Title: Torrent Shutdown
Post by: ChicagoCat on March 10, 2009, 03:56:36 PM
Cox just shut down my internet a moment ago  :runaway: A pop up came up when I opened Firefox saying that I was sharing a specific Torrent file and to delete it.  Then I had to call them to reactivate my internet. :curse: I had one of those peer protection things going that SD talked about before, I think it was peer guardian?  Anywayz, they just did it to my friend too.  Anyone else having trouble or have a better way around this??  :dunno:

This just happened to my neighbor too.  He was using forced encryption and a firewall..I was under the impression that would prevent the ISP from detecting what files were transferring.  Guess I was wrong.

I haven't been caught yet though..But I've been downloading obscure stuff that ISP's probably wouldn't realize is copyrighted.

It seems only Cox that does this because whenever I read the comments on piratebay and someone says that has happened to them then they say their ISP is Cox.

haven't dnlded peer guardian yet, should I even bother?

Not entirely true - Everest (or SureWest I guess is what they're called now) does the same thing.

None of that sh*t works.

They won't bother you unless you get caught again.

Your ISP isn't going to bother to watch what you download, but if someone like the RIAA, MPAA catch you they will alert them

RIAA "claimed" to not sue people anymore and just tell their ISP to shut off their service

Also, need details:

file type torrented - music, movie, game, software, etc. ???
tracker ???

Most ISPs are doing this.  Basically, just download stuff nobody cares about, like porn.

best thing to do is never seed on public trackers

they go easier on those who only download :blank:

if what we are doing is illegal then what Cox is doing is illegal.

Someone should sue their ass but I'm guessing it would be expensive.

I got in trouble for music but had a couple movies on there too.  They said I was sharing and named a specific file and time that I was sharing.  I figure SD's method of being a bad person will prob keep you safe.

I don't think it makes you a horrible person...mainly because i do it too  :keke:

When the ISP starts putting a limit on the amount you can download is when i will get pissed.

Yeah, I'm looking for the specific file so I don't do it too.  They usually key on a couple specific files.  Was it Britney or something and you're embarrassed?  Don't be.  Just pretend it was for the wife/girlfriend or just fess up to it and show how secure you are with yourself :dunno:

popular movie titles like Watchmen, Slumdog Millionaire...etc are most likely at the top of their list.  Just guessing.

They care, but only if you are selling it, or are a business using large #'s of pirated copies
