from the university last weekend.

Smokin' Fred Brown will always be my favorite Wildcat.
-
meh.
just wish we had one guy that could come off the bench and be nails from behind the 3pt. line.
-
That sucks (about Fred). Buchi can GTFO.
-
Peterson had better show up
-
:curse:
it's like frank hates people that can shoot.
-
Now for the real question: ayone know what kind of future LLC deal they got?
-
Way to pull a kid's scholarship right before June, Frank. Really gives those kids a lot of time to find another school.
:flush:
-
the latest smokescreen trying to convince people brown is leaving. sorry, not buying it folks.

so we're trading awaji/brown for irving/pete? two guys who can shoot for two guys that can't. I'm fine with losing Awaji, not Fred. We just lost the only two players who shoot >40% from 3, and there's absolutely zero chance either irving or pete come close to shooting 30% from 3.
-
losing fred (which i'm not so sure i like) does open up a spot for freddy.
-
Heard someone talking on the phone on the shuttle to class a few months ago talking about Brown. Said ever since '"the shot" against Texas he got all cocky, wasn't hitting the gym. :ohno: :ohno:
-
kinda bugged me.
-
No Fred. Please say it ain't so.
I knew that soon these transfers were gonna catch up to us and bite us in the ass...
I'm fine with all of them except for this one. :-[
-
room for Devon Peterson and Freddie Asprilla!*

December, 2008: This strong and physical guard has an NFL body. He sprints the lane in transition and can get to the rim or spot up for the open three. He is a streaky shooter from behind the arc at best but when his feet are set he can make you pay. Irving can drive both ways but he seems to favor the right side of the floor. He attacks the basket with a baseline drive or mid range pull up if the spot up three is not available. He drives and finishes through contact with ease because of his tremendous strength. If the on ball defender is not in position he will be knocked out of the play. Irving is a great on ball defender that possess excellent lateral foot speed and quickness. He uses his body well to knock weaker players off the ball when they meet body to body and is capable of defending all three perimeter positions. Irving plays with good energy and passion on both ends of the floor.
yeah, I'm sure that translate well to the Big 12 as a freshman. He may get to Fred's % by the time he's a soph or junior, but he's not shooting that next year, which is what the team needs next year. I should have said above 35%, he'll probably be right at 30%.
-
neither can dribble or defend and are good but not great 3 pt shooters at about 42%. not sure where they'd fit into next year's team anyway. specially buchi. brown would be nice to have when the offense is slumping but would not want him on the floor for any other reason.

who made this assement someone who wathced him play one or two games?
Also fred shot 39% as a senior in florida high school basketball

I'm not saying that he couldn't end up being >40% in college, but I highly doubt he is one right away, and with the departure of both Fred and Awaji, this team needs a guy like that desperately next year.
-

that's probably about right. irving is a better recruit that brown, imo. but only slightly and he's 2 years behind. no question that brown would have helped more over the next two years.
it is disappointing. i was holding out a forlorn hope that one of awaji/brown would decide to come back.

FRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :crybaby:

Goodbye Buchi. For at least one year, you were the only guy on the team with NBA talent. Look forward to seeing you lighting up sportscenter sometime soon for a solid pro squad. God Bless and sorry bout my language in front of your grandma. :frown:
