Title: music
Post by: Rick Daris on April 02, 2009, 07:57:58 PM
so...i really want/need to get some new music to listen to. in this thread we will all share one band, singer, or whatever that you like. there are only two rules.

1)has to be somewhat obscure- no U2, Kanye, etc.

2)has to include a youtube link

with that in mind i give you the hosty duo. pretty much my most favorite favorite band. mostly play in oklahoma, but come to maes every few months thanks to some random kstate grad who saw them play the night before a ksu/ou fball game in norman around 1998 back when they were the hosty trio.

This is a song by the Walkmen. I suppose their obscurity is relative, but I've really been digging on their latest album.

My choices don't really seem to fit your style, but MGMT is probably still "obscure":

They are sort of 2008's breakout, along the lines of 2007's Vampire Weekend (my faves):

Also, here's another band you won't like: The Faint.  Been around for years, but still obscure for some reason (maybe because based out of Omaha).  Awesome live show.

...OK, I just can't stop myself, for some way more mellow/quirky stuff try Sufjan Stevens or Andrew Bird (also awesome live).  And if you like Zep then try Wolfmother (obscure?) (AMAZING live show).

Not sure about the obscurity because I live in Wichita, and all they play on the radio is Mandatory Metallica & crap from the 70's & 80's like van halen.   But I had never heard of this guy.

But Sage Francis has some different stuff:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiV2stUu5RE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhkV3b9Vhm4

then there's this kid mixing hip hop & violin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36Xt-XeWnHM

I definately wouldn't consider myself a person that listens rap or hip-hop, but I feel like there's more going on & new stuff comes out more often with that genre and I find myself looking for new stuff down that road.   10 years ago I was more of a white zombie fan and there just doesn't seem to be anything like that out there that doesn't have an old & played out sound.

i really (really) was not meaning to start a thread asking for only supercoolonlyi'veheardofthisband suggestions. ben harper woulda been a fine addition to the thread imo. seen him twice. like him. feel free to suggest someone else. really just want to find some new music. got in a slump and want to get out.

here's a second band for me. was at this show. prob just a few feet left of the camera. grace threw that water bottle out into the crowd and it almost hit me. don't absolutely love them or anything but the song is pretty good and they make some above average music imo.

If that's true, starting the thread by saying you only want obscure stuff and use the example of an Oklahoma band that only leaves Oklahoma because you or someone you know was probably a bad idea.

:dunno:
Title: Re: music
Post by: chum1 on April 04, 2009, 08:41:16 AM
If a band is very obscure, isn't it also true that it is somewhat obscure?  (Like, if you have a lot of gold, it is also true that you have some gold.)

It's a good strategy.  Without a stipulation like that, you're going to get stuff you already know of or a much higher percentage of sh*t.

Yeah, I was kind of worried that my suggestions weren't sufficiently obscure since they are all major label artists I think (and some have been on Letterman).   :ohno:
