I'm no aviator, but what is the difference between crashing and not putting the landing gear down?

This is clealy the start of another round of 9/11 style attacks.  Dude with a foreign name, learn to fly but don't care about learning to land, etc.......

He'll get a job with American Eagle making short hops from MHK to Dallas/ Forth Worth.
