Title: Arrested Development
Post by: BigCat on March 09, 2009, 03:51:48 PM
Mrs. Featherbottom - OK, who'd like a banger in the mouth?

Featherbottom - Oh right, I forgot, here in the states you call it a 'sausage' in the mouth.

Michael - We just call it a sausage.

What's the running total now on great shows that fox has canceled far too early?

Meh. Malcom got a pretty fair run.

Family Guy, Firefly, some would say the O.C., etc.

At the same time they produce crap (American Dad, bad reality TV), run an awful show that should have been canceled a long time ago for 13 seasons (King of the Hill), and run other good shows into the ground by overplaying them (House, the Simpsons). Thank goodness for NBC.

P.S. Malcolm in the Middle makes me want to punch elderly people.

It's weird that I've disliked other "shows" more, but I've never felt such extreme dislike for specific actors.

I've said this before, but I still feel guilty for not discovering Arrested Development until after it was canceled. But I was out of the country at the time, so it also makes me angry at America.

Yes, I would say this.  Can still catch it from time to time on Soap Channel though.

KotH is still pretty good. Better writing than the Simpsons now, imo.

there is an AD movie in the works fwiw but i'm sure it will suck as they try to reproduce all of the insanely quirky humor that the original series was so good at

How will it suck?  It's being written by and stars all of the original people.

oh i don't know.  maybe the same way that everything in the star wars saga after the empire strikes back sucks?

Not sure how well it will translate into a feature length movie.  Seems like every sow pretty much stood on it's own, not sure if they can keep the gag going for an hour and a half.  Regardless, I'll throw down my 9 bucks to watch it.

But there were so many running jokes in that series - If you started in the middle and watched one episode, about 38% of the humor wouldn't register.  <-- my theory on why it didn't last.

You're definitely right about that, but you could say the same for almost every show on television.  (If you only watch one episode in the middle of a season, you won't fully understand what is going on.)  I was more referring to the fact that the shows didn't necessarily need to be watched chronologically to be enjoyed, or even understood.  But yeah, if you didn't see the episode where Buster gets his hand bit off, or when Oscar was swapped for George in jail, etc.  you might be a little lost.

Oh, and:  "I'm Oscar.  Dot Com."

It didn't do well because it was in a poor time slot and it was too smart for people.

they tried moving nights/times.  the bottom line is that the american television watching public doesn't want to support shows like AD.  they have to think to much to be entertained by AD, they have to be smart enough to get the jokes.

television in the US plays to the lowest common denominator.  this is not fox's fault.

This is why I'm surprised that a show like 30Rock is doing so well.

like someone said earlier, a lot of AD's jokes carried over from week to week, there were just a ton of ongoing jokes.  it also moved really quickly.  i just don't see 30 Rock in the same light, it's funny but the jokes aren't anything that you have to "get" to laugh at.

Some of them are.  30 Rock is pretty damn witty.

Arrested Development suffered for many reasons.

1) As mentioned, it is too involved to get into mid-season.  I'm 'ead 'erious.
2) Suffers with commercial breaks.  They kill the flow.  DVD is the best format.
3) FOX did move it all over the frickin' place.  They also preempted it for baseball all the time too.   :'byecruelworld: Nobody knew when it was on.  And if you missed an ep, you are out of the loop bigtime.  Moreso than with other shows.
4) More than anything, Americans are dumb and Arrested Development is smart.

QFT.  It's like I always say:  The average person is borderline retarded.

jesus christ..."I loved arrested development but america didn't because they were stupid and I am smart!!!" gmafb w/ this garbage.

arrested development was absolutely fantastic but failed because it was on fox at a crappy time and got moved around too much. if that show would have debuted at thursday night on NBC it would still be on and be a huge hit. fact. gmafb w/ every single arrested development lover (but me) thinking they are some sort of comedic genius for "getting" the show.

Edit to Add:
you want to talk about comedic tragedies on the fox network, let's discuss Greg the Bunny getting pulled after like five episodes in favor of The Bernie Mac Show

I take serious offense to this. There is more evidence than just my love for Arrested Development that I am a comedic genius.

i never said "they" were stupid.  i'd include myself in the "only getting half of the writer's jokes" crowd, thank you very much.

see...now i feel bad. wasn't singling anyone here out, we're all fantastic. i've just had to hear/read "gosh that was one  great show. lord knows i watched it and laughed every single week. guess it was just "too smart" for the average american." one to many times.

sometimes funny shows just don't last cause they're on the wrong network, at the wrong time and the network doesn't have a clear idea of what they want to do w/ it, ie -Greg the Bunny.

With Family Guy, I remember watching the first episode and laughing my ass off, then never watching it again. With AD, I'd never seen it in an original broadcast... For me, I'm not a regular television viewer. Which is why tivo is so great, because I tape the 1.5 shows a week I actually try and follow, and could care less about the rest.

Just a theory, but I think peoples' short attention span and busy schedules are what have killed good tv the most. Hell, even 30 Rock (as of last season) was struggling for viewers. Glad they kept it going. When was the last time you worked your schedule around 'must see TV'?

The writing of AD amazes me because they clearly wrote in extremely subtle jokes and references (even in the first few episodes) that manifest themselves much later in the series.

"I was the world's first analyst and therapist!"

"Yeah, and those business cards almost got you arrested."
