Title: Air Purifier
Post by: Joker on February 19, 2009, 10:54:08 AM
Wife has allergy problems, and with spring coming up, I'd like to get an air purifier.  Anyone ever bought/used one?  If so, what is a good brand?  Do they work well?

TIA.

your best bet is to move to a different part of the country.

SD, did you spend much?  Did it just move some air around or what?

Yeah, I have pretty bad allergies.  I spent about $200.  Couldn't tell any sort of difference.

A divorce is the only reasonable solution. You dont want to be with someone who sneezes a lot.  :nono:

depending on how bad the allergies are as well as your money and insurance situation...she could get allergy tested and maybe get benefits from shots. have her see a specialist if possible.  Two Cents

Had that done.  Hope she likes a million needles poked in her back!

I have a Kenmore HEPA air cleaner, not this model, but I don't think they make mine anymore:

I've used it for about 2 years...seems to work really well.  I hardly have any problems in my bedroom anymore.  Whenever I replace the carbon filter, it's always caught a crapload of dust in it, so I know it's working to some extent.

Also helps to get one of the super allergen-reducing filters for your furnace/AC.

Also, I assume she is already taking some type of allergy med, but if not, Allegra and Zyrtec have really helped me.

Conflicting info is so cool.  I'll at least check out the filters.  It gets pretty dusty here, due to neighbors having just dirt for a backyard.

Srsly? I'd like to know more about this.

Never heard of this...

Completely replace you HVAC system. You need a system with multiple filters, including hepa, that brings in some outside air. Junk will build up in your home over time that can irritate your allergies, they only way to really remedy that is to mix return air with outside air.

Just take an empty toilet paper carboard roll and stuff it full of them.  Exhale through that.

My daughter has allergy problems. We tried the hepa airfilters that you can move room to room. We found that it took two of them running full time. We tried putting them on timers but it did not seem to works as well. Could believe how much it added to the elctric bill running them full time.

We have since had the duct work cleaned, and use the allergy type funace filters (not the cheap ones) and put a filter on the return air system. You have to change the filters every 30 days, but it makes a huge differnce in the quality of the air in the house. You really have to watch how much you restrict the air movement when you start playing with furnace filters, some are way to restrictive.

I would love to tear out the carpet and put down hardwood floors, but the wife says no.

Yikes, that sucks. Good luck with that.  Do you know what she is allergic to?

Just a heads up to all my peeps from the wonderful world on engineering. If you have flex duct, foil covered slinky, just replace it, it does no good to clean it. If you actually have sheet metal duct work, it has to be cleaned with a brush, air alone will not do the trick.

Now, can we move this thread to gp.c where it belongs :flush:.

This is working fracking fantastically!
I didn't have an empty one though, so I'm using a new one. Any ill effects possible with the TP dust I might be inhaling?
