Because of his early success and most baseball players are superstitious. Not to mention Zack is this era's Fidrych. He did not want to change the jersey. I remember an article about him when he was with the Wranglers, he just wished people would leave him alone and let it be. Zack could not believe people in KC wanted him to fail, by using his real name on his jersey. Let me see if I can find the article.
