Started this so as to not hijack _fan's RSCI thread.
My pick is Masta Seff.
-
Nice pole. :BSFlag:
-
that's fine if you want to felatiate Anderson, but you've got to ask yourself who has the better team. I really don't think MU is very good, and ku, on a good night, has the ability to take down OU.
-
easy for me. going off facts and not opinions: anderson has 1(one) top 100 rsci player and is in the top 10 nationally.

Anderson has turned that program around... I give him the slight nod over Self and Capel in 3rd Martin 4th unless K-State makes the tournament then I would jump him up to the top 2, maybe even 1.
-
Took down mine; I went ahead and rated 1 through 12 roughly based on where they are compared to preseason expectations.
Anderson
Self
Capel
Sadler
Martin
Ford
Turgeon
McDermott
Knight
Bz
Barnes
Drew
-
What about Turgeon?
-
Anderson has turned that program around...
Whoa, back the f*ck up, kemosabe. He's having a nice season, but loses his two (three?) best players and hasn't recruited dick to replace them.
-
I voted for Frank Martin because he is the coach for my favorite team; KSU.
-
Barnes but no Sadler?
-
I vote for massa seff. He doesn't have the best player in the country (like Capel) and let's face it KSU's start was awful. MU has a decent record, but doesn't strike me as a team thats "going places."
-
6-11 basically interchangeable.
Anderson
Capel
Self
Martin
Sadler
Ford
McDermott
Turgeon
Knight
Bz
Drew
Barnes

Top 3 scores, top 2 rebounders, best 3 point shooter. MU will take a hit next year and Anderson isn't bringing in Top 100 talent by any means.

Sorry I didn't mean to say that Mizzou is a team to beat for several years to come I am just saying he has done a lot better than I think everyone thought he would do and he will be around in Mizzou for awhile now with this year he has had...

Pretty much. I give Barnes the nod over Drew b/c Barnes arguably lost more talent from last year's team. McDermott, Knight, and Bz pretty much didn't have anywhere to go besides up, so hard to compare them really to Ford/Turgeon until the season is done. Ford Turgeon at least look to have postseason teams. I suppose McDermott could be below Knight/Bz b/c he does at least have an NBA talent on his roster.

easy for me. going off facts and not opinions: anderson has 1(one) top 100 rsci player and is in the top 10 nationally.
do you not know the difference between facts and opinions?
-
Question for you Andersonites- which team will go further in the B12 tourney? Which will go further in the NCAA's? Should the answers of either question influence your vote?

what are you getting at? that the rsci and AP rankings are opinions?
if so, then sure. i'm going off opinion.

OU, then ku, then MU.
It doesn't influence my vote because that's what I think will happen in the future, while my vote for COY right now is based on what has already happened.
at the end of conference play we could be having a completely different discussion. if mizzou finishes 3rd or below in big xii standings, then i'd give the nod to the coach of the team that wins the conference (either self or capel.)
but right now i'll say anderson has been the most impressive. doing very well(big xii standings, top 10 ap) with mostly crap talent(per rsci.)

Big 12 COTY as of 2.17 (this is a pole)
Dude. Its your thread and you said "as of 2.17". So as of "2.17", I'd say Anderson has done a better job IMO, partically b/c Tigers beat Hawks. By 4.17 or whatever the order could change.

I think I'll have to go w/ Capel. He has the national player of the year in Blake Griffin. But that team does nothing but win. I have watched a number of their games. Haven't been too impressed by them at times, but dammit, they keep winning. That's what good coaches do. Win games. I guess he's just good enough of a coach for them not to lose games.

Ya I can see how that can be confusing. I'm was trying to weed out the "if Martin wins the next 5" guys from voting for Frank.
Tough for me to accept that Anderson gets the nod based upon beating ku on his own court. I'm trying to look at the entire season. When you look at the entire picture through 2/17 Anderson has the 86th SoS comparted to Seff's 33rd. As Dax would say, smoke and mirrors. It seems like a lot of you are giving props to Anderson based upon him having less talent. The reality is that he's doing less, with less. Winning any amount of games w/ the 86th ranked SoS shouldn't be rewarded with COTY imo.

why ignore that he's done very well against crap talent?

Wait...are we voting for "coach of the year" or "coach who will go further in the b12 tourney"
-
Gonna have to go with Capel. Having one loss at this point, especially with some of the teams they played in their OOC and a better-than-normal Big 12 North, is extremely impressive.

That might be a good argument if you're talking about his noncon, but in conference he's beaten ku (8 top 100 RSCI players) , NU (1), ISU twice(1), UT(9), Baylor(6), OSU(4). All of those teams have equal or better talent(if you believe rsci.)
-
If I could change my vote I would go back and vote for Barnes. Is upcoming recruiting classes make up for this throw away season.

i'm talking about Anderson's entire coaching resume this season. and I'm talking about him getting to where he is by beating up crap teams. I don't care about RSCI. Anderson's SoS = 86th in the country. seff's is 33rd.

i've always thought of coach of the year as "best exceeding of expecations". 'clams is treating it like "who did the best at putting together a good team and coaching it".
more logical, but then, just give to whoever wins the conference. no need to vote.

the conference seems to treat it that way too (who did the best at putting together a good team and coaching it). there's no doubt that MU has exceeded expectations this season, but then again, so has ku. few would have envisioned a 1 loss ku team at this point in the year back in October with what they lost last year.

Both teams have been better than expected (and so have the cats to an extent)...although it doesn't hurt that texass and baylor are gawd awful.

Never have understood this argument.
You can't be a good coach and have good players? Maybe Capel has the best player in the country because he went out and recruited. #2 team in the country has to have more than one quality player on it.
And one player does not a team make...
-
Anderson has done more with less. We lowered expectations exponentially and then exceeded them. I think Anderson has to be in the best position currently.

Obviously I'm sticking with Masta Seff. You clowns still consider CMA COTY? GMAFB (http://www.ksufans.com/forums/Themes/ksufans-2007/images/post/angry.gif)

ku lost eight players, all five starters, and roughly 80% of its scoring/rebounding from last season. Yet, ku is sitting at 13-1 and 1st in the Big 12. Self deserves Big 12 and NCOY, and it's not even close.

Don't be a &@#%ing vag.
A coach who return TWO McDonald's all-americans at the two most important positions, and add the number #1 recruiting class in the country (which included the #1 Juco player in the country) doesn't deserve a reward. Maybe, MAYBE and "Atta Boy" for not &@#%ing up.
-
Bullsh*t. Look at what Kentucky has done with Patrick Patterson, Darius Miller, Jodie Meeks, etc, etc, then look at what ku is doing. Talent doesn't win on its own. You guys were telling anyone who would listen that Collins and Aldrich SUCKED up until that argument proved to be a joke. Again, eight total players, all five starters, and 80% of scoring/rebounding. The job Coach Self has done this year is unparalleled by anyone else in the country. You can talk about McDonald All-Americans all you want. This team is among the most inexperienced in the country, and they're about to finish 15-1 in the Big 12.

was talking to a ku fan friend of mine yesterday after the ku MU game about ku's success this year. while what Seff and ku has done this year is great, we both agreed that a lot of what ku has accomplished this year is a result of how bad the B12 is, especially the North. with that said, somebody has to win B12 COTY, and imo it's Seff by a longshot, with Martin getting 2nd place behind Masta Seff (by exceeding expectations the most). CMA gets 4th behind Capel. MU just isn't good.
at this point NCOY should go to either Gaudio @ WF or Purnell @ Clemson imo. JUST AN IMO.

Blah, blah, blah....you guys stunk it up in the non-con. Then, you come into Big 12 play and merely finish one stop higher than you were predicted to finish. How the hell can you argue that you accomplished anything more remarkable than OU, Mizzou, KSU, and NU? You cannot.

The North has been beating the sh*t out of the South this season. Aside from Colorado and Iowa State, the North is pretty good this season. The Big 12 had three top 15 teams as of last week... it's not any worse than the Big 10, Pac 10, or SEC. All of college basketball is down this year thanks to early entrees.

Never said that ku wasn't talented... but even a blind man could see the improvement that Aldrich has made under this coaching staff. That's part of what makes Self and the ku coaching staff so good.

The North has been beating the sh*t out of the South this season because the South fracking sucks. Are there two more disappointing teams in college basketball than Baylor and UT? The B12 sucks, as does the P10, SEC, and B10.
Yes, the B12 had 3 top 15 teams last week. We know that MU is a farce and was way overvalued.
Comparing what Seff has done in a weak B12 to what Purnell or Gaudio have done in the ACC is stupid. Quit drinking the koolaid.

Sorry, but finishing 3rd or 4th in the ACC doesn't deserve NCOY. Florida State has talent, and Clemson returned all five starters from last season, IIRC.

Sorry, but it's subjective. My opinion is that 3rd in the ACC is better than 1st in the B12, this season. Not sure what your comment about Florida State has to do with anything.
You seem to forget that ku wasn't the only team that lost good players last season.

The Big 12 has three top 15 teams... Texas, Oklahoma State, A&M, and K-State are all in the bubble conversation. I just don't see how that equates to sucking.
-
K-State picked to finish 8th or 9th by most. K-State lost 68.4% of its scoring year over year, 0 McD AA's, 1 Senior in White Tiger, starting point guard sat out all of last year, 4 of 6 top scorers are either Freshman or Sophomores. K-State with a chance to win 10 conference games . . . if that happens Frank Martin your Big 12 COY.

No doubt that if K-State gets to 10-6, Frank Martin deserves a lot of credit. However, if ku goes 15-1, after losing 80% of scoring/rebounding, Big 12 COY will be Bill Self.

he's really reaching critical mass. here i am raising and defending the bill seff for B12 COTY honors and he's arguing with me that it's 100% all because of what Bill Seff has done and that the conference is just as strong as it's ever been, etc. it's pretty mind numbing.

massa seff will win it . . . I don't think he really deserves it myself, the 80% phogtard talking point not-with-standing . . . good players are good players and they got plenty of experience last year in two key roles to more than make up for any youth.

I'm not saying the Big 12 is the Big East or the ACC. However, it's arguably the 3rd-best conference, unless you want to make an argument for the Pac 10, SEC, or Big 10.

Clams, that's not even close to what I'm saying. I've never denied that ku has talent. Of course ku has talent... but most of that talent was completely inexperienced to start the season. Only two players (Collins and Aldrich) played any sort of significant minutes last season. Oklahoma State has two McDonald AA's, and they're not sitting at 13-1 in the Big 12. Don't get all pissed because I think Bill Self has done a hell of a job this season.

he deserves it if you follow how the big 12 COTY has been handed out before, that's why i picked him as the winner in the first place. just going off past years.

he's really reaching critical mass. here i am raising and defending the bill seff for B12 COTY honors and he's arguing with me that it's 100% all because of what Bill Seff has done and that the conference is just as strong as it's ever been, etc. it's pretty mind numbing.
Don't get all pissed because I think Bill Self has done a hell of a job this season.
i'm not pissed. far from it.
your team has gotten better as it has gained experience. this is a common theme amongst a lot of teams (see K-State). Bill Seff team has done what Bill Seff's team was supposed to do, get better over time. OSU doesn't have the talent that ku does, terrible strawman attempt.

I've said since last year that ku would be an Elite Eight team by March. I knew this team would be good. I didn't think they'd go 15-1 in the Big 12 and be playing for a 1-seed.

Yeah Bentard . . . like I want to spend the rest of the day with some 22 year old kutard who thinks all he posts is "legitimate points" talking about who should be the Big 12 COTY, when the kutard already made it clear who the kutard thinks should be Big 12 COTY.

What lengths won't you go to in order to degrade ku? Frank Martin as Big 12 COY? I mean... are you kidding me?

So I am not entitled to my own opinion . . . I have to completely fellate ku like you do??
That's fascinating.

Your opinion is influenced by your unparalleled hatred for ku. My opinion is based on the fact that ku is 13-1 in the Big 12 and top 10 in the country, a year after losing all five starters and 80% of its scoring/rebounding.

The truth is, Martin would probably be the front-runner for Big 12 coach of the year if it weren't for the turnaround Mike Anderson has guided at Missouri. Infusing his own never-back-down approach into his players, Martin has turned a team lacking star power into a cohesive, defensive-minded unit that can beat nearly any team on any given night.

My view is based on a team that lost 70% of its scoring, and wasn't picked any higher than 8th or 9th, that has zero McD AA's, starts Lu Colon and Darren Kent inside with the caveat of K-State winning 10 games in conference. The reality for you, is that you're too much of Mongoloid to understand that.

ku has eight wins vs. the RPI top 50, 3rd-most in the country. Who has K-State beaten? A&M? Texas? Missouri? Your non-con was a joke and your team is currently 8-6 and tied for 4th in the Big 12. Meh.

Bentard . . . still playing the role of the chick who has to get the last word in . . .
