Eat some of that meat that's on the rotating thing that they shave off and tell me if it sucks as bad over there as it does here.

Stay away from Athens. There's been quite a few violent protests. Word is that it isn't safe for USA'ers there.

It's pretty bad.  You are well traveled and I will take your word for the stuff usually being good.

Pretty much nailed it.  Come to think of it...I shouldn't judge a food based on it's Omaha variant...lesson learned.

the only greek typish dish i've ever had and liked was the shawarma at aladdins cafe in lawrence. they don't have a liquor license but will let you bring your own whatever you want and not charge a corking fee or anything. loved that place. most greek type stuff is pretty disgusting though imo.

I love gyros, but that's it.

You should go to thermopylae and check out where leonidas died.

True dat.

Actually, I really like Mr. Gyros on Metcalf in Overland Park.  The Gyro Plate is good.

Greek food is awesome and really, really cheap.  They eat a lot of lamb, veal, rice etc.   Gyros/ Donor Kebab (Turkish word for them) are what Europeans eat for fast food, and my experience was the further you get away from Greece, the worse they get.  I had one in Norway one time and had to spit it out and throw it away.  Not that I have done an extensive study, but the one exception to this rule seems to be Chicago, where you can get a pretty good Gyro.

I enjoyed Athens but the only real draw is the food and the history.  I stayed in the neighborhood of Placa at the bottom of the hill the Acropolis is on, and that was my favorite part of the city because it looked the most historical.

All of the islands are cool.  You could go to Santorini, which has a lot of interesting geological stuff to look at such as black sand beaches.  If you want to party, go to the island of Corfu and stay at a hostel called the Pink Palace.  Easy on the Ouzo though, that stuff is dangerous.

If you want to relax go to any island, and if you want to see historical stuff go absolutley anywhere. I guess I would figure out which historical sites are the most interesting to you, and plan your trip around that.

How long will you be in Greece?

Santorini is the best of the Greek Isles, period.  Go there.  Stay in Fira, the main town, rent a scooter and drive all over the island.  Naxos is the largest of the Cyclaedes and is a great island if you want some peace and quiet.  Mykonos is fun, but gets on my nerves pretty fast.

Athens is great.  Find a pension or a hostel in the Plaka area, near the Acropolis.

If you want to go somewhere really cool, but that's tough to get to, go to Monemvasia.  Google it.  Amazing.

I thought Delphi was overrated, but I guess you have to see it.  Further north, Meteora is incredible.  A bunch of monestaries built on rock spires.  Incredible landscape and hiking.

Sparta sounds cool, but it's not.  There's nothing there anymore but a boring, modern city.  However, nearby Mystras - a Byzantine ruins on the hill - is really cool.

Tell me where you're going and I can give you some more specific advice.  Greece is awesome.  It's my favorite country outside the US of A.

And yes, a gyro and french fry combo, maybe a greek salad on the side, is pretty much the best meal on the planet.

Anytime you are in a tourist area, they will all speak english.  No matter where you are, young people should speak it very well.

Exactly, though Greece is not quite as English-proficient as other European countries.  Some of the friendlist folks I met were older people in the country that didn't speak a lick of English.  Study the Greek alphabet, and how the letters are pronounced, beforehand.  It will help a lot with the signs (not many signs are translated outside of Athens).

Also, even though Greece is on the Euro now, it's still relatively inexpensive!
