I was in a fraterinty for a year and got the hell out.  But your misconception of it "paying for friends" is way off.  It was cheaper to live in the fraternity house I lived in considering it payed for good meals and a nice roof over your head.  I payed a lot more for the appartment I moved into after the fraterinty.  The part I couldn't get away from is zero privacy in the frat house.  50 guys sharing a sleeping quarters usually 2-6 sharing a room.  Everywhere you went there was someone there.

This.

As a previous poster alluded to, you pay far less in a fraternity than you do living on your own in an apartment. Living in the dorms is just as equal as it is in a fraternity.

I lived in a dorm, a fraternity, and an apartment, so I have a perspective of all 3.  They each offer benefits and drawbacks.  I think one of the most important thing a fraternity provides is a system of networking after college.  I have a connection to thousands of brothers nationwide that I'm able to utilize in job searches, etc.  Neither apartments or dorms provide that.

QFT, I have lived in all three as well plus I'm living in a house now. Living at the frat was unbelievably cheaper than where I live now. The dorm was comparable but still more expensive plus less to do. I'd say the greek system provides a more well rounded college experience. Make fun us if u want, but it's your loss.

i have hundreds of contacts/networking crap and never once lived in a frat (far from that crap).  plus going through a bitch of an undergrad (college of architecture) and getting married during that time.  seems like being in a frat makes you obligated to go to more weddings to talk about that one time so and so did this, which, i have done with countless people i graduated with.

the perception when you're in a frat is that everyone who is in another frat is a complete douche bag, and everyone who is not is just a little bitch who was too afraid to join one so they use the "its gay" excuse.

There's nothing wrong with being Greek..Both of my parents were Greeks and I was a Greek.  They encouraged it...but the key is trying to figure out where u best belong...there is money issues with some houses (usually more with the sororities) but if you find the right guys, and to where u are comfortable around them and what they are doing within the house then I would reccomend it...I still have brothers from way back that I talk too..It can be a great experience if you just do your homework and find out where u think you best belong..I mean there's never "any" guarantees" in anything but it's worth a shot...

I know a ton of people that were/are in frats and a ton that weren't/aren't.  Pretty even douchiness across the board.  Agree with the comment about groups.  Rarely do you come across a group of d00ds larger than 4 people that aren't going to seem like douches.

Yeah you're probably right, but still did not like the fraternity life and maybe it made me a little bitter because I missed out on some fun stuff I would have much rather been doing the first year of college.
