so...i really want/need to get some new music to listen to. in this thread we will all share one band, singer, or whatever that you like. there are only two rules.
1)has to be somewhat obscure- no U2, Kanye, etc.
2)has to include a youtube link
with that in mind i give you the hosty duo. pretty much my most favorite favorite band. mostly play in oklahoma, but come to maes every few months thanks to some random kstate grad who saw them play the night before a ksu/ou fball game in norman around 1998 back when they were the hosty trio.

This is a song by the Walkmen. I suppose their obscurity is relative, but I've really been digging on their latest album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_fkop71wOc&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_fkop71wOc&feature=related)

the walkmen lost their obscurity when they whored themselves out to a Saturn car commercial back in 2001
-
all old music here but.. :gocho:

depeche mode has an interesting looking new album coming out in a couple weeks
-
My choices don't really seem to fit your style, but MGMT is probably still "obscure":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVnRzEjpUmE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtUI5MC9tVM&feature=related
They are sort of 2008's breakout, along the lines of 2007's Vampire Weekend (my faves):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XC2mqcMMGQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSa23oJy78U&feature=related

Also, here's another band you won't like: The Faint. Been around for years, but still obscure for some reason (maybe because based out of Omaha). Awesome live show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vegCO0krBZc&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ2qpYYBC-w&feature=related
...OK, I just can't stop myself, for some way more mellow/quirky stuff try Sufjan Stevens or Andrew Bird (also awesome live). And if you like Zep then try Wolfmother (obscure?) (AMAZING live show).
Wolfmother/Zeppelin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgSqPHIY60E&feature=related
Andrew Bird: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnXCzFnkxtY

Forgive me, but I must break the rules because this band has nothing on youtube.

Mr. Lewis & The Funeral Five is a band out of Austin. They also happen to kick ass.

The batman video is pretty meh, but it was the only place I could find their song.

Submersed. Not going to post a link, they broke up, not because they were fighting, they all just called it quits and went on to other bands. Music is solid.

interesting inverse chin relationship those two have going on there.
call the police that girl stole that guys chin and added it to her chin in effect leaving him with no chin and her with one chin that is the size of two. don't get me started.
-
Not sure about the obscurity because I live in Wichita, and all they play on the radio is Mandatory Metallica & crap from the 70's & 80's like van halen. But I had never heard of this guy.
But Sage Francis has some different stuff:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiV2stUu5RE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhkV3b9Vhm4
then there's this kid mixing hip hop & violin.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36Xt-XeWnHM
I definately wouldn't consider myself a person that listens rap or hip-hop, but I feel like there's more going on & new stuff comes out more often with that genre and I find myself looking for new stuff down that road. 10 years ago I was more of a white zombie fan and there just doesn't seem to be anything like that out there that doesn't have an old & played out sound.

Obscure music sucks. That's why it is obscure duh. I stopped listening to sucky bands just to be cool a long time ago.

who do you listen to?
i haven't listened to a lot of music over the last five or so years but want to get into the habit again.

although, I really like ben harper. Is he obscure? I mean, most people have hear of him but he's never had anything really high on the billboard. what does that make him?

i really (really) was not meaning to start a thread asking for only supercoolonlyi'veheardofthisband suggestions. ben harper woulda been a fine addition to the thread imo. seen him twice. like him. feel free to suggest someone else. really just want to find some new music. got in a slump and want to get out.
here's a second band for me. was at this show. prob just a few feet left of the camera. grace threw that water bottle out into the crowd and it almost hit me. don't absolutely love them or anything but the song is pretty good and they make some above average music imo.

yeah.
he just seems kinda insincere though. can't get into a lot of his stuff. dunno. maybe i'm being too harsh on him. :dunno:
-
don't know much about him personally, always like his voice. Sounds alot like marvin gaye IMO.
-
i really (really) was not meaning to start a thread asking for only supercoolonlyi'veheardofthisband suggestions.
If that's true, starting the thread by saying you only want obscure stuff and use the example of an Oklahoma band that only leaves Oklahoma because you or someone you know was probably a bad idea.
:dunno:
-
If a band is very obscure, isn't it also true that it is somewhat obscure? (Like, if you have a lot of gold, it is also true that you have some gold.)
It's a good strategy. Without a stipulation like that, you're going to get stuff you already know of or a much higher percentage of sh*t.
-
I don't normally listen to this kind of music too often, but I like this song right now:

Yeah, I was kind of worried that my suggestions weren't sufficiently obscure since they are all major label artists I think (and some have been on Letterman). :ohno:

been listening to alot of los campesinos! lately. super catchy.
You! Me! Dancing! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj6SO_yKMe8)
We throw parties, you throw knives (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTbj0Wyx12Q)

Saw them twice ('04 and '05). Got to hang out w/ Donald for a little while after the show in '05. Never noticed it while he was on stage but the dude is like five feet tall. Fun fact.
