Title: interesting quote on recruits/positions
Post by: sys on March 03, 2009, 04:51:32 PM
from jerry meyer.

Quote
Everyone thinks they are a position lower when the true value in today's game is to play up a position. One of the greatest fallacies in the AAU world. The game is getting smaller, quicker and more skilled, not bigger, slower and less skilled.

not sure how that applies to ksu.  maybe with sutton as a 4, but ksu will have a lot of big depth next year, and sutton doesn't have the mass that a normal undersized 4 carries.

I think it means he should play PF.  Can you imagine having that much less scoring prowess coming from that position?

I buy the idea that the game is getting faster and more highly skilled; it's just the nature of all sports in general. Talent level goes up as time moves forward.

But I don't think it's prudent to assume that in today's game (or in the future) that you won't need talented bigs. Obviously players like Colon don't do a damn thing for you, but Blake Griffins and Cole Aldriches do. Hell, Maric is probably auditioning for a role in My Giant 2 right now and he was a great player in the B12.

i think meyer is half right.  the average of the game is getting smaller, quicker, and more skilled in the front court, however, the game is getting bigger, quicker, and more skilled in the back court.   :dunno:
as long as our bigs are shaped like samuels and judge, we're playing to what meyer has observed.

i don't agree, i think you do see a tendancy to play a "combo guard" or 2nd pt guard at the 2 whereas you used to see more longer, wing-types at the 2.  and a tendency to play smaller, more skilled players at the 3 (3 guard sets).

obviously, length is still valued, but i do see the trend towards playing more skilled players at the 2 and 3.

guards are bigger, not sure how this can even be debated.

Caught this before the game...thought it was interesting.

I kind of agree with him.  Basically what he's saying is it's more and more important to have shooting and ball handling skills at every position.  Not sure WTF AAU has to do with this, though.

if that's all he's saying then guess what, it's important to have good basketball players on your team.

There's a ton of coaches that don't think it's important to develop ball handling and jump shooting skills for big men.  TONS.

I guess that's what he's saying in his first sentence (moving "up" a position is more valuable).  I would agree that the game is being quicker (stunning insight there), disagree that it's getting "smaller".
