Title: Drove by Kauffman Stadium today
Post by: KansasForever on February 22, 2009, 09:37:11 PM
Got off I-70 and drove around the stadium as best as possible.  From a distance the scale of the renovations is pretty staggering.  For example, not only are the exterior concourses much wider now, but they are also largely enclosed.  Practically an entire new facade has been built around the backside of the stadium.  It sort of looks like a spaceship has landed and has halfway swallowed old Kauffman Stadium.  Think Soldier Field, but better executed (at least from a distance).

There was also the walkaround area being built behind the scoreboard, but that was not as visible or as impressive as the concourse stuff.  Also, they were just beginning to put up the metal framework for what will soon be the new scoreboard crown . . . finally.

Can't wait for April to eat another colorless gray hot dog again, even though I will be freezing my a$$ off in gale force winds as usual.

Royals official website just doesn't do it justice.  I've been waiting every month for some truly revealing pics of the renovations, but all we ever get are completely contextless shots of brick walls, concrete floors, scaffolding, and construction tarp.  Really sucky photography composition going on by the Royals media department.

Not a single shot from a quarter mile away showing the whole stadium in its glory like I got right off of I-70 earlier today.  I should have brought my camera.

i wonder how they're going to manage the area where you can walk by the scoreboard, if anyone with a ticket can go back there or if you need to have lower level seats.

Yeah I agree. I check out this website... http://royals.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/02/renovation_photos_the_outfield.html

Most of the time they only show the inside I really haven't gotten a good look of the outside since last season...

Remember when someone was firing a gun from the interstate into Kauffman during a game?  Luckily there were a lot of empty seats.

In all seriousness, gray cannot be refracted from light, therefore it is not a color.

Back to Kauffman . . .

Are you talking about the ribbon boards?  The ones on the fences or new ones they put in?  I don't know why, but it didn't even seem like Kauffman last year without the crown.  To me that's when the renovations will be officially complete.

It's not called a non-color TV.  It's called a black and white TV.  Just because someone says a movie is not in color doesn't mean their terminology is correct from a scientific standpoint - kind of like a near-miss in aircraft terminology.

Looks nice . . . there was absolutely no sellable reason to dump the K outside of location . . . you don't dump a ballpark that was a trendsetter just to go tromping off to find a "location" that will please a handful of urban dwelling metrosexuals.

If the Royals ever want to be the franchise they once were, they have to start winning again (Captain Obvious point) and they have to become THE regional MLB baseball team again.   The K's location facilitates the second point . . . Joe Smith and family from Waterloo don't pine for the P&L district at midnight.

Considering most parks of its era have been torn down because they sucked big-time, the K is doing outstanding.  Does it have the charm of Fenway or Wrigley? No.  Is it as cool-retro as Camden Yards? No.  Does it fill its need and still look like its fairly new park with an amazing look with fountains and the giant crown scoreboard among other amenities? Yes.  The only major knock is the lack of things to do around it.

I have seen baseball games at The K, Busch stadium, Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, Coors field, Dodger Stadium and Detroit's stadium. (forgot the name of it) I have seen some of the biggest baseball parks in history and I can honestly say (not being biased) that Kauffman stadium is the nicest place to watch a baseball game from what I have visited.

New Busch Stadium is better.  There's not a bad sight line in the whole park.  Fenway and old Yankee Stadium are decades old and obviously magnificent in their history.  The (sorta) new ballpark in Detroit, Comeria is first rate.

The place was built in the early 70's.  Before the renovations, it looked awful from outside (on the home plate side).  It looked like a pile of concrete.  Now, with the renovations, someone else correctly said it looks like a spaceship landed.  Reminds me way too much of the newly renovated Soldier Field.

They should have imploded the place and put the park downtown like every other self-respecting MLB town.

I don't disagree with you about the downtown ballpark.  But that ship has sailed and arguing about it now is just as irrelevant as arguing about why we went to Iraq.

A shiny turd is still a turd.

Don't be an idiot.  The "K" is an amazing place to watch baseball.

You apparently haven't been to a lot of MLB ballparks.

So because they sucked in the past means I'm not supposed to like them.
Geez.....how "bandwagonish" of you.

I was a Royals fans way back in the mid 70's to mid 80's decade when they had great teams. It's been a long spell since then, but they have improved every year the last 4 years, and the excitement is building back.

You don't have to root for them, but don't ruin it for the rest of us avid fans that don't just follow a team when they are good.

The Royals are the sh*t.  Baseball is the sh*t.  They will finish above .500 this year and pwrcat1 is very excited!

The Chiefs have won just as many playoff games as the Royals this decade too.
