Title: Shady car mechanics
Post by: TAFNA Dude on February 24, 2009, 03:45:49 PM
preface:  dude knows absolutely nothing about cars.

Check engine light came on.  Took it to a mechanic nearby and they told me mice had chewed through some wires.  They replaced them for $200 and gave me my car back.

The very next day the light came back on.  Now they're saying the need to pull out the computer, fix it, and replace some more wires.  This will cost an additional $600.

I'm expecting them to call me when they're done and tell me "Now that the computer is working, we can actually see what's wrong.  We're gonna need to do a few hundred bucks more worth of work to get your car running."

I pay these &@#%s to fix my car.  Not to let them try.  "No..this didn't work..Let's try this!  Nope, $400 more please, we're going to try this now..  No, it's not that either, $200 for trying though.  We think it could be this..but that will cost another $700!"  &@#%ing con artists.

theres a way to manually turn the check engine light off but it won't fix the actual problem if there is one. HTH.

Go to autozone. They'll read the code and tell you what it is. You probably didn't put the gas cap on all the way.

File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.  Won't help you but it'd help others.

Do this before you ever take it in.

It very well could be a gas cap or a silly oxygen sensor.  Either way, no biggie.

$1000 grand total.  Car is still just as bad as the first time I brought it in.  The mechanic said he can't figure it out and to take it to the dealership.   :curse:

i took it to autozone to get that code read before taking it to the Meineke garage attached to the autozone.  the mechanic said he fixed the original problem and there's another one that showed up after he fixed it.

&@#%ing bullcrap.

learn to solder, fix the wires yourself; it's not that hard; and $200 is bullcrap because I they prob could have fixed it with less than $5 in parts.  $200 labor doesn't happen that often.  You got hosed, but the mechanic isn't breaking any laws.   There's a problem with your vehicle, they attempted a diagnosis, it did not fix the problem.  You're not paying them to fix the problem, you're paying them to find & fix the problem.  They'll keep charging until they find the problem.  I would imagine though that if there is a problem with with the computer, it wouldn't have read out proper codes to begin with.   I would go pick up the car, say &@#% you, and drive the mother &@#%er until it stops running.   Is $1000 bucks really worth turning a light off if the car is still running?   It's not like we live in a state that requires passing an emissions test.  Unless the light is flashing, it most likely won't cause severe damage to your car. It just won't run as effecient.

Usual first offender is an O2 sensor. After that, it could be a catalytic convertor (very expensive). You don't leave your car running while you fill up the tank, do you? Good luck.
