IBM Selectric, d00d!

I guess they were around when I learned. Half the class started on manual typewriters, the other half on electrics. About halfway through we swapped.

The manual typewriters had blank keys. You had to look at the front until you learned where the letters, etc. were.

I had a portable typewriter that I took to KSU. Didn't need it a whole lot, just every so often.

I think I can type around 30 to 40 WPM if I have to.

Yes. Used one on every paper or letter I wrote into my soph year of hs, then upgraded to the Tandy at my mom's work a couple times before finally getting my first PC.

That typewriter came in its own case. Just set it down, flipped the latches, and lifted the lid. I learned to loathe white out after a few minutes. Back then all I could do was hunt and peck, but I was probably 25 wpm doing that. Until I got into college I was probably as fast h&p as I was typing normal. Only the repetition of typing 3 or 4 long papers per class per semester did I actually pick up speed.

Yep...half the class started on typewriters and the other half started on some ancient ass computers and then switched halfway through the semester. Amazingly everyone who started on the computers saw their WPM drop down drastically as soon as they hit the typewriters (no backspace).

QFT. The blank keys sucked...but served me well.
Computers are too easy...you make a mistake, you just hit "delete". On a typewriter, with paper, backspace, white-out, turning the carriage up and back, etc...fracking sucked.

Yeah, but did you get your 40 word typing pin. I did not, just couldn't do it. The teacher could not decide if it was my typing or my spelling that was wrong. Man that class sucked.

I sure am glad I bought my daughter this TV set with the typewrighter thing attatched, that is hooked to the phone line. For me technology peaked with the microwave oven.

I didnt have any typing class until the 4th quarter of 8th grade, then a class freshman year of hs I had a 1 semester class for "computer literacy". Basically, we had our test for whether or not we needed comp lit at the end of the 3rd quarter in 8th grade, so I was screwed b/c I hadn't taken my typing class yet. :bs: Then I got an easy A in comp lit, b/c, guess what? I was already fracking good at it. Wonder how the frack that happened?

So anyway, I don't type a whole lot at length, I just have played MMO's and whatnot long enough to reply quickly in IM-style. So if I get a job that entails typing, I'm sure my wpm will go up pretty easily.
