Title: Mark Fox
Post by: McGrowlTowelZac on February 02, 2009, 07:59:32 AM
In the latest issue of Sporting News, they asked 5 coaches a series of questions.  Fox was one of the coaches they asked the questions too.

One of the questions was something like, "What player do you regret not recruiting harder?"
Fox's response was this,

Quote
"Gilbert Arenas.  We thought he would have been able to save Kansas State Basketball, turns out we were right."

What might have been? :'(

Not that we're that bad off right now, but still, who knows what would have happened if Gilbert had come to Manhattan.

Did he not recruit Gilbert as hard as he could because he had Quinton Buchanon in his back pocket?

Damn, why did we not hire this Fox guy?  :banghead:

We should probably add JR Rider to that early/mid 90's high water mark as well.

Pretty sure he committed to KSU and then backed out.  I thought that was the reason there was a Gilbert Arenas thread on this site.

Arenas visited K-State and after that he was done.  He (and I believe his dad) had known Asbury for a long time and he had gone to his basketball camps at Pepperdine since he was young, so they had a pretty good relationship.  But then he came here and pretty much hated it.  I remember an article where he talked about getting bored at the football game and some of the guys on the team took him back to their place to play video games.  After he came to Manhattan we pretty much had no chance.  I think this contributed greatly to Asbury's attitude toward recruiting to K-State that only got worse during his tenure here.

I don't even think they went to the football game (it was Bishop vs. Ricky Williams).  I think they just went to the mall's arcade, and he was all, "this place is boring".

Man, they played video games and that didn't sell it for him?  Unbelievable.
