looks like the formatino we run on defense is changing. i know we've had some battles in the past about this maybe this will make our defense better
“We’re not running the 3-4 defense anymore,” Pomele said. “We’re running something that fits us well as a defense, something we can adjust to a lot better.”
That alone could be cause for celebration among Wildcat fans who grew tired of watching opponents shred coach Ron Prince’s defense on a weekly basis.
Defensive end Eric Childs insisted the Wildcats didn’t mind the 3-4 defense, but he acknowledged that certain pieces are required to run the system effectively.
“If you look at the NFL, you’re going to need a superior, super-big nose guard that’s going to stuff the middle,” Childs said. “I don’t think we have anyone that’s that big.”
“To me,” he added, “the personnel fits this defense a little bit more, just the way we’re running things.

i wonder if coach snyder will name this the "4-21-09 defense" .-. would be elite imo

Kinda revolutionary to form your defense around your existing players, rather than the exact opposite. Yet another example of what an ego maniacal dumbass Prince is.
*edit- Also: I'm digging your daily subjects, Trips.

It blows my mind that Eric Childs is still here. 12 years?

FYP. Hope you don't mind.

I meant to put that but forgot.
He's always really highly ranked in video games, though.

The D will live or die with Darhnaz.

We'll have a better defense, can't get any worse . . . but with VK, I think they'll actually look like they have a frankin clue.
-
I have a strong feeling that our defense will look like it did in 06 and our offense will look like it did against baylor in 06.
-
Our defense will be better. Not DOD good, but hopefully top 50 in the nation good. I don't think top 50 is asking too much.

You're dreaming if you think this bunch of losers is going to go from 100+ in defense to 50. Coaching will improve, but if you polish a turd it is still a turd.

True. Maybe shoot for 30 spots; top 70.

Best we can hope for is between 65-85 on Total Defense and scoring defense.

Why? The D-Line could legitimately be one of best in the conference, and you know Synd's will run the ball all the franking time and eat up clock. Total possessions will drop substantially for our opponents...jumping into the top 50 could very easily happen based on those two factors alone (despite a 5 or 6 win season, JMO).
TOP FITTY HERE WE'Z COME!!! :dancin: :dancin:

Okay . . . well, if you want to delude yourself into thinking that K-State will raise its defensive numbers by 67 plus positions, than go ahead.

"Why? The D-Line could legitimately be one of best in the conference"
What would give anyone that impression? Certainly not based off of prior performance. And, we haven't exactly been bringing in 5 star talent lately. Or, was that just blind optimism?
-
I understand the talent is an issue.
But after hearing the players talk about the technique they are using now compared to the past, its pretty clear that our issues last year went way beyond just not having players. I'm pretty certain we won't be hurt over and over this year by counter plays and QB read. Granted, good OCs (and this league has plenty) will find ways to exploit our issues, I just don't think it will take only the first 30 minutes of watching film Sunday morning to figure that out.
That said, its hard to make significant jumps withouth overhauling what we have on the roster now, but I still think this could be a 60-70-ish defense by the time the season is through.
-
just to give people an idea of where this defense is at.....it ws the 11th rated scoring defense last year giving up a salty 42ppg.....if it had made a 10 point improvment, it could have tied CU and Baylor for 6th in conference in scoring defense.....Texas was #1 at 22ppg...OU's defense was 4th at 30ppg.
we could be "better" and still get run.
-
I agree that better coaching wil show, and the D will improve. But, I think some people are in for a little disappointment when teams continue to score fairly easily on us. Let's be honest, 70's ranked defense, while improved, isn't going to be shutting anyone down
-
Will we really be better without Tib's eye on it? :dunno:

Personnel wise, we are better suited to run the 4-2-5 than we were the 3-4.
We had several decent (thinnish) defensive ends that were okay at the pass rush from the outside, but they were too small to operate in the traditional 3-4 scheme. Childs comes to mind. Felder (if healthy) could probably be another. You also don't have to ask the underperforming DT's to be as disruptive as you did in the 3-4. We can now get away with 240-250 lb. ends and 280 lb. tackles. We couldn't do that before.
Also, we have a bunch of 'tweener' linebackers that probably will fill the "Cat", "Stinger", or whatever you want to call the S/LB hybrid. Tigner is one. We recruited a bunch of smallish LB's to fit the cover 2 scheme when Morris was here, and they had no business being 3-4 linebackers. They may actually have a place here now.
I feel okay about the safeties if they can stay healthy. Herndon will be a decent strong safety, and if Hartman actually learns something, he may develop into a decent free (he is probably a tad slow though). If we can keep Moore out of trouble and qualified, he'll provide the lockdown corner we need. However, after that, pray the front seven gets to the QB before he has a chance to throw because our collection of corners is about as bad as it's been since the early 90's.
I'm in agreement with most that we can see a significant jump in defensive rankings, but if this defense gets below 60th in the nation in total defense and scoring defense (with road games to OU and Tech on the slate), Koenning should win the freaking Broyles award.

top 50 would probably be good for top 2 in the big 12. we won't be near that.

a lot of rebuilding offenses in the north should help
