Good column by Blair Kerkhoff in today's KC Star about how some of the best coaches struggled in their first year and took off in their second year. He sites.....
Bob Stoops
Mike Leach
Gary Pinkel
Bill Callahan
Dennis Franchione
Guy Morriss
Mark Mangino
Frank Beamer

Every K-State fan needs to read that and come back to reality. Great job by Mr.Kerkhoff.
-
It's physically impossible for Mark Mangino to ever take off, in any year.
Good article though by Kerkhoff, maybe the first semi-positive thing about KSU I've seen him write in years.
-
Good column...
People are also forgetting that the only real problem KSU has is a bad offense. They act like the two major lineup changes and a third string lineman quitting are the end of the world..
-
All of you... get out of here with your positive spin. K-State football is finished as we know it and within 5 years we'll be demoted to a NAIA team fighting with Emporia over fans! How dare you speak positively of this Wildcat team!

Heck, I'm even a member of the purple piss punch club.

I think he invented that name after a post I made over there so I win. :fiesta:

If you're referring to me Pisser you're wrong... dead wrong. The name is an original.

I think a huge problem was that some KSU fans really bought into Bill Snyder somehow "planning" to retire when he did because of the "talent" coming back on the team and that this team was ready to go. For some reason, it never occurred to KSU fans that (a) maybe Bill was still talking in "coach speak" and wasn't going to run down his players (b) it wouldn't be a good thing for the coaching search if Bill were to say that the team sucks (c) KSU was not going to be the "exception" to the coaching change problems that occur and the related w/l record.
That being said Bob Stoops' worst year was his first...it was also a bowl year.
-
OU's four years prior to Bob Stoops: no bowls, no winning records. Bob Stoops' first year at OU: 7-5 and the Independence Bowl. Second year: national championship.
Mike Leach's first year at Tech: 7-6, 3-5. If we finish with a 6-6, 3-5 record this year, I'd be happy.
Do any of us here really want the next Gary Pinkel, Bill Callahan, Dennis Franchione, Guy Morriss, or Mark Mangino?
Now, I've been saying since mid-summer that we shouldn't expect great things this year, because of our finishes the past couple of years and the fact that the experience we had returning hadn't done jack squat. I also predicted back then that after the Baylor game, which I expected to lose, a lot of people would be calling for Prince's head because of the crazy 8-4 "reasonable expectations" that the kool-aid drinkers were throwing out there. And here we are.
I was accused of being a Negative Nelly back then and hating Prince. I responded that I'd probably be on here defending Prince when all the koolaiders had done their 180's and turned on him because we weren't 8-4. I really haven't defended him this week, and I have some definite concerns, but that's not because I expected a better record at this point. Prince has actually done better than I expected so far.
Comparing his first year to those of the other Big XII coaches, though, isn't a very good argument for Prince, IMO.

I thought it was Purple Piss Punch People?
Not club.
I think I'm right.
-
Goldy likes to argue about everything.
Gary Pinkel and Mark Mangino, kill me now :banghead:
-
7-5, minimum.
-
7-5, minimum.
that's beyond retarded. We SUCKED last year.
-
Quit lowering your expectations fatty.
-
7-5 should get Prince coach of the year in the big 12.

"YOU'RE BASHING SNYDER! DECADE OF DOMINANCE LOL!"
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
